Porsche's first real utility vehicle dates back to the 1950s - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsSUVsPorsche's first real utility vehicle dates back to the 1950sEnlarge ImageThis thing is positively awesome. Bonhams The story usually goes that Porsche built its first SUV, the Cayenne, in order to keep the lights on while it continued to build sports cars. But Porsche's first utility vehicle was not, in fact, the Cayenne. It was actually the Jagdwagen, which is not only a sweet name, but also a pretty beefy 4x4.As with other utility vehicles that came about in the mid-20th century, the Jagdwagen was built for military use. It was positioned as a spiritual brother to Volkswagen's Kübelwagen and the Willys MB. Sadly, it never made it to production, as Germany's army chose to award its contract to the less expensive DKW Munga. The Jagdwagen weighs about 2,200 pounds, which is a little less than a new Miata. • RoadshowNewsCar IndustryPorsche's electric Mission E will be a job creatorIt's gorgeous and it creates jobs -- seriously, it should run for office. Porsche Maybe Porsche should run for President. When it comes time to build its all-new, electric sports car, Porsche plans to add a number of jobs within its ranks. Looking to work with the German automaker? Now's your chance, maybe.Porsche originally estimated that its Mission E project would add some 1,000 jobs. Now, it's upping that estimate to 1,400. It will also expand its number of available apprenticeships from 150 to 220, Reuters reports. Most of the jobs will be located at Porsche's Zuffenhausen facilities, where a new paint shop and assembly line will be dedicated to Mission E production."With the factory for the Mission E, we will usher in a new era with new technologies", said Andreas Haffner, a member of Porsche's executive board, in a statement. "That's why we're hiring new people -- but it's just as important to improve the skills of our current workforce." • 2017 Porsche Panamera: Here's what's cool - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsSedans2017 Porsche Panamera: Here's what's coolThere's no getting around the fact that the old Panamera was a hippo of a thing. It wasn't pretty at all. In its many guises it was very fast, very efficient and very...Porsche, but to accuse it of beauty would be doing the word a disservice. Other than the look, very little needed improving, but Porsche has decided to make the whole thing better anyway. A quick chat with Dr. Geot Doellner, head of all things Panamera, revealed some things we knew, and a couple that we didn't.This one's a looker, that's for sure. Porsche It's all-newThe new Panamera is all new, all the time. From the base components to the exterior, there's nary a hint of old Panamera in there. Well, aside from one thing: Dr. Doellner and team know the concept is pretty perfect. Four big seats in a big car to go big distances (presumably to make big decisions about big business). As such, it's new, but still kind of familiar. It brings the prettyC'mon, they had to make it prettier. There's no way it could have gotten much worse, right? Porsche's aim here was to bring its silhouette closer in line with the 911 -- one of the most recognizable profiles in the automotive world. Even though the new car is bigger than the old in every dimension, it looks smaller than the old car. And it's much better looking -- smoother, sleeker, better. All the light touches...is new. Porsche Man, it's fastThe Turbo S will lap the Nurburgring in 7:38, which is faster than a Mercedes-McLaren SLR. It managed the run on normal road tires, too. The Turbo does come with 550 horses and a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharge V-8 that'll hurl it from 0-60mph in just 3.4 seconds, so if it was slow it'd be a heck of a surprise. There are other models coming out at launch, as well: The 4S for the US and a diesel mod, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Porsches, Porsches, Porsches and some other stuff: Our week on Instagram - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCar CulturePorsches, Porsches, Porsches and some other stuff: Our week on InstagramSome weeks, there's a good, overarching theme to bring together our plea to have you follow us on Instagram. If you haven't figured it out by this point, we've got a pretty solid theme going this week. If you actually haven't figured it out by this point, how are you clicking through to articles without reading the title? I'm actually impressed, if that's the case.Carfection's week was dominated by the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman, a car that's ditched its flat-six engine in favor of something that sounds like a broken Subaru. Alex also checked out his local Formula E race, and Drew snagged some awesome pictures from the Formula 1 race at Silverstone. Not a bad week, not a bad week at all.As for Roadshow, I spent the whole week with a Porsche 911 and managed to wrangle up enough restraint to not post 1,400 pictures. Tim went to Italy to drive the Aston Martin DB11, something that made the rest of us very jealous. Antuan checked out the new Accord Hybrid in a gorgeous shade of bronze, and Emme's off-roading Lexus vehicles in Oregon as part of the Heels and Wheels event. I won't mock Chris Paukert this week, because he's sick and that wouldn't be very nice. • Porsche recalls all the 918 Spyders out of an abundance of caution - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCoupesPorsche recalls all the 918 Spyders out of an abundance of cautionSome automakers are content to recall small batches of vehicles based on a decently large issue. Others are willing to eat the negative PR involved with a full-line recall. Porsche falls into the latter category this time, as it's recalled every single one of its 918 Spyder hypercars for an issue with two screws.According to Porsche, the 918's own original parts catalog has a misprint, swapping two unique screws -- one for the seat belt mount, and one for the belt reel mount. They're one-time-use screws, so once they're in, they aren't meant to come back out. Porsche is conceed that this catalog error could result in incorrect screws being used in its 918 Spyder, so it's recalled the whole lot of 'em.When you bring your vehicle into the dealer (or demand they come get it, because you paid a million dollars for the car, damn it), technicians will inspect the two screws to ensure they're in the correct locations. If they're wrong, Porsche will replace them for free. It's already rectified the error in its own catalog.People like to talk about how the very-well-heeled are a different type of person than you or I. It's refreshing to know that they, too, must suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous recall misfortune. Porsche 918 Spyder is a hybrid hypercar... See full gallery , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Microsoft teases new Windows 2-in-1 device from Porsche Design - CNET

  • Enlarge Image Claire Reilly/CNET During its keynote at Computex 2016, Microsoft went over many of the new features coming in the Windows Anniversary Update, as well as announcing the Windows Holographic shared platform for AR and VR and the company's strategy for what it's calling "mixed reality".But before the focus tued to the future of Hololens, Microsoft took a look at some of the new 2-in-1 devices primed to make the most of the new features in the upcoming update. Nick Parker, corporate vice president of Microsoft's OEM division, jumped on stage to talk about some of the recently revealed devices, such as the Dell Inspiron 7000 and the Asus Zenbook 3. He also gave a very quick glimpse of a 2-in-1 device from Porsche Design, the team behind a number of LaCie storage devices. Oh, and this $3,000 sound bar that actually has the muffler from a Porsche 911 GT3 car built in. A render of the Porsche 2-in-1. Microsoft Parker would only say that the 2-in-1 was being made by a local Taiwanese hardware partner, but we do know that it'll have an Intel processor and a 13.3-inch screen. It will also ship with a pen, presumably for all the new Windows Ink features on the way. The device was secretive enough that it was whisked away from the stage before anyone was allowed up for photos, so all we have are a few shots of the engineering sample Parker was displaying and a render of the device. Stand by for more information, with the 2-in-1 slated for a release around the start of 2017. • Porsche Design's $3,000 soundbar includes a 911 GT3 muffler - Roadshow

  • RoadshowCar CulturePorsche Design's $3,000 soundbar includes a 911 GT3 mufflerEnlarge ImageWhy this is filed under "For Men" on Porsche Design's website has yet to be determined. Porsche Design Surely, at some point in history, a human being has retued from a long night of drinking and decided to create a sound system using car-exhaust components. In fact, it appears that a whole company's worth of decision-makers did exactly that, because Porsche Design will sell you a soundbar built from a muffler. For about $3,000.Of course, it's not just any old muffler -- it's the silencer and tailpipes from a Porsche 911 GT3, one of its most capable 911 variants. Even better, the pipes aren't just bolted onto your average soundbar. The parts actually help resonate the sound, adding depth and volume. With a 200-watt output, Bluetooth connectivity, analog (cinch) and digital (coaxial, optional) inputs, it's a pretty slick little soundbar. Porsche isn't the first company to make an exhaust into a sound system, though. Hammacher-Schlemmer, a toy catalog for one-percenter adults, will tu $8,500 into a speaker dock made from old Formula 1 exhaust manifolds. A company called IXOOST (please don't ask how to pronounce that) will do something similar for about $5,500.When you look at it in context, the Porsche Design soundbar is actually kind of a bargain.
