Watch a double eclipse of the sun as seen from outer space - CNET

  • [embedded content] Twice a year, around the time of the autumnal and veal equinoxes, is the Solar Dynamics Observatory's eclipse season. From its vantage point in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, the SDO's view of the sun is blocked once a day by the Earth. And on the rare occasion, both the Earth and the moon pass between the SDO and the sun -- a rare double eclipse. One of these took place on September 1, when first the Earth, then the moon, were captured blocking out the sun as the SDO filmed the whole thing in hi-res. It's not quite as dramatic as a solar eclipse take from the Earth, but it's still interesting if you know what you're looking at. Normally a solar eclipse seen from Earth, as the moon passes between the sun and us, has sharp crisp edges, but a lunar eclipse, where the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, is a little fuzzier. It's the same for the SDO eclipses, but write large. • Apple releases iOS 9.3.4 update to squash security bug - CNET

  • Apple's latest iOS update resolves another security flaw. Screenshot by Lance Whitney/CNET Apple's latest update to its iOS software fixes a security hole that could have been exploited to take control of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Released on Thursday, iOS 9.3.4 addresses the problem as one in which an "application may be able to execute arbitrary code with keel privileges," according to an Apple support page. That means an attacker could execute virtually any command, including one that would gain control of your iOS device.iOS 9.3.4 fixes that vulnerability, the latest in a long line of flaws discovered since iOS 9 was released almost a year ago. Yes, iOS 9 is approaching its first anniversary, and bugs are still being uncovered. That points to the difficulty in finding flaws that can affect any piece of software. Apple can do all the inteal testing it wants. But many vulnerabilities remain undiscovered until users either stumble upon them or make a concerted effort to find them. In this case, the flaw in iOS 9.3.3 was found and exploited by a Chinese jailbreaking team called Pangu. In late July, the Pangu team released a tool that allowed users to jailbreak their iOS devices. On its support page, Apple actually credited the folks at Pangu for discovering the flaw, serving as a not-so-subtle nod that iOS 9.3.4 also renders their new jailbreak ineffective. Apple frowns upon jailbreaking, a process that allows you to bypass Apple's restrictions, thus letting you tap into certain features and install software not approved by the company. Apple was users that jailbreaking can leave their devices more susceptible to security vulnerabilities, a shorter battery life and the inability to install future updates, among other problems. Jailbreaking plays like a game of cat and mouse. Hackers attempt to jailbreak the latest version of iOS, which leads Apple to create an updated versio, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Britney Spears' first album in three years will be Apple Music exclusive - CNET

  • Enlarge Image Britney Spears/Twitter Spotify has suffered another blow in the ongoing online music-streaming battle: Britney Spears' "Glory", her first album since 2013, will be an Apple Music exclusive. The news was announced by Spears herself, who said on Twitter that the album would be dropping on August 26.Both Apple Music and Tidal have managed to snag their own share of exclusives this year, but the same can't be said for Spotify. Frank Ocean's "Boys Don't Cry" will be an Apple Music exclusive upon its release this Friday, and Drake's "Views" was exclusive to the service for a week back in April. It'll remain to be seen if the albums by Spears and Ocean remain exclusive, however. Kanye West first released "The Life of Pablo" as a Tidal exclusive, and even claimed it would never come to Apple Music, but it made its way to both Apple Music and Spotify. Meanwhile, Beyonce's Lemonade remains a Tidal exclusive. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • This exercise equipment doubles as a video game controller (Tomorrow Daily 401 show notes) - CNET

  • Japanese researchers at the University of Tokyo showed off an interesting concept: a case that gives smartphones wheels and enables them to roll around on their own. • Nintendo shares more than doubled since Pokemon Go launch - CNET

  • Screenshot by Michelle Starr/CNET Pokemon Go isn't even available around the entire world yet, and Nintendo's shares have seen an astronomic rise. On July 5, Nintendo's shares were 14,490 Japanese yen. On July 19, they closed out at 31,770 Japanese yen. However, it's not all roses: since the launch of the augmented-reality game, stocks have seen their first significant fall, around 11 percent, from that high to 28,430 Japanese yen at time of writing. However, that's still the highest Nintendo's shares have been since April 2010, when they hit 32,100 Japanese yen. The game has proven insanely popular, and broken the record as the fastest mobile game ever to hit 10 million downloads. To date, it has been downloaded over 30 million times around the world. Like all insanely popular fads, a drop in popularity is only to be expected. It will probably rise yet again in the coming days when the game finally launches in Pokemon's home country, Japan.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Katy Perry releases new song 'Rise' exclusively on Apple Music - CNET

  • Katy Perry Katy Perry is the latest artist to forgo Spotify in favor of Apple Music. The singer debuted her new song "Rise" on Apple's streaming service late Thursday night. While the song can also be found on the singer's Vevo YouTube page, it isn't available on either Spotify or Tidal. The song is exclusive to Apple Music subscribers for the time being and can only be purchased through the iTunes store. "This is a song that's been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface," Perry said about the song during an appearance on the Today Show. "I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite. I know that together we can rise above the fear... in our country, and around the world." Apple has been making a push for exclusive content in effort to attract new subscribers to the service. In December, the company partnered with Taylor Swift to release a behind-the-scenes concert video shot during the pop's star's world tour. Apple Music and iTunes were also the first services to offer Drake's new album "Views". Apple Music is available on both Android and iOS for $9.99 a month. • AI, Frankenstein? Not so fast, experts say - CNET

  • Ask Apple's Siri digital assistant if she's evil, and she'll respond curtly, "Not really." Repeat a famous line from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey," in which a computer on a spaceship kills nearly all the human crew, and Siri groans. "Oh, not again." And who can blame her? We humans have a morbid fascination with machines rising up to wipe us out or to enslave us as cocooned, flesh-and-blood battery packs. You can see that vision of the future streaming over Netflix whenever you want. Face it. For every lovable R2-D2 and C-3PO from the Star Wars universe, it's the dark side that seems to resonate most: the Cylons, who nearly eradicate human civilization in "Battlestar Galactica," or Skynet and its murderous robot warriors from the Terminator movies. That gets under the skin of those working in the field of artificial intelligence, the science of computers that will someday resemble humans in their sweeping, world-altering capabilities, if not their physical form. AI is something we know, or think we know, better as a character from science fiction, grim or otherwise, than as an app in reality. The experts are having none of that. "Most of the Hollywood scenarios that we see are completely implausible," says Yann LeCun, Facebook's director of AI research.Philosopher and author Nick Bostrom is sounding the alarm over the dangers of artificial intelligence. Nick Bostrom Still, there's a loud contingent of AI detractors out there, convinced that the emergence of highly sophisticated machines means grave dangers ahead. Science and technology luminaries from Stephen Hawking to Bill Gates to Elon Musk have waed us to proceed with caution, or else, even as researchers work to keep a grip on the AI reins. Nick Bostrom, a philosopher and author of "Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies," is at the forefront of sounding the alarm over the dangers. If machine i, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Evidence mounts for a liquid ocean on Pluto - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageSurface features on Pluto, photographed by New Horizons. NASA/JHU APL/SwRI Data from the New Horizons mission revealed many previously unknown things about Pluto, and hinted at others. One tantalising tidbit was the prospect of an ammonia-rich ocean of water under the surface, a liquid sea beneath the frozen plains."Thanks to the incredible data retued by New Horizons, we were able to observe tectonic features on Pluto's surface, update our thermal evolution model with new data and infer that Pluto most likely has a subsurface ocean today," said lead author Noah Hammond, a graduate student in Brown University's Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences. The paper has been published in the joual Geophysical Research Letters. The team updated a thermal model of Pluto based on detailed data from the New Horizons probe, with tectonic features such as fault lines hundreds of kilometres long and up to 4 km (2.5 miles) deep, and mountains of water ice that indicated Pluto is slowly expanding over time. If Pluto had had oceans that completely froze long ago, then the dwarf planet would have been shrinking over time."What New Horizons showed was that there are extensional tectonic features, which indicate that Pluto underwent a period of global expansion," Hammond said. "A subsurface ocean that was slowly freezing over would cause this kind of expansion."How could the water remain liquid so far from the sun? The slow natural decay of radioactive elements in Pluto's core may have been sufficient to keep the water unfrozen beneath the icy surface. Over time, however, that water could have started to refreeze. Since water expands as it tus into ice, this would have produced the features seen on Pluto's surface."We now have half a dozen worlds, like [Satu's moon] Enceladus, [Jupiter's moons] Europa and Ganymede, and now Pluto, that seem to have oceans in their interior, ...ادامه مطلب

  • AT&T doubles down on 5G with second test location - CNET

  • Kelly Nelson/CNET Citizens of Middletown, New Jersey, get ready for a new kind of home Inteet service. AT&T said on Monday that Middletown will join Austin, Texas, as the two locations for using 5G wireless technology as a home broadband service, scheduled for the end of summer. The nation's second largest wireless carrier said early tests with equipment partner Ericsson have yielded speeds of 10 gigabits a second, or 10 times faster than what Google Fiber offers. In comparison, CNET visited Verizon's headquarters and saw its 5G tests run at 3.77 gigabits a second, fast enough to download the entire "Simpsons" series -- nearly 600 high-definition episodes -- in about half an hour. The AT&T test is nearly three times faster. Wireless carriers are ramping up the hype for 5G, the next generation of wireless technology that promises to bring higher speeds, connect more devices and potentially revolutionize the industry. These trials are another reminder that companies such as AT&T are investing in your future. The reality, however, is that mass adoption of 5G as a wireless service is still years away, and many of these tests represent theoretical peak speeds that we may never see in the real world. In addition, the wireless industry still has to settle on standards for 5G, which likely won't happen until 2020. Until then, companies such as AT&T and Verizon are working on 5G-like technology that they believe will eventually get worked into the standards. They are also starting not with a true mobile service, but with a fixed version that acts more like a home Inteet connection. AT&T also said it tapped Nokia alongside other vendors for its 5G work. • Combine every US presidential portrait and get...Frank Underwood? - CNET

  • Do all the presidents really combine to make this one fictional president? Rise Digital If you could somehow take a sample of the genetic material of every US president going back to George Washington and use it to create a hybrid of all 44 men, what would he look like? Seattle marketing outfit Rise Digital decided to do a little experiment to answer this buing question by feeding every presidential portrait into facial-morphing software from Abrosoft that creates a digital "average" or composite of all those faces. The resulting portrait is the face on the left above. Rise Digital claims to see a resemblance to Kevin Spacey's character Francis Underwood from the Netflix show "House of Cards," (as seen on the right), but here at CNET we see a whole lot more of sportscasters Frank Gifford or Al Michaels in that face, or maybe even the younger brother of this composite of every Doctor Who ever. Who do you see in this super-presidential portrait? Let us know in the comments below. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • App gluttons, rejoice: Analyst says iPhone 7 doubles storage to 256GB - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageThe iPhone 6S and 6S Plus successors could double sotrage to 256GB. Sarah Tew/CNET Apple's upcoming iPhone 7 will be available with a whopping 256GB of storage space, matching the iPad Pro and offering lots more room for apps and videos, an analyst firm predicted Wednesday.Today's iPhone 6S and 6S Plus models top out at 128GB of storage. But cheaper component costs will allow Apple to tuck in 256GB, TrendForce said. The firm expects Apple to continue to offer 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models.Another change will be a memory boost to 3GB in the 5.5-inch model, TrendForce said. That increase -- up from 2GB with the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus and 1GB in the 6 and 6 Plus -- should make it easier to run multiple apps at the same time, to handle more operating system features and to accommodate more sophisticated apps. The king of the hill here will still be the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which already today has 4GB of memory.Apple has a lot riding on the iPhone 7. For the first time ever, iPhone shipments shrank in the first quarter of 2016 to 51.2 million units. That's still a formidable and highly profitable figure, but Apple still faces fierce competition from phones powered by Google's Android software. Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.TrendForce also predicted no big change to the iPhone 7's screen technology, a choice that would disappoint fans hoping for rich colors offered by AMOLED display technology. It also predicted a dual-camera module for the 5.5-inch model.Based on other unconfirmed reports, other possible future features of the iPhone 7 include the abandonment of the 3.5-inch headphone jack, a doubling of minimum storage to 32GB, and a shift to a slower-paced three-year update cycle instead of today's two-year cadence with a new exterior and then an S-series inteal upgrade.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Digital bootstrapping: Hyundai releases DIY update kit for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsAuto TechDigital bootstrapping: Hyundai releases DIY update kit for Android Auto and Apple CarPlayIt's as easy as accidentally installing a virus on your computer. If you've ever clicked a pop-up, you'd know that means it's pretty damn easy. Hyundai When you think of do-it-yourself auto work, you might imagine someone changing his or her brakes or oil on the driveway, saving a bit of coin in the process. Now that we're well into the digital age, it's about time that DIY work extended into the same realm, and Hyundai's offering it as we speak. If you own one of several eligible vehicles (requirements are embedded below), you can head over to MyHyundai.com and download the software update to a USB memory stick or the navigation system's SD card. From there, it's as easy as plugging it in and following directions. If you need a little extra help, there are videos available on YouTube to provide more direction. This builds on an earlier DIY update, which granted certain cars Android Auto smartphone connectivity capabilities. More models are likely to be added to the list of cars, including Sonata Hybrid, Veloster and Azera. Update time can take different amounts of time, depending on what car you have and what equipment it contains. Download time is anywhere between 15 minutes and 3 hours, but uploading it to the vehicle takes well under an hour. Some vehicles mandate the use of the nav system's SD card, as well. If you want a dealer to do it for you, you'll be charged labor for the entire installation process, which could run you over $100 easily.Head over to Hyundai's media site if you're interested in leaing all the nitty-gritty details.Installation might be easy, but figuring out if your car is eligible for the upgrade is a little tougher.
