  • From nerd heaven to Coachella Lite: Man, Google I/O has changed - CNET

  • The very first Google I/O conference didn't have the puffy white tents or long lines of this year's show, held at an outdoor concert venue in Mountain View, Califoia -- and it certainly didn't have attendees fretting about seagull droppings splatting down from overhead. We would know. We were there.Enlarge ImageMarissa Mayer, then a Google VP, addresses the crowd at Google I/O 2008, its first developer conference. Stephen Shankland/CNET What the Google I/O of 2008 had was a lot of geeky developers who were interested in this shaky little brand-new phone thing called Android, plus a few joualists like us who wanted to know what Google would say. Google had held two previous single-day developer events, but this was its first full-blown conference. And it was nerd heaven. We filed into the smallest building of San Francisco's Moscone Center in a civilized way (nobody ran or pushed or made you feel like corralled cattle). Up on stage, Marissa Mayer, now Yahoo's CEO, then Google's vice president of search products and user experience, spoke about the wonders of split A/B testing. But the highlight of the show, hands-down, was the very first prototype Android phone, that included -- get this -- technology called a touchscreen! Even that first prototype had a prominent Google search bar, which telegraphed the basic purpose of Android: drive the people who own the phones into using Google's services. Back then, though, BlackBerry was still a commanding power, and phone owners were comfortable using a stylus, scroll wheels and hardware keyboards to navigate their phones. Apple's iPhone -- introduced just a year earlier, and still lacking an app store -- helped popularize the touchscreen, and Google's Android team was quick to join the trend. • Only Amazon can open a college bookstore with no books - CNET

  • Amazon@Penn probably doesn't look like any store you've ever visited. The brightly lit space includes no shelves, no standing inventory and no checkout. It's likely debatable the location is even a "store" at all. Yet this 3,500-square-foot space, which hosted a grand opening Friday at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, serves as another example of Amazon's evolution, as the world's biggest e-commerce company starts building physical locations to draw itself even closer to its millions of customers. "We see lots of opportunities with this model," Ripley MacDonald, director of Amazon's student programs, said in the store's media center, which includes couches, conference tables and TVs set up with game controllers so students can play "Tetris" on Amazon Prime Video. "We're very excited with the engagement, and we're continuing to invest in it."Eddie Perez, site manager for Amazon@Penn, explains how his "store" works. Ben Fox Rubin/CNET Call it a feeder system for future Amazon customers. Colleges provide a densely populated group of educated, wealthier individuals, just the kinds of folks who are most likely to join Prime. Amazon already tries to pull them in by offering six-month free trials of Prime Student memberships, which are just $49 annually after that. Campus stores could fully convert them before they even graduate. "They just want to hook you when you're 20," Michael Pachter, a Wedbush analyst, said. Penn benefits because its mail processing operations have struggled to keep up with the growing piles of e-commerce boxes being delivered to the 25,000-student school. Amazon accounts for 40 percent of those boxes, said Marie Witt, vice president of Penn's business services. "It's definitely been a strain on the system," she said Friday. Amazon@Penn serves as a pickup and drop-off hub for students, faculty and workers. They can order anything from textbooks t, ...ادامه مطلب

  • LinkedIn wants to help college students find a job - CNET

  • LinkedIn's new app is focused on getting college kids employed. LinkedIn Graduation is coming. You're worried you wasted a lot of money on a fancy piece of paper because you'll never find a job. LinkedIn wants to calm your nerves. The professional social network on Monday will release an app dedicated to helping college kids find their first job out of school. The app, called Linkedin Students, has students enter their school, major and expected graduation date. It then connects you with alumni and resources to help your job search. The app takes you through a 5-step process, where you swipe from screen to screen. (Yes, kind of like the dating app Tinder.) It does things like show you the median salary in your field, tells you what kind of work people who had your major at your school are doing now, and gives you a few actual jobs to apply to. The first time you use the app, it will show you only one job posting. That's by design. "Students find the job search daunting," said Ada Hu, the app's product manager. "We never saw them wanting to be in an app that long." The goal is for students to use it in little chunks, like while you are going from class to class. Apparently, college kids need all the help they can get. For young college graduates in 2015, the unemployment rate is 7.2 percent, compared with 5.5 percent in 2007, according to the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank. With the launch of the new app, LinkedIn will shut down some other resources it had for students, including its university rankings and school finder. The company will kill those services on May 16. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Twitter lines up with the NFL to stream Thursday night football - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageNew York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. reaches out for a tough catch over Atlanta Falcons coerback Robert Alford. Duncan Williams/Zuma Press/Corbis This is the sports programming equivalent of a spectacular catch by Odell Beckham Jr. Twitter has signed a deal with the National Football League to show 10 Thursday night games online during the upcoming season, making a splashy play for the attention of millions of NFL fans. The games will be screened for free to a global audience on any device with Inteet access. It's not exclusive, though. The games will also be available on NBC, CBS and the NFL Network, meaning viewers will have the option of watching games via traditional, cable or digital broadcast. Still, the deal, announced Tuesday, marks a big first down for Twitter, the debut foray of the social media service into live sports streaming. Twitter has long hosted conversations around sporting events and has more recently introduced replays and curated "moments" following those contests. Consider it a kind of online sports bar. "Twitter is where live events unfold and is the right partner for the NFL as we take the latest step in serving fans around the world live NFL football," said league commissioner Roger Goodell, who was amped up enough about the deal that he tweeted for the first time since September 2014. In August, the NFL and the social network signed a two-year deal to show in-game highlights, custom game recaps, breaking news, analysis and archival videos to fans. The relationship between the NFL and Twitter actually goes back to 2013. And it just so happens that Twitter CFO Anthony Noto was previously the chief financial officer for the NFL. Terms of the deal were not announced. A Twitter spokesman said the company has nothing to say yet on how exactly the games will work within the service. Twitter will also be the home of in-game highlights an, ...ادامه مطلب

  • College basketball finals to be shown in VR. Brackets still busted - CNET

  • March Madness is virtually inescapable. As if there wasn't already enough excitement over the annual college basketball touament, the organizers at the NCAA will live-stream Saturday's semi-finals and Monday's title game in virtual reality. The NCAA and its broadcast partners are using Samsung Gear VR, a headset that seats Samsung phones, to present the 180-degree courtside stream. Hoops fans will need to download the NCAA March Madness Live app in the Oculus Store to get the software needed to watch the stream. In October, NextVR, a VR content developer, partnered with the NBA and Tuer Sports to live stream the Golden State Warriors taking on the New Orleans Pelicans, the first professional sports game shown live in VR. Boxing and Nascar racing have all since received the VR treatment, and pro teams like baseball's San Francisco Giants are poised to create VR videos for their fans. Earlier this month, Fox Sports and NextVR aired seven games of the Big East basketball touament in virtual reality. "We're very close to seeing a number of high-profile sporting events shown in VR," NextVR Executive Chairman Brad Allen said during the Big East touey earlier this month. • E-sports will be as big as football and basketball, Xbox exec says - CNET

  • Head of Xbox Phil Spencer is optimistic about the future for competitive professional gaming. He said recently at the Halo World Championship that he thinks the e-sports scene will eventually rise to match the profile of traditional sports such as football and basketball."I think for the industry, e-sports is going to be as big as regular sports," he said. "You look at the number of people who play games, you look at the different platforms people are playing on, you look at the money that's pouring in, the broadcasts."Why is Spencer so optimistic? In short, games are easy to get into. And like traditional sports, gaming requires practice, teamwork, and dedication to rise to the top. "It's so accessible -- anybody can play a game," he said. "I think there's no cap to what e-sports can become. Unlike any other sport, you just sit down, grab a controller, and start playing games and build your skills."Spencer has seen the profile of competitive organized gaming grow in size and scope over the years."I think about us back on the original Xbox, plugging wires together," he said. "My e-sport was, 'Could I beat the guys in my dorm room?' Now, people are making a living playing Halo. It's great to see how the community comes together to support e-sports. It's real. It's fantastic."Pro gaming team CLG defeated Allegiance by a commanding 4-0 margin at the 2016 Halo World Championship on Sunday evening, taking home a trophy and a $1 million prize. • College goes on lockdown after Star Wars toy mistaken for a gun - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Wait, does that mascot have a lightsaber too? Farmingdale State College/YouTube screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET It isn't funny until it is.On Wednesday moing, everyone at Farmingdale State College on Long Island, New York, was reportedly told to stay in a safe place after someone had called 911 to say they'd seen a man in a car with a rifle. As the Associated Press reports, the caller thought the man was assembling the rifle. It seems that when police arrived it wasn't quite the weapon that had been feared. A Farmingdale spokeswoman told the AP that it was a "Star Wars" toy and Suffolk County Police confirmed to Newsday that it was, indeed, a lightsaber.Neither the college nor the campus police immediately replied to requests for comment. However, the college took to its Twitter account and said: "The police situation on campus has been resolved without incident. All students, faculty, and staff should resume normal activities."It's unclear who reported the man or who he was. Police, though, told Newsday the man with the lightsaber was a student. No charges were filed. This isn't the first time that "Star Wars" has caused a scare. Last year, a man was arrested after being seen outside a school wearing a Stormtrooper costume, complete with laser gun. At the time, the man told a local news station: "Like I'm some kind of weirdo or something?"In 2014, Farmingdale was named the fifth-safest college campus in the US. In our current time, however, threats are seen everywhere. Who can argue with a bystander being extra careful?Still, I wonder what sort of ribbing the lightsaber owner will enjoy. • Injured football player may wear 3D-printed brace in Super Bowl - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageThomas Davis wears a 3D-printed brace during practice for the Super Bowl. Carolina Panthers National Football League player Thomas Davis had both a triumphant and a devastating game on January 24. His Carolina Panthers dominated the Arizona Cardinals and eaed a trip to the Super Bowl, but at the expense of a broken right forearm for Davis. Davis may be carrying some extra equipment with him onto the field if he plays in Super Bowl 50 as he's determined to. His arm has a metal plate and 12 screws keeping it together. He also has a 3D-printed arm brace that was made to protect the injury during the game.3D printing company Whiteclouds is the brain behind the brace. It used a 3D scan of Davis' arm to design a shock-absorbing brace made from a blend of plastic and rubber-like materials. Holes keep the weight down and improve breathability. The design and engineering phase took place in just 8 hours. The actual print took 30 hours on a Stratasys Connex industrial-strength 3D printer. Whiteclouds shipped the brace in time for Davis to test it during practices in the week leading up to the big game this Sunday.Scott Perone of 3D Elite, a manufacturer of 3D-printed braces and casts for athletes, collaborated with Whiteclouds on the project. "Thomas Davis is already the 'bionic man' in our book," Perone said in a release. "This personalized 3D brace lined with Poron XRD makes him a bit more indestructible." Poron XRD is a soft, flexible material designed to absorb shocks and protect from impacts. The 3D-printed brace wasn't the only option in the running to protect Davis' arm, but it was the one the player chose over three other regular braces. He picked it for its toughness. According to statements made during media night on Monday, he "took every opportunity to hit it on something." Products created through 3D printing are becoming more common on the medical scene. We've seen eve, ...ادامه مطلب
