Greece's refugee crisis through a different lens - CNET

  • This is part of our Road Trip 2016 summer series "Life, Disrupted," about how technology is helping with the global refugee crisis -- if at all.The main street in Mytilene, on the Greek island of Lesvos, wraps around the green-tinted Aegean like a horseshoe. Brightly painted buildings line the road while wooden sailboats bob near the pier. It's beautiful. It's also where I bump into Waleed, a young boy I'd met earlier that day at the gate of the Kara Tepe refugee camp just outside town.He was fishing with two other migrants.I ask where his mom is. He points back toward the camp. "Kara Tepe," he tells me.And his father?"Dad. Syria. Psh, Psh," he says, pointing a finger to his head while imitating the sound of gunfire.I say, "I'm sorry," but he shrugs it off. That's life in Syria, where he came from. It was another reminder of the pain refugees have faced both at home and in Greece, where they fled to safety. • Scenes from Greece's refugee crisis: Tales of tech - CNET

  • Most people think of Greece as a great place to escape from the stress of everyday life. But not to the more than 57,000 people now trapped there. In 2015, thousands of refugees and migrants fled war and chaos in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq and headed to Europe seeking shelter. A year later, many are living in squalid camps and abandoned buildings in Greece, waiting for asylum or a chance at legal residence in the European Union. During a 10-day trip in June, we talked to officials, migrants and activists in Athens, Lesvos -- the Greek island where most refugees first set foot in Europe last year -- and Thessaloniki, near the closed border of Macedonia, shutting migrants' way out. Our mission: to see if the technology that many of us use every day -- phones, the inteet, messaging apps, social networks -- is helping during this crisis. Or not. We met people from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Morocco and Somalia, all on a jouey they hoped would take them to safer and better lives. Everyone (except the children) has a phone. All rely on the inteet to lea what's new and important. Facebook is a tool for escape and escapism. Power strips are the new watercoolers. Here are a few stories of their stories.Google it Five men sit around a battered, wooden patio table just outside the gate at Kara Tepe, an official refugee camp on Lesvos. All have their phones plugged into two power strips on top of the table. Smoke wafts from their cigarettes. Beko Al-Falahi, a 28-year-old from Iraq, tells us he used to work as a US Army translator. He's wearing a camo hat, flip-flops and a shirt that reads, "Grace isn't a little prayer you say before receiving a meal. It's a way of life."In April, Pope Francis visited migrant detention centers on the Greek island of Lesvos. Beko Al-Falahi shows a photo of the Pope holding his son Tayim. • Uber said to make $500M investment in global mapping - CNET

Try half a billion dollars. That is how much the San Francisco-based ride-hailing company is getting ready to invest in an ambitious global mapping project, the Financial Times reports Sunday. Other companies working on technologies to support driverless cars include Google, Ford, Nissan and General Motors. In a bid to get an edge on the competition, Uber has partnered with satellite imaging company DigitalGlobe, the company that provides much of the imagery for Google Maps, Google Earth and TerraServer.Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Here's how Doom avoids splitting up players with its new premium map DLC - CNET

  • Another big free update arrives for Doom tomorrow, July 29, and will be followed soon after by the game's first premium downloadable content. That consists in part of new maps, something that could be problematic for the game's player base, but developer id Software has a plan to avoid that.Typically when a multiplayer game receives premium DLC maps, it breaks up the user base--those without the DLC can't play with those who do have it except on servers only running the original maps. That will still be the case in Doom, but it avoids splitting up groups of friends. Through a feature id calls PartyPlay, Doom allows people who don't own the DLC to play on the DLC maps as long as they're in a party with someone who does own it.This first DLC pack, Unto the Evil, consists of three new multiplayer maps, a demon (the Harvester), a weapon (the EMG Mark V pistol), a piece of equipment (the Kinetic Mine), armor, hack modules, and more. All of this is usable in existing maps and modes. You can get a quick glimpse at it toward the end of the trailer above. It arrives on August 5 for $15 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Bethesda Softworks The primary focus of the video is on the free update coming on July 29. This adds a pair of new modes, both of which are playable on existing and future maps. Exodus is a one-flag capture-the-flag game where the flag and each team's base is constantly moving, while Sector is a territory mode where you try to capture zones and hold onto them. The update also introduces new SnapMap functionality, such as customizable weapon wheels and jump pads, new modules, more weapons, another playable demon (the Mancubus), and more. While this will be available tomorrow, id said it will provide a full list of detailed changes next week.Additionally, this weekend marks Doom's first-ever double XP event. From July 29 at 12 PM ET until August 1 at 12 PM, all players will level up twice, ...ادامه مطلب

  • RoadshowNewsCar IndustryApple Maps, Parkopedia team up to make parking, charging easierEnlarge ImageIf you want more info than is displayed on Apple Maps, you can click over to Parkopedia's website or iOS app. Andrew Krok/Roadshow From poorly labeled pricing to a lack of lights or any semblance of security, finding good parking is a pain in the ass. Your phone's map might not offer much help, either. But that's changed if you have Apple Maps, as the tech giant's teamed up with Parkopedia to make finding a spot significantly easier. Now, when you search for "parking" in Apple Maps, you'll get more than just a list of lots. Click on one, and it'll pull up some relevant Parkopedia information, including the number of spaces, the lot's hours, whether or not it's lit and whether or not it has EV charging. If you want to get more in depth, there's a button that'll take you to Parkopedia's app.Parkopedia told 9 to 5 Mac that it plans on adding more specific pricing information, so that buyers can find the cheapest lot in a given area. If you have iOS 9, your Apple Maps app has likely already been updated to reflect this new addition. That said, only certain regions have access to the information right now, but it's rolling out globally over time. This isn't Apple's first foray into third-party map partnerships. It's already worked with Yellow Pages, TripAdvisor, Yelp and others to include relevant information wherever's necessary. Considering the titan-like ubiquity of Google Maps, this could give Apple's own mapping app a popularity boost. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Google Maps gets cleaner look, areas of interest - CNET

  • Google Maps now contains "areas of interest" that are covered with an orange shade. Google Google on Monday unveiled a new version of Maps that has a cleaner look and incorporates smart areas of interest. The new look does away with elements that aren't absolutely required, like road outlines. This allows for more room to display useful information, such as traffic and transit lines. In addition, the typography has been improved to make street names, point of interest, transit stations and so on, more distinguishable from other items on the map. A new feature called "areas of interest," not to be confused with "points of interest," is also part of the update. These areas are covered with a shade of orange and when zoomed in will display the details of each venue. More information of the venue will be revealed with a tap. With this new feature, users can quickly discover surrounding area or even any place in the word just via browsing around Google Maps.Enlarge ImageThe new corlor scheme of Google Maps. • Ford pumps cash into company creating maps for self-driving cars - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCar IndustryFord pumps cash into company creating maps for self-driving carsDearbo's on a bit of a spending spree, but it's still cheaper than trying to do all this by itself. Bill Pugliano/Getty Images Knowing that the road ahead is best forged with teamwork, automakers are throwing serious money behind tech startups with an interest in self-driving cars. Ford is already deeply involved with these sorts of investments, but its portfolio is growing once again with an investment in a company building maps for self-driving cars.Civil Maps' goal is to create a set of high definition maps that self-driving cars can use to navigate. The company takes data from Lidar and cameras and translates it into a format cars can understand. It prides itself on having a small data footprint, making it easier to transmit data to and from vehicles. "Autonomous vehicles require a totally new kind of map," said Civil Maps CEO Sravan Puttagunta in a statement. "Civil Maps' scalable map generation process enables fully autonomous vehicles to drive like humans do -- identifying on-road and off-road features even when they might be missing, deteriorated or hidden from view and letting a car know what it can expect along its route."The company received $6.6 million in seed funding from Ford and five other investors. Civil Maps isn't a large company, with just 16 employees on the payroll. Ford's other recent work with startups includes a $182.2 million investment in software company Pivotal, and its Ford Fusion sedan is the basis for an autonomous test car Uber has deployed in Pennsylvania. This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service - if this is your content and you're reading it on someone else's site, please read the FAQ at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php#publishers.Recommended article from FiveFilters.org: Most Labour MPs in the UK Are Revolting., ...ادامه مطلب

  • With Tango, Google is now equipped to map the entire world -- inside and out - CNET

  • Open up Google Maps on your phone and, depending on where you are, you'll see some streets, some buildings and a blue dot. That blue dot is you, in "YOU ARE HERE" form. When you move, it moves. The dot is helpful when you're walking around outside, but if you're indoors -- in an airport, a mall, or even a conference venue, like I am today -- you might as well be in no-man's land.Google wants to change that with something called Tango. The initiative, previously called "Project Tango," is Google's ambitious plan to map the indoor world. Google Maps is already wildly popular, with more than 1 billion users. But whereas Maps is a cartographer's dream on steroids, Tango isn't conceed with streets and rivers and national parks. Tango is for everything undeeath rooftops: hallways, offices, ballrooms and -- perhaps more importantly for Google's advertising ambitions -- the stuff inside those rooms, like fuiture or products on shelves. On Thursday, the Chinese device maker Lenovo unveiled the first consumer smartphone infused with Google's Tango technology. The phone, called the Phab 2 Pro, will cost $500, have a 6.4-inch screen and be available by September. (The phone itself is hulking, and Jeff Meredith, the head of Lenovo's mobile business group, said both smaller and bigger screen phones are coming.) But back to the maps -- and that blue dot. When you're indoors, "all it tells you is, 'You're in the airport!' Which is not super helpful," Johnny Lee, head of Tango, said in an interview Thursday at the Masonic, the San Francisco venue where Google and Lenovo unveiled the Tango phone. It doesn't come in handy when you want to tell someone to meet you at Baggage Claim 4."It's about making a better blue dot," he said.Tango can map out a room in 3D. So you could digitally see what kind of fuiture would fit in your house. James Martin/CNET For Google, the stakes are huge: If Tango takes off, th, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Earth, Google and Fire: Some jerk apparently tried to torch a Google mapping car - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsEarth, Google and Fire: Some jerk apparently tried to torch a Google mapping carEnlarge ImageWhile Google uses satellite imagery for Google Earth, I'm assuming the MVPD meant to call it a Google Maps car, as it regularly uses vehicles to flesh out its cartographical knowledge. Stephen Shankland/CNET Human beings do dumb crap all the time, there's no surprise there. But when people start going after people, vehicles or other nouns that are doing absolutely nothing wrong, that's really when you begin to question the motivations of your fellow man. Case in point, someone might have lit a Google mapping car on fire.According to the Mountain View Police Department's blog (Google's headquartered in Mountain View, Califoia), firefighters and officers responded to a report of a fire late last night. The found a few fire-damaged objects, including the ground itself, a bit of a building and, for some reason, a "Google Earth demo car," which I believe is just a standard mapping car.The police claimed that two "incendiary devices" were found at the scene. As it's an active investigation, the police can't comment further than the blog post. Google didn't immediately retu a request for comment, either. But seriously, who the hell tries to torch a car built for creating better maps? Either someone really loves waiting in traffic, or someone considers Google's mapping efforts to be a weird invasion of privacy, despite the fact that the car isn't asking to be let into your home and public roads are exactly that -- available to the public. Or maybe it was just a bored group of thrill-seeking teenagers.Whatever the case may be, MVPD has the incendiary devices in the lab for testing, and the department will talk more about the case when new information comes to light. The Live Video map can be found under Apps in the left hand panel of Facebook.com. It shows the locations of all current streams as tiny blue dots. The dots will be larger the more viewers they have, however. If you hover your cursor over a larger dot, it'll show lines indicating where in the world people are viewing from, as illustrated in the image above. The map is currently being rolled out, and so far we've been able to find it in the UK and the US.
