TrendForce They've been a fixture of the computing industry for 60 years, but in 2018, hard drives will be pushed aside by storage systems using memory chips in PCs, an analyst firm predicts.Hard drives revolutionized computing when IBM commercialized the first, RAMAC, in 1956. They read and write ones and zeros as tiny patches of magnetic information on rotating platters. But they don't fit well in phones, thumb drives and camera memory cards, which use a type of memory chips called flash instead. PCs with hard drives remain common, but the fastest machines use banks of flash memory called a solid-state drive (SSD) instead.SSDs no longer are exotic. Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata has spoken up again to talk about why it was decided that the long-awaited and much-anticipated game be delayed from September to November.Speaking with Famitsu, as translated by and reported on by Kotaku, Tabata started off by stating that "the optimization isn't [yet] sufficient." There are "various bugs" throughout the game, while frame rate is not holding to its 30 FPS target as well as Square Enix would like.Some of Final Fantasy XV's bugs won't keep players from advancing (a lot of games have bugs like this), but there are others that Tabata hopes can be fixed before release. "There are still of number of bugs like characters floating unnaturally in the air or appearing all strange [and glitchy]," he explained. Following several reports that the release of upcoming role-playing game Final Fantasy XV has been delayed, Square Enix has confirmed a new launch date for the game. Final Fantasy XV will be released globally on November 29--nearly two months later than its previously scheduled September 30 launch date.According to a statement released by Square Enix, the new date "will allow the development teams time to further polish and conduct quality testing so that the reality of the game can match the expectations of both the fans and the creative teams."Game director Hajime Tabata said: "From the moment we joined this project, our vision was to create a level of freedom and realism previously unseen in the series. Regrettably, we need a little bit more time to deliver on this vision and are confident that this new release date will help us achieve this. Users can also jazz up their photos with filters. Sound familiar? Facebook Facebook is basically Snapchat's little sister right now and wants to copy everything she does. The social-networking giant unveiled on Friday a tweak to its mobile app, a new main screen it's trying out in Canada and Brazil that looks a lot like Snapchat's home screen, according to BuzzFeed.The potential feature demonstrates just how much inspiration Facebook gets from Snapchat. On Tuesday, Facebook-owned Instagram added an element called Stories, which looks nearly identical to Snapchat Stories.The new home screen in the Facebook app opens up with a forward-facing live camera screen for still shots and videos. As in Snapchat, users can manipulate their images with filters and facial overlays, thanks to Facebook's March purchase of startup Masquerade.Facebook believes a focus on sharing photos and videos makes sense because written posts are becoming a thing of the past. Enlarge Image Softbank Pepper, Japan's friendly neighbourhood robotic humanoid companion, is finally coming to the United States -- but just for a week.The robot will be greeting customers at B8ta, a tech store in San Francisco, Califoia, from August 11 to 18, according to the store's Facebook page. Pepper made its debut in Japan, where it's been sold in 1,000-unit batches. Each time Japanese telco Softbank sends Pepper to the market, it sells out in seconds. Pepper has since also made appearances in Europe. The robot is programmed to communicate with users, follow vocal commands, read human emotions and react accordingly. Though it's available for purchase to regular Joes in Japan, it's main use inteationally has been to greet and serve customers at supermarkets, stores, hotels and the like. RoadshowNewsCar IndustryTesla posts $150 million Q2 loss, may miss 2016 delivery targetsTesla has posted Q2 2016 eaings and, while the word isn't resoundingly terrible, there's more bad news to be found than good. We'll start with the good, Tesla posting $1.56 billion in non-GAAP revenue for Q2. That's up from $1.2 billion in the same period last year. Total vehicle deliveries of 14,402 (9,764 Model S, 4,638 Model X) is also a big bump from this period last year, when Tesla shipped 11,507 vehicles. Tesla also says that average price of the Model S is up three percent. That's the good, here's the bad: Tesla posted a $150 million non-GAAP loss, which amounts to $1.06 per share. That's about double what analysts had figured. The company is also looking like it may come up short on its goal of delivering 80,000 cars this year, as it shipped 14,820 in Q1. So, we're still well-short of half. However, Tesla indicated that "almost half" of its Q2 production occurred in the last four weeks of the quarter, meaning we're on a pretty serious ramp -- assuming that rate continues.Despite all that, Tesla's stock price seems to be weathering the bad news, in after-hours trading up a few points from its $225.79 close. It's been on a strong rally over the past month since the initial announcement of a merger with SolarCity, a deal that was initially met with a fair bit of skepticism. The official opening of the Gigafactory last week is also surely helping to buoy investor spirits. Christof Stache/AFP/Getty Images When the EPA announced that it would place extra scrutiny on approving new vehicles in the wake of Volkswagen's diesel debacle, it was assumed that there'd be a number of delays. After an incredibly lengthy review process, BMW finally got approval to sell its 2017 diesel vehicles in the US.The Environmental Protection Agency approved BMW's 2017 diesels for sale on Friday, an EPA representative told Reuters. "We tested the vehicles every which way from Sunday," said Chris Grundler, who runs the EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality. Diesels represent about four percent of BMW's US sales.While BMW received approval, Daimler is still waiting on the go-ahead to sell its MY2017 Mercedes-Benz diesel models. I reported earlier this week that the C-Class diesel is delayed, likely until 2017, because of this new scrutiny on diesel approvals. Thankfully, similar to BMW, diesels don't comprise a large portion of the brand's US sales.Nevertheless, it's likely that we'll see delays of this ilk continue for the foreseeable future. Volkswagen really screwed the regulatory pooch when it admitted to willfully deceiving the feds by installing software meant to curtail emissions in lab tests. Snapchat ups its game with new city-specific stickers. Oscar Gutierrez/CNET While you sip your nitro coffee out of a mason jar in a tiny San Francisco coffee shop, you can now snap a selfie and add a "hipster" sticker designed just for the city. The photo- and video-sharing app Snapchat on Tuesday launched Geostickers, allowing users to send city-specific stickers along with their snaps to friends. The new feature follows the trend of using geocentric elements in messaging, like the geo-filters Snapchat already provides. The stickers will first be available in 10 major cities, including San Francisco, New York City, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Paris and London. The news comes on the same day the Facebook-owned Instagram launched its Snapchat-esque "Stories" feature, which allows users to publish 24-hour reels of content to their feeds. Some of San Francisco's 15 stickers provide a satirical look at the city. One is of an angry sheep-looking creature yelling about rising rent, while another shows a plump walrus with a disapproving look beneath the caption "tech snob," according to TechCrunch. It already has videos from the two other majors, Universal Music and Sony Music Entertainment, which together own Vevo. (YouTube's parent Google and outside investor Abu Dhabi Media also hold stakes.)For Vevo, Waer Music checks off a big box as it prepares to launch a subscription service. Aiming to set up a service that it hopes is worth paying for, Vevo also revamped its app last month for the second time in less than a year. Vevo's ambition is to build a sleek app catering to music video lovers strongly enough to get them to subscribe Vevo or watch more there, even though they can already do the same on YouTube. Waer was crucial for launching with a complete product. Waer's deal with Vevo marks a flurry of activity for the label's video catalog. Last week, Waer was the first of the majors to license its videos to Vadio, a start-up that plugs in official music-video feeds into apps and websites.Tuesday, Vevo and Waer said select "premium" videos from Waer Music Group artists would be added to Vevo.com and the Vevo mobile app within days. He is, however, having to go via the doghouse.As CBS Sports reports, Green took an intimate self-portrait of what is sometimes referred to as one's "manhood" and sent it to Snapchat's My Story.Should you have not availed yourself of this feature, Snapchat helpfully explains: "Adding a Snap to your Story allows Snapchatters to view your Snap an unlimited number of times for 24 hours (unless you delete it, of course!)."I feel fairly sure that Green didn't want Snapchatters to gawk at his nether regions across all regions of the world an unlimited number of times.His initial reaction was, however, a touch flaccid. He tued to Twitter and offered: "Hacked..... Can't win right now."The general reaction -- as when most celebrities claim to have been hacked after a technological faux pas -- was disbelief and a touch of jocular sco.And so it was that, as ESPN's Calvin Watkins reported on Twitter, Green came clean: "Draymond Green said he pushed the wrong button regarding an inappropriate picture on Snapchat.
