Bill Clinton, famously, was always hitting on Marge. George Bush Sr. was a neighbor for a while.But as the 2016 race for the US presidency increasingly resembles a "Simpsons" episode, it was inevitable that the animated series take aim at both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.In a short video clip called "3 a.m." -- posted on YouTube on July 30 by Animation on Fox -- we see Homer and Marge grappling with who to support in the upcoming election, as they watch a commercial showing Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The 3 a.m. reference is to an ad from the 2008 campaign when Clinton ran against Barack Obama. While Clinton gets a slight jab in the video, the main focus of the clip is Trump angrily tweeting in bed while taking a break from reading a book of Hitler's speeches. Plus we find out Trump hides his tiny hands in larger fake hands, gets a spray-on tan and has a small dog acting as his hair piece. Spencer said the company had already looked at the idea and that it's not far off. Mike Ybarra, head of Windows and Xbox program management, gave everyone a peek Monday night, posting images of the new avatars -- one male and one female -- both sitting in wheelchairs.Microsoft's new avatars are part of an overall industry trend to create online characters that are more expansive and inclusive of the general population. Facebook recently added the ability to choose from among different skin tones for the emojis used on its Messenger chat app. There are now more emojis for women and for gender identity as well.The two new avatars are seated in wheelchairs that sport a flag with the familiar Xbox icon. The facial features are also more detailed and expressive than those seen in existing avatars. That suggests Microsoft's next lineup of avatars may look a bit more "human" than the present ones.Ybarra didn't reveal when the new avatars will debut. But Microsoft reportedly has big plans in store for the Xbox. Bryan Cranston has signed on with the Lionsgate "Power Rangers" reboot, the "Breaking Bad" actor said Tuesday on Twitter.Cranston joins the cast as Zordon, the disembodied holographic head in a tube that trains, leads and advises the group of teen superheroes. The rebooted Rangers themselves have a starkly different look, but there's no word yet on whether Cranston's Zordon will be a big departure from the classic TV show.We do know he'll be up against Elizabeth Banks who was previously cast as Rita Repulsa, the evil space witch and archnemesis of the Rangers. Apple might be pulling its support from the Republican National Convention, but it doesn't appear to be giving up on the GOP entirely. CEO Tim Cook will help raise money for House Speaker Paul Ryan next week, reported Politico. Tim Cook is reportedly hosting a fundraiser for Rep. Paul Ryan. Until now, dense and finely-featured objects had been considered off-limits, simply because the computer-aided design (CAD) files required would be enormous and take hours to compute. But new software designed by researchers at MIT's Media Lab circumvents this problem.Called Cilllia, it uses sliders to allow the users to create surfaces covered in thousands of hairs with a resolution of 50 microns, about the width of a human hair. Unlike CAD, where each hair has to be drawn individually, this process takes just a few minutes."[Hair] comes with a challenge that is not on the hardware, but on the software side," said first author Jifei Ou, an MIT graduate student in media arts and sciences, in a statement.Cilllia uses sliders that allow the user to quickly change the parameters of the hair structure, with a real-time visual representation. The user can adjust height, thickness, profile and angle, as well as the quantity of hair on a structure. The software can even be used to create curved hairs in a spiral patte.The result is a program that can be easily used to create brush structures in various forms using stereolithography 3D printing. The team made paintbrushes, Velcro-like pads that stick to each other, hair-based actuation, and a furred toy bunny that lights up green when you stroke it correctly.It's the latest advancement in 3D printing, an industry that will be worth just over $20 billion by 2019, according to Canalys."The ability to fabricate customized hair-like structures not only expands the library of 3D-printable shapes, but also enables us to design alteative actuator and sensors," the team's paper, presented at the Association for Computing Machinery's CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May, concluded. "We have not taken a position on the American election and nor do I expect us to," said the longtime Googler, speaking at Startup Grind in London on Wednesday.Google might be how much of the world gets its information about politics these days, but it is not immune to accusations of political bias. Schmidt has previously been described as a "kind of guru" to President Barack Obama's campaign manager, and Google employees were found to be the No. 2 donor to the Democratic National Committee at the last election. But Google has been careful to ensure the company itself does not openly affiliate itself with one political party.Trump is proving to be an incredibly divisive Republican candidate, to the extent that Buzzfeed tued away a $1.3 million advertising deal with the Republican National Convention. If Google was going to publicly align itself to the Democrats, or distance itself from the Republicans, now would probably be the moment. Thanks to Schmidt's declaration, we know it won't, but that doesn't mean that Clinton won't receive similar support as her predecessors from Google employees on an individual basis."We always had policy that the company does not have a policy in these areas," said Schmidt, alluding to Google's public-facing political non-partisanism. The first trailer was assailed by Kevin Smith, a director who's had his own share of hits and misses. And even one of the movie's stars, Melissa McCarthy, said it was confusing. In an atmosphere of such angst, who are you going to call? Why, that famed performer Kobe Bryant.The just-retired NBA star revealed on Thursday that he enjoys a cameo in an ad premiering on Thursday during the NBA finals. There he is, all suited up in Ghostbusters gear and ready to what? Flop, perhaps? (I mean "flop" in the basketball sense, of course.)Should you be surprised to see Bryant -- not the most popular NBA star ever -- in such a work of art, please don't be. He's already declared he has artistic pretensions. He's created a company to produce movies. And who could forget the way he announced his retirement with a poem? Yes, an ode to basketball. Surely his presence in this new "Ghostbusters" ad can only enhance the movie's potential. You will be able to see for yourself when it's released July 14 in Australia and July 15 in the US and UK. The film, a reboot of the '80s franchise, features an all-female crew of Ghostbusters and is directed by Paul Feig. I understand, however, that Bryant himself isn't in the movie. He's just a fan of the original.I fancy this will be the first step toward Bryant taking on leading roles in other remakes. Or at least in ads for other remakes. Michael Powell, a former FCC chairman and currently head of the cable industry's biggest lobbying group, is frustrated.NCTA President Michael Powell addresses the cable industry at the trade group's annual show. Cable companies have been "increasingly saddled with heavy rules without any compelling evidence of harm to consumers or competitors," Powell, president of National Cable & Telecommunications Association, said at an industry trade show last week. He pointed to proposals to ensure more competition in the cable set-top box business and to regulate privacy for Inteet service providers as evidence of "tectonic shifts that have crumbled decades of settled law and policy." For consumers, he says these regulatory policies will lead to higher costs as they are encouraged to buy set-top boxes no one wants. Meanwhile, the privacy rules leave out the biggest companies, like Google, Facebook and Amazon, that are already collecting and selling sensitive information about consumers online. Proponents of such rules argue that consumers will ultimately have more choice and lower prices. CNET sat down with Powell to talk about the issues facing the cable industry. He offered his candid views on the Federal Communications Commission's set-top box proposal and its plans to regulate Inteet privacy, as well as his thoughts on the presidential campaign. Below is an edited excerpt of that conversation.Q: You said the FCC launched an assault on the cable industry. Do you think the FCC is picking on cable companies? Powell: It's not that they're picking on us. But regulatory agencies set priorities. "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston is set to star in a 10-part sci-fi series, based on the stories of celebrated sci-fi visionary Philip K. Dick.The Oscar-nominated actor will also serve as executive producer on the series. UK broadcaster Channel 4 is partnering with Sony Pictures Television on the project, whose full title will be "Electric Dreams: The World of Philip K. Dick." Each episode will serve as a standalone story, adapting the short stories of Dick, who died in 1982 at age 53, having contributed such legendary sci-fi tales as "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" (which was adapted into 1982's iconic film "Blade Runner"), "The Man in the High Castle" and "A Scanner Darkly".Ronald D. Moore, who developed the rebo "Battlestar Galactica" series, will serve as writer and executive producer on the new programme. In a statement Moore said, "As a long-time fan of Philip K. Dick's work, it's a tremendous honour and thrill to be part of this series."His short stories are a treasure-trove of material for artists to draw from and I think this will be a very exciting project."Channel 4 told CNET that with production not yet started, there's no premiere date set for the new show.
