Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's efforts to tu around the company haven't gone as planned.
James Martin/CNET
Yahoo may still be painfully losing the war for web ads, mindshare and hot new products, but that won't be a problem for CEO Marissa Mayer. Yahoo's chief executive could get a $59 million payout even if the company is gobbled up by rivals and she ends up unceremoniously sacked, the Guardian reported Tuesday, based on Yahoo's most recent proxy statement.
The same report claims Mayer has already brought home $78 million since she became CEO in 2012, according to stock analyst firm MSCI. The potential addition of $59 million would bring Mayer's total eaings during her tenure at the troubled Inteet firm to $137 million.

Hoping to make it easier for folks to do home renovations using the Web, the Boston e-commerce company on Tuesday teamed up with Seattle startup Porch.com, which helps people find local handymen, electricians and plumbers. Now, Wayfair shoppers in Porch's 15 markets will be able to connect with professionals for needed installation, fuiture assembly or plumbing when making a purchase.
"We want to build the absolute best destination for home," Steve Oblak, Wayfair's general manager, said in an interview. "To do that we believe we have to have a comprehensive plan."
The deal points to continued development in the burgeoning market of online handy services, with Amazon launching its Home Services last year to compete with Angie's List, Pro.com, Yelp and others.
But, even with all the new players in household services and renovations, Porch CEO Matt Ehrlichman said all the online offerings combined are still tiny compared with the size of the total market.
"You put all the competitors together, and we've barely scratched the surface," he said.
The partnership is the first under a new Porch program to integrate its services with retailers both online and in-store, and more of these kinds of tie-ups will be coming this year, Ehrlichman said. Porch is already a partner with home-improvement retailer Lowe's, helping its customers connect with local workers including painters and landscapers.
Porch right now is available in the markets of Seattle, Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Houston, Washington, DC, Chicago, Phoenix, Orlando, Denver, Austin, San Beardino and Raleigh.

T-Mobile is pushing out Marshmallow for a couple of key Samsung devices.
Google
T-Mobile subscribers with a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Galaxy Note 5 can finally bite into the latest flavor of Android.
On Monday, the carrier announced it will roll out Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to the two Samsung devices. T-Mobile's support pages describe how to check your S6 Edge+ and Note 5 to see if you need to run the update.
Marshmallow has had a slow rollout since its November debut. The lengthy wait is a side effect of Android's unwieldy upgrade process. Phone makers and wireless carriers must test each new version from Google for every device before they can plan and implement a rollout. That means Android users often have to wait months to receive the latest version.
But Marshmallow seems to be getting stickier as more companies push through the upgrade. Early this month, Google's Android Developers Dashboard revealed that the new version doubled its adoption rate over the course of a month. During the week ending April 4, Marshmallow had landed on 4.6 percent of all devices that visited the Google Play Store, up from 2.3 percent a month prior.
T-Mobile's update for the S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 will reach subscribers between April 18 and May 20. Consumers on a Wi-Fi connection will be prompted to download the software when it's available. You can also check for the update manually by tapping Setting, scrolling down to the System section and then tapping the About device setting. Tap Software Update and then OK to check for the update.
The Marshmallow update takes up a hefty 1.34 gigabytes, so you'll want to allow enough time and bandwidth to install it.

Uber's challenge to French laws may prove successful.
Uber
The European Commission is reportedly readying itself to challenge French taxi laws following a complaint from ride-hailing service Uber.
A formal notice is set to be issued by the Commission, which will point out that the national law in France breaches a European Union treaty, Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing "two people familiar with the matter."
The law in question means that chauffeured cars have to retu to a base in between customers and bans the use of geolocation software for finding cars or customers. Known as the Thevenoud law, the legislation was introduced in October 2014 and outlaws many of the technologies Uber relies upon.
Uber is arguing that the law favors traditional taxis over its own service and that France should have informed the Commission about its introduction. France will either have to come to an agreement with Europe or the Commission could refer the case to the European Court of Justice, the highest court in the EU.
Neither the European Commission nor Uber immediately responded to a request for comment.
The service continues to expand around the world, announcing on Tuesday that it will launch in Cardiff, Wales. In Australia, Sydney Airport also said it will soon start allowing Uber pickups.

Bill Gates supports Microsoft, which is suing the US govement.
Bloomberg/Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on Monday expressed his support for the company's wish to inform customers about govement requests for their data.
Despite not being an "absolutist," Gates said gag orders should not automatically be imposed when federal agencies seek access to emails and documents. Instead, privacy advocates and law enforcement should collaborate to strike "the perfect balance," Reuters reports him saying at an event hosted by the publication in Washington.
"There probably are some cases where [the govement] should be able to go in covertly and get information about a company's email," he said, adding that Microsoft believes these should be "extraordinary."
Apple's spat with the FBI is not representative of how many national security requests it complies with.
James Martin/CNET
US law enforcement asked Apple for information 4,000 times, covering 16,112 devices, in the second half of 2015. Apple complied with 80 percent of the requests, according to the company's transparency report, released Monday.
The number of requests Apple received between July and December 2015 increased from the first half of the year, but decreased from the same period in 2014.
The publication of the report follows a recent spat between Apple and the FBI in which the company refused to bypass the security on the iPhone of San Beardino gunman Syed Farook. The figures released this week show that despite refusing the FBI on this occasion, Apple frequently provides help to law enforcement.
Apple received between 1,250 and 1,499 specific national security orders at the end of 2015 and, without giving specific numbers, said that these orders ending up affecting between 1,000 and 1,249 user accounts.
Fewer demands for information regarding devices were honored in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa, which combined made 19,322 requests. Apple only gave out information in 52 percent of cases. Germany made by far the most requests, totalling 11,989.

The Denon HEOS range. All but the HEOS Cinema (top) are due for new Bluetooth and hi-res versions.
Denon
Denon has announced it's refreshing its line of HEOS wireless audio products, differentiated by the HS2 specification, and which now includes features such as Bluetooth and hi-res audio support.
HEOS is Denon's proprietary wireless system that will play streaming services or networked music in a multiroom environment, in a similar way to Sonos or Bluesound.
The new HS2 components will feature upgraded processors in addition to 512MB of flash memory for future updates and 256MB of RAM. This will enable processing for music up to 24-bit/192kHz in addition to support for Sony's DSD format.
The HS2 HEOS 5 ($600/£499/AU$999) and HEOS 7 ($400/£349/AU$689) are available now while the HEOS 1 ($200/£199/$529) and 3 ($300/£249/AU$529) will be available in the US in May/June, and the new Amp ($499/£399/$899) and Link ($349/£299/$599) will come in July. UK and Australian availability of the HS2 components is yet to be confirmed.
The HEOS 1 with Go Pack is water-resistant.
Sarah Tew/CNET
A Denon representative confirmed the new range will remain at the same price as the original, though it's unknown whether the $100 Go Pack for the HEOS 1 will change price. The Go Pack includes a now-redundant Bluetooth module in addition to an exteal battery.
If customers have the existing HS1 components in their systems they can add a HS2 speaker to enable hi-res support in their system. The HS2 component will down-convert higher-than-CD music onboard to 16/44.1 to enable it to be played on the existing speakers
Meanwhile HS1 users can alteatively add a $50 USB dongle (which is also part of the existing HEOS 1 Go Pack) if they just want to enable Bluetooth on existing systems.
High-resolution support is of particular interest to audiophiles and people with large collections of music downloads. The upgrade means HEOS is now in line with other Sonos competitors that differentiate themselves from the multiroom giant by offering 24-bit compatibility and Bluetooth -- neither of which Sonos can do.
While competitor Yamaha produces receivers that support its own wireless system called MusicCast, Denon has yet to announce any receivers that support HEOS.

Spoiler alert: If you are yet to watch the Season 5 finale of "Game of Thrones" and have also managed to avoid a year of headlines about the fate of one particular character, read on at your own peril.
For the rest of us, we've been subject to months of speculation that Jon Snow may not be completely dead, despite being run through with cold, hard steel by most of the Night's Watch when we saw him last. Now, a machine leaing algorithm designed by a team at the Technical University of Munich has analyzed data on all the characters in Westeros, both dead and alive, and concluded that it is very likely that Snow is actually a survivor.
The project, dubbed "A Song of Ice and Data", basically scrapes info from the online Wiki of Ice and Fire encyclopedia, which focuses largely on the series of books by George R.R. Martin, but also covers the HBO show they inspired. Using this data source, two dozen features of each character are statistically compared to try and figure out which features make a character most likely to die.
In other words, if a character who has yet to die in the storyline shares a lot of these features with a character who has already died, the algorithm assigns the still-living character a high probability of eventually biting it.
And by its calculations, the algorithm finds that Jon Snow's character only has an 11 percent chance of dying. That's quite low, especially when compared to the poor boy-King, Tommen Baratheon, who has a 97 percent chance of dying. I'll never understand why everyone wants that creepy Iron Throne so much.
Stannis Baratheon, Daenerys Targaryen, Davos Seaworth and Petyr Baelish round out the five characters statistically most likely to die. On the other side of things, Sansa Stark has only a 3 percent chance of dying, followed by Snow, Cersei Lannister, Mace Tyrell and Roose Bolton as the top survivors to bet on.
The good news is that in the massive world of Westeros, there's no shortage of characters. In fact, the statistical analysis looked at a total of 2,028 characters that play some part in moving the plot forward in the books. The HBO show also crams a lot of faces into each hour, with over 33 characters in each episode on average and almost 4 (3.88, to be exact) new characters introduced in each installment.
If you think you know better than some fancy computer who will die next on the show's season 6 premiere this Sunday, then you might also be the kind of person to check out our Game of Thrones quiz. We promise you have pretty close to a 100 percent chance of surviving it.

Legion, the sixth expansion to massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft, is due to drop on August 30, developer Blizzard has announced. It will see Alliance and Horde alike fighting the vast army of demons known as the Buing Legion as they retu for a third attack on the so-far unconquerable land of Azeroth.
It brings with it the new Demon Hunter player class, a new continent and storyline, a level boost to 100 for a single character, class halls, customisable artefact weapons and a PvP overhaul.
The game is available for pre-purchase now in both a standard edition, and a deluxe edition, which includes bonuses such as a mount and pet for World of Warcraft and a slew of bonuses for other Blizzard games: a mount for Heroes of the Storm, an armour set for Diablo III and portraits for StarCraft II. The model itself is a 20 percent scale model of the aircraft, and weighs 50 kilograms (325 pounds). It's constructed of strong but lightweight carbon fibre and 3D-printed plastics. Controlled by Aurora Flight Sciences personnel on the ground, the craft managed to take off, hover and land, lifted by 24 rotors powered by synchronous motors, like an upscaled, high-tech drone.
There's still some work to complete. The team at Aurora will be attempting to improve both flight speed and hover efficiency over the next year, with a view to a top sustained speed of 400 knots. They'll also be working on the flight system and configuring the full-scale LightningStrike.

A fan thinks Kanye West dissed him and is fighting back with a lawsuit.
Justin Baker-Rhett is suing the hip hop star on claims West lied when he said his album, "The Life of Pablo," would be available only on the streaming service Tidal, according to the proposed class-action suit filed Monday in US District Court in San Francisco.
The lawsuit says some 2 million subscribers signed up for Tidal and gave the struggling service access to $84 million in personal data and credit card information from users by promising exclusive access to the new album release in February.
The Grammy-winning rapper tweeted in February that "My album will never never be on Apple. And it will never be for sale... You can only get it on Tidal."
But not only did the album appear on Tidal, but it was also released on West's web site, iTunes, Pandora, Spotify and other streaming services.
A fan is suing Kanye West claiming the hip hop star lied about making his latest album, "The Life of Pablo," exclusively only on the Tidal streaming music service. The album later appeared on other platforms.
PGFM/MediaPunch/Corbis
The suit, which also names fellow star rapper Jay Z (real name: Shawn Carter), who is also a partner is Tidal, alleges Baker-Rhett "subscribed to Tidal specifically because he was misled into believing that it was the only music platform on which the album would ever be available."
"But it wasn't. It was released on many more platforms than that," said Rafey Balabanian, a managing partner at Edelson PC, which filed the suit on Baker-Rhett's behalf.
The album was released on February 14 and pulled down shortly after it appeared. The album was reportedly illegally downloaded more than 500,000 times from other sites after many fans said they paid $20 to download the album off Tidal but didn't get it.
A West representative didn't immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.

Whispers of an upgraded "PlayStation 4.5" began earlier this year, but now firm details are emerging, with the gaming website Giant Bomb citing unnamed sources and a leaked inteal document for an upgrade that includes processing, graphics and memory upgrades, as well as 4K resolution.
Called NEO, as Giant Bomb reports, the upgraded console will not have its own exclusive games. Instead, all games must have exactly the same features for PS4 and NEO owners, with the NEO consoles able to run an improved version, such as higher resolution graphics, or more players in local multiplayer.
All games must also have the same peripheral support, and players will all appear on the same PlayStation Network. This is to keep players on both consoles connected.
According to Giant Bomb's report, Sony is expecting developers of NEO games to meet or exceed the original PS4's frame rate, and would like developers to reach for the 4K resolution. In addition, games that have already been released will be able to patch for the upgrades.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Autonomous underwater vehicles are opening up the aquatic domains in more detail than ever before. However, current drone technology is still limited in a few ways, one of which is size, shape and flexibility. With a swimming snake robot, Norwegian engineering company Kongsberg Maritime believes, we could access, survey and monitor hard-to-reach areas.
Together with Norwegian University of Science and Technology spin-off company Eelume and petroleum company Statoil, Kongsberg is developing a sea snake-inspired robot that will reside permanently on the seabed, monitoring underwater equipment and performing maintenance tasks such as adjusting valves -- tasks that are relatively simple to perform, but difficult for humans to access. This should greatly reduce the cost of subsea operations, the team believes.

You know, some people have been hurt in love. It's OK. Maybe those people will consider $1,750 (around about AU$2,250 or £1,220) a small price to pay for peace of mind.
That's how much Spanish company Durmet is asking for the Smarttress, a smart mattress with a built-in "Lover Detection System" (yes, that's what it's called) that will send an alert to your smartphone "whenever someone is using your bed in a questionable way." It uses 24 sensors to detect whenever the mattress starts a-bouncing, then pings the user's Android or iPhone.
It's still in production, but to prove to re/code that the mattress is real, the company sent through this video of the testing process. Of course, if you are really that conceed, a nanny-cam will cost you a little less money... although it's worth pointing out that a smart cheater probably won't conduct their extracurricular activities at home.

The US Supreme Court refused to hear a challenge from a group of authors who claim Google Books violates their copyright.
The New York-based trade group The Authors' Guild and several individual authors have been fighting Google Books since 2005, when it first brought the matter to the Supreme Court. In 2013, a US Circuit Judge dismissed the case, arguing that the service fell under fair use.
In October of last year, the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the 2013 ruling. The judges noted that the books were not available in their entirety, and were therefore not a reasonable substitute for the original books.
"The price of this short-term public benefit may well be the future vitality of American culture," said the Authors' Guild's Mary Rasenberger in a statement.
Google said in a statement, "We are grateful that the court has agreed to uphold the decision of the Second Circuit which concluded that Google Books is transformative and consistent with copyright law."
Google didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
