Verizon reigns supreme in latest wireless test - CNET

  • The back-and-forth over which carrier has the best network continues, with Verizon Wireless taking the latest win. The nation's largest carrier also proved to be the best, according to the results taken from the first half of the year from testing firm RootMetrics. Along with the best overall performance, Verizon took the top spot in reliability, speed, data, calling and text message. AT&T finished second in every category except for calls, where Sprint edged out its rival. The results, which didn't differ much from RootMetrics' second-half 2015 test, give Verizon further ammunition as it touts the superiority of its network. These tests are critical to carriers as they sell you on the strength of their service. That's particularly the case for Verizon, which needs to justify the premium it charges its customers. But RootMetrics isn't the only game in town, and the results differ rad, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Frank Ocean releases 'Endless' visual album on Apple Music - CNET

  • "Endless" is exclusively streaming on Apple Music. Screenshot/Xiomara Blanco The wait for a new Frank Ocean album is over -- kind of.Early Friday moing the artist released a visual album, "Endless," exclusively on Apple Music. Currently, it's only available to stream as a 45-minute long video, not as a typical audio-only album with individual tracks. The project was heavily teased, thanks to a mysterious live stream that unceremoniously debuted two weeks ago. It answers a few questions curious fans have patiently waited for (he really was building some type of staircase), but, it doesn't quite answer the most important question -- where's the new album? There's no official word on when or if the album-only version of "Endless" will be released. • Mitsubishi's latest concept is yet another SUV - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsConcept CarsMitsubishi's latest concept is yet another SUVEnlarge ImageIt's not not handsome, but there's always plenty of time for that to change between now and when production begins. Mitsubishi Mitsubishi sure does love itself a sport utility vehicle. The company's cut down its US offerings to where its bread-and-butter products are crossovers, and most of its auto-show concepts have also been utility vehicles over the last few years. When it came time to roll out yet another concept, this time for the Indonesia Inteational Auto Show, what do you think Mitsubishi came up with?In a move that will likely shock most citizens of Earth into a state of total death, Mitsubishi's trotting out a new SUV concept. It follows in the visual footsteps of the current Outlander and other concepts, with Mitsubishi's "Dynamic Shield" design language lending it a rather powerful looking front end.But of course, it can't just be a utility vehicle. Heavens, no! That would be too simple for a concept car. Instead, it's adopted a whole load of sporty characteristics, like deep fender flares and, for some reason, "generous ground clearance." I'm not calling ground clearance, Mitsubishi is. Yeah, I don't get it, either. Inside, despite its compact frame, it's packing three rows of seats. That's all I can really say, because Mitsubishi didn't bother to supply more than the one picture. Unlike other concepts, this one's likely heading to production, albeit with the design language tued down a notch or two. It's set to be built in Indonesia, which makes sense given its debut location. Carscoops says production begins in late 2017, so if it's got a chance of heading to the US, there's a good chance we'll see it announced during this year's forthcoming auto-show circuit. , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Apple releases iOS 9.3.4 update to squash security bug - CNET

  • Apple's latest iOS update resolves another security flaw. Screenshot by Lance Whitney/CNET Apple's latest update to its iOS software fixes a security hole that could have been exploited to take control of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Released on Thursday, iOS 9.3.4 addresses the problem as one in which an "application may be able to execute arbitrary code with keel privileges," according to an Apple support page. That means an attacker could execute virtually any command, including one that would gain control of your iOS device.iOS 9.3.4 fixes that vulnerability, the latest in a long line of flaws discovered since iOS 9 was released almost a year ago. Yes, iOS 9 is approaching its first anniversary, and bugs are still being uncovered. That points to the difficulty in finding flaws that can affect any piece of software. Apple can do all the inteal testing it wants. But many vulnerabilities remain undiscovered until users either stumble upon them or make a concerted effort to find them. In this case, the flaw in iOS 9.3.3 was found and exploited by a Chinese jailbreaking team called Pangu. In late July, the Pangu team released a tool that allowed users to jailbreak their iOS devices. On its support page, Apple actually credited the folks at Pangu for discovering the flaw, serving as a not-so-subtle nod that iOS 9.3.4 also renders their new jailbreak ineffective. Apple frowns upon jailbreaking, a process that allows you to bypass Apple's restrictions, thus letting you tap into certain features and install software not approved by the company. Apple was users that jailbreaking can leave their devices more susceptible to security vulnerabilities, a shorter battery life and the inability to install future updates, among other problems. Jailbreaking plays like a game of cat and mouse. Hackers attempt to jailbreak the latest version of iOS, which leads Apple to create an updated versio, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Pioneer's latest white-out turntable proves there's life after Technics - CNET

  • The Pioneer PLX-500 tutable looks almost identical to the original Technics SL-1200 deck, minus the absurdly high price tag. Pioneer If you weren't one of the lucky few to snag the remodeled (and absurdly expensive) version of the coveted Technics SL-1200GAE DJ tutable before it sold out in 30 minutes, you'll soon have the chance to pick up a very cool consolation prize. This week Pioneer announced the PLX-500 tutable that looks almost exactly like the iconic direct-drive deck, and it doesn't cost $3,300.It's a continuation of the PLX DJ line that we first reviewed in 2014, but this model is an "all-in-one" design with its own built-in pre-amplifier. That means you can hook it up to any pair of speakers without any extra layers in between you and that cozy blanket of analog audio. The back of the tutable has a USB-out port to tu analog audio into digital. Pioneer If you do decide to throw an all-vinyl house party, the PLX-500's direct-drive engine has a quick spin-up and more than enough torque to handle heavy scratching. Just like the original 1200s, it has all the essentials you need for mixing, like pitch controls, strobe light illumination, a weighted tone arm and, of course, variable platter speeds for juggling 33 and 45RPM records. But there's one new feature that really sets the PLX-500 apart from legacy tutables: It has a USB-out port so you can digitize your entire record collection using the company's rekordbox application. While it's true newer tutables like the Audio-Technica LP-120 already offer digital recording, this is the first one I've seen that includes the software. The Pioneer PLX-500 will sell for just $350 (£270 or AU$460) when it hits stores in September. The black model is standard if you want to get as close to the original as possible, but the company also has an all-white v, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Microsoft is updating Windows 10 again, in its latest bid to win you back - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageMicrosoft's Surface Book PC includes a pen the company says will be even more useful after the Windows Anniversary Update. Sarah Tew/CNET A new update to Microsoft's Windows 10 is coming, but you're forgiven if you didn't know. It tus out not many people are going to tell you.Admittedly, there's not much to talk about. The list of refinements for Microsoft's free paper-anniversary update to Win 10 can fit on a small sheet with less than a dozen bullet points. The changes boil down to features like making the digital pen more useful, new technology to detect hacking attacks and the ability to log into a computer with a wearable device instead of a password. The company's Cortana voice-activated assistant will gain new features too, each of which was designed to bring the technology closer to, as Microsoft spokeswoman Laura Jones put it, "the same features of a real-life personal assistant."With this in mind, Microsoft and the PC industry are largely treating the August 2 launch as just another Tuesday. That's just fine to Roger Kay, an analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates, who said Microsoft is better off focusing its efforts on convincing businesses to upgrade than teaching consumers -- who largely don't know what version of Windows they're running anyway -- about an incremental upgrade. "People are probably not very excited by it," he said. This is not the Microsoft you might remember from days of old, when the company and its partners would plow considerable resources into informing the world that a new version of Windows has arrived. In the years since Windows 8's debut in 2012, when the company spent hundreds of millions of dollars spent telling the world about it, Microsoft has signaled change.Satya Nadella took the reins as Microsoft's new CEO two years ago, the Windows leadership team has changed, and the company is now releasing its widely used Word, Excel a, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Apple's latest numbers show a huge slowdown in China - CNET

  • Enlarge Image Sarah Tew/CNET Apple's latest numbers are in -- and while the company was quick to celebrate selling a billion iPhones, a closer look reveals a troubling trend for one of the company's most important markets: China. Sales in the Greater China region (the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong) plummeted 33 percent year over year to $8.8 billion for the quarter that ended in June. Apple's revenue for its fiscal third quarter was $13.23 billion for the Greater China region. That was Apple's worst regional drop among its markets. China, which for some time has been Apple's second largest market after the US, is now its third largest market, with Europe taking second place. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A potential reason for the drop is heat from competitors. Chinese phone makers like Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi have traditionally focused on low-end to midtier devices for budget-conscious China, but have now started moving to the high-end segment. Xiaomi's Mi 5 and Huawei's P9, for instance, are meant to compete with flagships from Apple and Samsung. In fact, many Chinese smartphone makers are one-upping Apple by releasing phones with features that the iPhone maker has yet to capitalize on, such as USB-C support, Dual LED flash and OLED displays. But it's not like Apple isn't trying. There were several not-too-subtle hints that it wants a bigger slice of China during the company's bid developer conference in June. Apple has also invested $1 billion in Didi Chuxing, China's Uber, possibly part of an attempt to butter up the Chinese govement, which can be harsh on foreign businesses.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

If you're right, a mythical creature, called a Pokemon, appears and you have to catch it.People have said they love the adventure of finding as many creatures as they can, like a Pikachu or a Charmander, while they visit local landmarks called Pokestops and Gyms. It's all possible because of this new technology called augmented reality, where computers and the real world mix in ways that seemed like sci-fi just a few years ago.Seems like harmless fun, right? After all, this game finally gets gamers walking outside instead of sitting inside and mashing a controller with their fingers in front of a TV in a dark room. But some people have ended up putting themselves in real danger, all in an effort to gather supplies (like Pokeballs) and capture the next fictional animal that shows up on their screen.Which brings me to the point: It's only fun until someone gets hurt. And while that hasn't happened, beyond bumps and scrapes -- at least not yet -- it's amazing how many ways people have put themselves in danger so fa, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Katy Perry releases new song 'Rise' exclusively on Apple Music - CNET

  • Katy Perry Katy Perry is the latest artist to forgo Spotify in favor of Apple Music. The singer debuted her new song "Rise" on Apple's streaming service late Thursday night. While the song can also be found on the singer's Vevo YouTube page, it isn't available on either Spotify or Tidal. The song is exclusive to Apple Music subscribers for the time being and can only be purchased through the iTunes store. "This is a song that's been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface," Perry said about the song during an appearance on the Today Show. "I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite. I know that together we can rise above the fear... in our country, and around the world." Apple has been making a push for exclusive content in effort to attract new subscribers to the service. In December, the company partnered with Taylor Swift to release a behind-the-scenes concert video shot during the pop's star's world tour. Apple Music and iTunes were also the first services to offer Drake's new album "Views". Apple Music is available on both Android and iOS for $9.99 a month. • Verizon hopes to set 5G agenda with latest milestone - CNET

  • The reality of 5G, wireless connectivity that's faster than our speediest home inteet service, is years away. But that isn't stopping Verizon from making its presence felt now.The nation's largest wireless carrier on Monday said it had worked out the radio specifications for its 5G deployment with its vendor partners, providing a common blueprint for everyone regarding the network infrastructure, processors and devices. Setting the specifications not only speeds the process for its own vendors, but may influence the inteational community when players around the world finally begin hammering out a global standard, expected in 2020. By moving quickly now, Verizon hopes to set the agenda for how those standards look, a similar strategy it took with its 4G LTE deployment. Riding inside a test van with a 5G signals, Verizon shows off a connection speed that's far higher than what you could get at home. Sarah Tew/CNET "The level of collaboration that we're seeing exceeds what we saw during 4G," said Adam Koeppe, vice president of network technology planning. Verizon said it was working on making sure its 5G specification lined up with KT Corp., a Korean carrier interested in making a quick leap into the new technology in time for the 2018 Olympics, held in Pyeongchang, South Korea. There's been a lot of hype about 5G, and Verizon has had a hand in that. It offers massive potential as the next generation of cellular technology. The test speeds that Verizon has been able to produce are fast enough to download the entire "Simpson" series, 600 high-definition episodes, in about half an hour. While that may represent a theoretical best-case scenario, even modest predictions of what 5G will actually look like may transform our lives and a myriad of industries by improving and widening access to more people and more devices.Verizon isn't the only one working on 5G. • AI, Frankenstein? Not so fast, experts say - CNET

  • Ask Apple's Siri digital assistant if she's evil, and she'll respond curtly, "Not really." Repeat a famous line from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey," in which a computer on a spaceship kills nearly all the human crew, and Siri groans. "Oh, not again." And who can blame her? We humans have a morbid fascination with machines rising up to wipe us out or to enslave us as cocooned, flesh-and-blood battery packs. You can see that vision of the future streaming over Netflix whenever you want. Face it. For every lovable R2-D2 and C-3PO from the Star Wars universe, it's the dark side that seems to resonate most: the Cylons, who nearly eradicate human civilization in "Battlestar Galactica," or Skynet and its murderous robot warriors from the Terminator movies. That gets under the skin of those working in the field of artificial intelligence, the science of computers that will someday resemble humans in their sweeping, world-altering capabilities, if not their physical form. AI is something we know, or think we know, better as a character from science fiction, grim or otherwise, than as an app in reality. The experts are having none of that. "Most of the Hollywood scenarios that we see are completely implausible," says Yann LeCun, Facebook's director of AI research.Philosopher and author Nick Bostrom is sounding the alarm over the dangers of artificial intelligence. Nick Bostrom Still, there's a loud contingent of AI detractors out there, convinced that the emergence of highly sophisticated machines means grave dangers ahead. Science and technology luminaries from Stephen Hawking to Bill Gates to Elon Musk have waed us to proceed with caution, or else, even as researchers work to keep a grip on the AI reins. Nick Bostrom, a philosopher and author of "Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies," is at the forefront of sounding the alarm over the dangers. If machine i, ...ادامه مطلب
