u200bIntel expects USB Type-C could help kill the 3.5mm audio jack - CNET

Enlarge ImageThe Intel Developer Forum takes place in San Francisco. Stephen Shankland/CNET One venerable computing technology, USB, could be about to help kill off an even older standard, the 3.5mm audio jack. The 3.5mm audio jack was popularized as the way to plug headphones into Sony's portable Walkman tape player and got a new lease on life as a way to handle audio on virtually every mobile phone and PC. But if Intel and its allies get their way, the new USB Type-C connector that's spread to some high-end PCs and phones will replace it in coming years. One big problem with removing the 3.5mm jack is that countless sets of earbuds and headphones become suddenly useless unless you buy an easily misplace...

Artificially intelligent: A brief glossary of the ideas behind AI - CNET

What if the scariest thing about AI is the vocabulary test?Sure, some people worry about machines putting an end to humanity as we know it, but that may be no more likely than a Mayan-predicted apocalypse. Artificial intelligence, though, may actually bring us lots of things we'll like: self-driving cars, caregivers for the sick, personal assistants that know exactly what you need, when you need it.Yes, there is math and science, and a lot of it, behind the current boom in AI research, products and services. But you don't have to have a Ph.D. to get a handle on the basic ideas. Here's a quick rundown of some notions you should know.agent Software that reacts to things happening around it without the direct instruction of a user. Slow but steady progress as Intel strives to be more diverse - CNET

Intel hopes to be much more diverse by 2020, but it still has a long way to go. Ben Fox Rubin/CNET It's been a year since Intel kicked off a bold, $300 million initiative to make itself and the tech industry more diverse. The results so far show progress, but are slow going. The world's largest chipmaker came out with its 2015 diversity report Wednesday, showing it increased the number of women and underrepresented minorities in its roughly 53,000-employee company, though in some cases the percentage changes were tiny. The number of women employed by Intel in the US rose to 24.8 percent from 23.5 percent a year earlier. But, the number of underrepresented minorities, including African Americans and Hisp...
