Kaepernick's refusal to stand for national anthem roils Twitter - CNET

Stack/YouTube screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET As protests go, it was as silent as you could get. While the rest of his team stood for the national anthem during a preseason game on Friday night, quarterback Colin Kaepeick sat on the bench. When asked about it by NFL.com, Kaepeick explained: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. • Porsche's first real utility vehicle dates back to the 1950s - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsSUVsPorsche's first real utility vehicle dates back to the 1950sEnlarge ImageThis thing is positively awesome. Bonhams The story usually goes that Porsche built its first SUV, the Cayenne, in order to keep the lights on while it continued to build sports cars. But Porsche's first utility vehicle was not, in fact, the Cayenne. It was actually the Jagdwagen, which is not only a sweet name, but also a pretty beefy 4x4.As with other utility vehicles that came about in the mid-20th century, the Jagdwagen was built for military use. It was positioned as a spiritual brother to Volkswagen's Kübelwagen and the Willys MB. Sadly, it never made it to production, as Germany's army chose to award its contract to the less expensive DKW Munga. The Jagdwagen weighs about 2,200 pounds, which is a little less than a new Miata. • Businesses can't Tweet #TeamUSA or #Rio2016 because reasons - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageIf you're a business, you can only show so much of your Olympic pride. DANIEL SANNUM LAUTEN/AFP/Getty Images It's all fun and good until someone tweets the wrong thing. When the Olympics start Friday, social media is likely to light up with pride for sports, countries and various teams as they come together in Rio to compete for the next few weeks. But your local plumber will have to sit it out.Businesses have long been expected to keep their Olympic excitement to a minimum, as they can't use the famous five rings or other symbols and phrases from the games, since they're all trademarked. The conce is that the organizations around the Olympics don't want corporate sponsorships to lose value -- imagine the horror if people watching the 100m sprint started thinking about Pepsi instead of a Coke. But this Olympics is happening at a time when a billion people are using Facebook on their mobile device every day. Social media has become so pervasive that when you add in Snapchat and Twitter, the combined populations of people using these services is larger than any country on Earth. So of course, in addition to the rules you can't use the Olympics' trademarked words or phrases, AdWeek notes businesses also can't use certain hashtags, including #TeamUSA or #Rio2016.Never mind Twitter can barely keep people from sending the racist and misogynist messages to the female stars of the latest Ghostbusters movie. Now it'll have to police Olympic hashtags too.Facebook, Twitter and the Olympic organizers didn't respond to requests for comment."Experts' advice to non-sponsor businesses? Tweet very carefully," AdWeek writes. No kidding.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Miss Teen USA under fire for alleged liberal use of N-word in tweets - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageA nightmare past? MissTeenUSA/Twitter screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET You're likely still recovering from the excitement of Miss Teen USA.On Saturday night, 18-year-old Texan Karlie Hay beat four other white blonde girls to win the title.A darker shadow, though, was cast when screenshots of tweets apparently written by her emerged. These, from 2013 and 2014, contained several instances of the N-word and were posted on what appears to be her personal Twitter account, which is now set to private. Hay immediately took to the @RealMissTXteen Twitter account in apparent confirmation of her Twittering past."I admit that I have used language publicly in the past which I am not proud of and that there is no excuse for," she said. She added: "Several years ago, I had many personal struggles and found myself in a place that is not representative of who I am as a person."Hay went on to explain that education and sisterhood of pageant life had helped get her through those trying times. We have all said things in the past that we regret. We just hope that there's no record of those things on Twitter, Instagram or some other social medium with a better memory than Donald Trump's.The Miss Universe Organization, which owns Miss Teen USA, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. However, it issued a statement, reported by Houston's KTRK-TV, which described Hay's language as "unacceptable at any age." The organization added that it was standing by her and is "committed to supporting her continued growth."Hay's pageant page says that her goal is to "become a businesswoman and to continue advocating for those affected by drug and alcohol abuse." • Call John Cusack: 400 boom boxes blast their way on to auction block - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageIf you owned a boombox, it may be somewhere in this room. Trademe For years, I had a boom box that was the envy of all my friends. It boasted not one, but two cassette tape players, so I could pop a recorded tape in one slot, a blank tape in the other, and crank out mix tapes like I was running a factory. Need a love tape so your boyfriend knows just what that Duran Duran song meant to the two of you? Want another copy of that Jane's Addiction tune you taped off the radio? Longing to send a medley of your favorite alt-rock hits to the cute guy you met at camp? Come on over, I think we can do business. My boom box is long gone, but a version of it probably exists somewhere in the collection of 400 boom boxes being sold by New Zealander Craig Kenton, who's been acquiring them for years. Kenton, 45, is a child of the 1980s like me, and his addiction started early."When I was a kid I used to stare goggle-eyed into shop windows wanting them," he told Stuff.co.nz. "They were a real statement of '80s culture."He'd like to keep the blasters together, he writes in the auction comments. "It's too much of an iconic collection to split up," he writes. "It's world famous in the boom box community."I thought my double-tape deck was cool, but Keaton showed a TV reporter one boombox that plays actual vinyl albums, and another with a pop-out keyboard. He's starting the bidding at $20,000, which is a steal that works out to $50 per boombox. John Cusack only needed one in "Say Anything" to make a whole generation of girls swoon. But you'd better stock up on batteries. Kenton writes in the ad, "The big ones take 10 D cells."Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • 2017 Porsche Panamera: Here's what's cool - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsSedans2017 Porsche Panamera: Here's what's coolThere's no getting around the fact that the old Panamera was a hippo of a thing. It wasn't pretty at all. In its many guises it was very fast, very efficient and very...Porsche, but to accuse it of beauty would be doing the word a disservice. Other than the look, very little needed improving, but Porsche has decided to make the whole thing better anyway. A quick chat with Dr. Geot Doellner, head of all things Panamera, revealed some things we knew, and a couple that we didn't.This one's a looker, that's for sure. Porsche It's all-newThe new Panamera is all new, all the time. From the base components to the exterior, there's nary a hint of old Panamera in there. Well, aside from one thing: Dr. Doellner and team know the concept is pretty perfect. Four big seats in a big car to go big distances (presumably to make big decisions about big business). As such, it's new, but still kind of familiar. It brings the prettyC'mon, they had to make it prettier. There's no way it could have gotten much worse, right? Porsche's aim here was to bring its silhouette closer in line with the 911 -- one of the most recognizable profiles in the automotive world. Even though the new car is bigger than the old in every dimension, it looks smaller than the old car. And it's much better looking -- smoother, sleeker, better. All the light touches...is new. Porsche Man, it's fastThe Turbo S will lap the Nurburgring in 7:38, which is faster than a Mercedes-McLaren SLR. It managed the run on normal road tires, too. The Turbo does come with 550 horses and a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharge V-8 that'll hurl it from 0-60mph in just 3.4 seconds, so if it was slow it'd be a heck of a surprise. There are other models coming out at launch, as well: The 4S for the US and a diesel mod, ...ادامه مطلب

  • RoadshowNewsCar CulturePorsches, Porsches, Porsches and some other stuff: Our week on InstagramSome weeks, there's a good, overarching theme to bring together our plea to have you follow us on Instagram. If you haven't figured it out by this point, we've got a pretty solid theme going this week. If you actually haven't figured it out by this point, how are you clicking through to articles without reading the title? I'm actually impressed, if that's the case.Carfection's week was dominated by the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman, a car that's ditched its flat-six engine in favor of something that sounds like a broken Subaru. Alex also checked out his local Formula E race, and Drew snagged some awesome pictures from the Formula 1 race at Silverstone. Not a bad week, not a bad week at all.As for Roadshow, I spent the whole week with a Porsche 911 and managed to wrangle up enough restraint to not post 1,400 pictures. Tim went to Italy to drive the Aston Martin DB11, something that made the rest of us very jealous. Antuan checked out the new Accord Hybrid in a gorgeous shade of bronze, and Emme's off-roading Lexus vehicles in Oregon as part of the Heels and Wheels event. I won't mock Chris Paukert this week, because he's sick and that wouldn't be very nice. • Porsche recalls all the 918 Spyders out of an abundance of caution - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCoupesPorsche recalls all the 918 Spyders out of an abundance of cautionSome automakers are content to recall small batches of vehicles based on a decently large issue. Others are willing to eat the negative PR involved with a full-line recall. Porsche falls into the latter category this time, as it's recalled every single one of its 918 Spyder hypercars for an issue with two screws.According to Porsche, the 918's own original parts catalog has a misprint, swapping two unique screws -- one for the seat belt mount, and one for the belt reel mount. They're one-time-use screws, so once they're in, they aren't meant to come back out. Porsche is conceed that this catalog error could result in incorrect screws being used in its 918 Spyder, so it's recalled the whole lot of 'em.When you bring your vehicle into the dealer (or demand they come get it, because you paid a million dollars for the car, damn it), technicians will inspect the two screws to ensure they're in the correct locations. If they're wrong, Porsche will replace them for free. It's already rectified the error in its own catalog.People like to talk about how the very-well-heeled are a different type of person than you or I. It's refreshing to know that they, too, must suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous recall misfortune. Porsche 918 Spyder is a hybrid hypercar... See full gallery , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Usage up, price down: Chevrolet slashes cost of 4G LTE data - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsAuto TechUsage up, price down: Chevrolet slashes cost of 4G LTE dataEnlarge ImageUsage nearly doubled in a single quarter in 2015. Chevrolet Data isn't cheap, whether it's going to your phone, your games console or your car's embedded modem. Thankfully, one of those destinations is about to cut its data-plan pricing, which...isn't what normally happens. Now, if you opt for a 4G LTE data plan in your Chevrolet, there'll be a little more dough in your pocket. Most plans are now 50 percent cheaper, and there's a new, mid-range option as well. Opting for 1 gigabyte of in-car data each month used to cost $20, but now it's down to $10. The $80, 10-gigs-per-month plan is down to $40, and the annual plan -- where you pay $150 for 10 gigs to be used over the whole year -- now gives you 20GB of data. The new plan rides the line between the 1GB and 10GB offerings. 4GB of data each month will cost you $20. According to Chevrolet, Silverado users consume the most data, followed by Suburban, then Tahoe and Traverse. Come on, Camaro drivers, get with the times!"As more people embrace the technology, it brings down the cost of entry for all users," Laura Keck, OnStar's manager of marketing strategy, said in a statement. "With these lower prices, we expect even more customers to use 4G LTE connectivity during this busy summer driving season." Chevrolet's seen data usage rise every month since it unveiled its 4G LTE in-car connection, and this plan should send those numbers even higher.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Anti-wall crusader Zuckerberg put up 'oppressive' wall, say Hawaii residents - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageWalling himself off, instead of sharing? James Martin/CNET The words were uttered with fervor.Or the minimally raised voice that passes for fervor in Silicon Valley. There was Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying in April: "I hear fearful voices talking about building walls. If the world starts to tu inwards, then our community will just have to work harder to bring people together."He was clearly referring to wall-advocate Donald Trump. But, well now. Here's a tale from the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where Zuckerberg has a home. As Kauai newspaper The Garden Island reports, some local residents are upset because the anti-wall crusader has, oh, built a wall.It used to be that the public had a view of the ocean from a public road. But then workmen -- reportedly hired by Zuckerberg -- started building a wall that obscured the view. "The feeling of it is really oppressive. It's immense," local resident Gy Hall told the Garden Island. "It's really sad that somebody would come in and buy a huge piece of land and the first thing they do is cut off this view that's been available and appreciated by the community here for years."Facebook didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. However, Zuckerberg is known to have bought land on the stunning north shore of Kauai in 2014. He reportedly paid more than $100 million for it.The wall, still under construction, is said to be six feet tall and of as-yet-undetermined length. Another resident, Donna McMillen, explained to the Garden Island: "I'm superunhappy about that. I know that land belongs to Zuckerberg. Money is no option for him. I'm 5'8" and when I'm walking, I see nothing but wall."The Garden Island said that residents have left polite notes to Zuckerberg on the wall, but these have been to down.Local resident Sh, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Brexit 'Leave' campaign wipes website amid accusations of false promises - CNET

  • Gone is the campaign material on the "Vote Leave" website. All that is left is this banner. Screenshot/Vote Leave The successful "Leave" campaign in the UK's EU referendum debate has wiped its website of all vestiges of the material it used to make its pro-Brexit case. The full website has been replaced by a static banner thanking supporters for their hard work and votes, spotted Guardian reporter Alice Ross. An archived version of the site, which features all of the campaign material, can still be seen online. "On 23 June, it's safer to Vote Leave and take back control," the subhead on the website used to say. "We should stop sending £350 million per week to unelected politicians in Brussels, and spend our money on our priorities, like the NHS."This particular claim about using savings made by withdrawing from the EU to fund the UK's health system has been front and centre of team leave's campaign, and was most famously plastered across the official campaign bus. It has also attracted negative attention this weekend, as it became clear that the £350 million reclaimed from the EU would not in fact be spent on the UK's National Health Service.Nigel Farage from the UK Independence Party and lead members of the official Leave campaign all backtracked on the promise this weekend, as it became apparent that there was no official plan for Brexit. The claim about NHS funding still appears as the banner head on the campaign's Twitter page. The Leave campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب
