Who's the deadliest cybernetic villain in movies? Hint: Cartman would approve - CNET

SolarWinds Villains in sci-fi movies have an advantage over your regular Joe bad guy from off the tough streets of New York. Sci-fi baddies can be cybeetically enhanced, with robotic and other parts adding to their general menacing aura. Darth Vader was kind of a big jerk as Anakin Skywalker, but add in his imposing and life-sustaining black armor and he's a force to be fled from. And Agent Smith in "The Matrix" seemed like a meanie when we thought he was a human, but he jacked up the scary level once we saw him twisting and dodging bullets and realized what he really was. • Olympic cyclist 'live-tweets' his whole race - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageHe's a tweeter. He's a winner. Dan Craven; Twitter screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET I knew the headline was true, because it was on Twitter.More precisely, it was on the official Twitter Sports feed. It read, "Namibian#Olympics cyclist Tweeted through his entire race."Immediately, I pictured a heaving human with one hand on the handlebars and the other clutching his iPhone. Then I looked at the small print. Beneath Twitter Sports' headline that would no longer pass muster on Facebook was a clarification: "An Olympic cyclist 'live-tweeted' his entire race." (See those extra inverted commas?)The man in question was Namibian cyclist Dan Craven. His Twitter feed did, indeed, have many tweeted observations posted during his race. Some were even amusing. For example, "Now I'm craving a rusk. I'll give a pair of my socks to anyone who brings me a rusk at the finish." (A rusk is a South African/Namibian specialty, a hard dry biscuit that Craven loves -- and tries to avoid -- because of its carb and sugar content.)I did rather adore, "Cross wind. Bugger that. Drinks anyone? How about a caipirinha. #gutter."I was sure that this couldn't have been Craven himself tweeting. But then I espied: "I have magical powers. Front of the peloton. You forget my beard can tweet for itself."Craven does have a substantial growth. Could it be both substantial and versatile? Craven came clean. "My girlfriend Collyn Ahart is a genius. Her day job is marketing strategy. I came up with the idea last night but had no idea she would make such a splash," he told me. Her tweeting process, he said, was very simple. "She just started having fun and ended up having a blast," Craven told me. You, though, will wonder how his race went. I rushed to the results page for his men's road race. It read: "Dan Craven: DNF.", , olympic cyclist , olympic cyclist legs , olympic cyclist vs toaster , olympic cyclist quads , olympic cyclist zika , olympic cyclists 2016 , olympic cyclist robbed , olympic cyclist mugged , olympic cyclist stripped of medal , olympic cyclist robert , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Phone-lovers in the US will get a whole new mobile conference just for them - CNET

  • You don't have to know the name "Mobile World Congress" to appreciate what the annual blockbuster conference means for anyone who loves phones, tablets, smartphones, and really, anything that has to do with the wireless world. After all, it's at this trade show each February that Samsung typically unveils its flagship phone, like this year's Galaxy S7.Starting September 2017, a little more than a year from now, the US will get its own Mobile World Congress Americas, and that means more wireless products and news for you. This is the first time that the Mobile World Congress brand will make a big US splash, and it's happening because of a partnership between two organizations: GSMA, a European trade association that owns the Mobile World Congress event, and CTIA, a similar association that represents carriers in the US. Recently, the CTIA (which stands for Cellular Telephone Industries Association) has fallen on tougher times, with its annual fall Super Mobility Week show declining in popularity and impact. If everything goes to plan, this new show -- officially called GSMA Mobile World Congress Americas, In Partnership with CTIA -- will focus product launches and mobile news in a strong US market known for its startup innovations. The first joint conference kicks off September 12, 2017 in San Francisco.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Volkswagen's comeback tour stars 30 electric vehicles and a whole lot of batteries - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCar IndustryVolkswagen's comeback tour stars 30 electric vehicles and a whole lot of batteriesEnlarge ImageIf every electric VW resembled Budd-E here, I'd be okay with that. Antuan Goodwin/Roadshow To anyone who's been following the news since, oh, last September or so, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Volkswagen is not putting much future focus on its diesel vehicles. For the whole of 2016, the brand's increased its focus on electrification, and it has some ambitious plans for its vehicles.Volkswagen recently announced its "TOGETHER -- Strategy 2025" plan, a hippy-dippy-sounding name that encompasses VW's plans for the next 10 years. A big part of that plan involves battery-electric vehicles. In fact, the automaker believes it will launch "more than 30" EVs over the next decade. This, it hopes, will account for 20 to 25 percent of its total sales, totaling some 2 to 3 million vehicles sold. Ambitious.VW Group, which includes all of its brands, also plans to develop in-house and license an autonomous-vehicle system before 2020. It also hopes to streamline the development processes across its numerous brands, as well as expanding its reach in commercial truck and bus sales, which VW believes will be its most profitable unit in the future. • Bosch's Home Zone system takes self parking to a whole new level - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCar IndustryBosch's latest concept takes self parking to a whole new levelEnlarge ImageThe car is capable of going off its predetermined path, but only by a small amount, to navigate around obstacles. Bosch Self-parking systems like the one on the new BMW 7 Series or Tesla's own Summon technology are handy, but limited. You can't have a complicated entry or exit procedure, really only making the tech useful for tight spaces if you can pull straight into them. But one of Bosch's latest innovations does away with all that, although a bit of human effort is still required.Home Zone Park Assist is one of the technologies that the German company recently showed off, and it puts us that much closer to true autonomous parking. Using a smartphone app, a stereo camera and ultrasonic sensors, the system will navigate tricky, complex park jobs without the driver being in the car. The only catch is that the driver must first navigate the route manually, in order for the system to "lea" and repeat the route. The driver can be as much as 328 feet away from the car, so long as the smartphone is still connected to the vehicle via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Bosch claims this system will be on a vehicle in the next two or three years, although it declined to mention which model will carry it first.Bosch rolled out some other interesting systems recently. The company has developed a kind of pedestrian detection, a highly detailed surround-view camera system and low-speed reverse braking. Bosch is also working on an overhead clearance assist, which uses a stereo camera to determine if a vehicle carrying something on its roof will be able to clear upcoming obstacles. • Tesla's 75-kWh Model S battery isn't new, it's been here the whole time* - Roadshow

  • RoadshowSedansTesla's 75-kWh Model S battery isn't new, it's been here the whole time*It might seem duplicitous, but it's actually a smart business move. Tesla Cheesy romantic movies tend to have some variation of the line, "You've been looking for love all over the place, when I've been right in front of you this whole time." Now, Tesla could very well say the same thing, as it's been advertising Model S sedans with 70-kWh battery capacity, despite the cars possessing 75-kWh batteries. While Tesla only announced the 75-kWh battery option this week, the Verge reported and Tesla confirmed that it's been putting 75-kWh batteries into every refreshed Model S with a stated 70-kWh capacity. According to a Tesla spokesperson, the 70-kWh battery has been discontinued, but the Model S 70 trim will still be offered. This might seem like deception, but it's not. Removing the 70 trim entirely would raise the price of a base Model S by $3,000 (the cost of opening up the additional capacity), and not all buyers need that range or want to spend the additional coin. Using one battery with two distinct capacity levels saves the company money, as it only has to purchase one size of battery. At any point, the owner can open up the extra range with an over-the-air update.Note that this does not apply to Model S vehicles still rocking the original face. Those cars do, in fact, have 70-kWh batteries, so upgrading is out of the question. It should also be noted that, if you do upgrade to full battery capacity, Tesla will replace your badge the next time it's in for service. 2016 Model S refresh, in , ...ادامه مطلب

  • BBC and Netflix to traumatise whole new generation with new 'Watershed Down' - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageJohn Boyega goes from BB-8 to bunnies in "Watership Down". LAN/Corbis A whole generation of British kids was emotionally scarred by the 1978 animated film "Watership Down", and now the BBC and Netflix is planning a new version. In their biggest collaboration to date, the UK broadcaster and globally available streaming service will produce a big-budget four-part computer-animated series based on the 1972 children's novel by Richard Adams. The book tells the emotional and surprisingly brutal story of a group of rabbits searching for a new home. Nicholas Hoult from "Mad Max: Fury Road" and John Boyega, rocketed to fame by his role in "Star Star Episode VII: The Force Awakens" will voice the rabbits Fiver and Bigwig. "X-Men" star James McAvoy joins Ben Kingsley, Olivia Colman and Gemma Arterton in the cast. The series will delve deeper into the novel than the 1978 film adaptation, which as recently as last month was causing controversy among parents when it was screened on British television on Easter Sunday."Watership Down" is the latest inteational series backed by Netflix, which is producing big-name movies and locally-produced shows in the UK, Germany and France to appeal to a global audience.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Adam Sandler's second Netflix film looks a whole lot better than 'The Ridiculous 6' - CNET

  • [embedded content]Back in 2014, Netflix struck a deal with Adam Sandler to have the Billy Madison star produce and feature in four films. The first of those was "The Ridiculous 6," which has the dubious distinction of holding a zero percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.Above you can see the trailer for Sandler's follow up film, "The Do-Over" (waing, it's NSFW). In it, he'll be playing a supporting role to Joe Dirt himself, David Spade. It's hard for most people to get excited about a Sandler film in 2016, but it looks considerably better than "The Ridiculous 6." Then again, that's not saying much, because, you know, zero percent. Regardless of critical reception, the famed comic is big business for Netflix. The streaming service's chief content officer Ted Sarandos said at CES this year that "The Ridiculous 6" was "the most watched movie in the history of Netflix" in its first 30 days of availability. • When Amazon Payments meets high fashion, shopping gets a whole new look - CNET

  • In the immaculately appointed Club Room at the upper-crust Soho Grand Hotel in Manhattan, the luxury clothing e-retailer Moda Operandi was holding the first trunk show of its kind. There, amid the brown leather couches and low-lit Edison bulb chandeliers, the small boutique seller presented cotton wrap tops and ruffle trench coats from the brand Tome with a little help from Amazon, an online retail giant more often associated with diapers than high fashion. In new type of partnership for Amazon Payments, which lets people use their Amazon logins to make purchases on other websites, Moda will allow customers to pay in its stores (or trunk shows) without having to swipe a card or etch a signature. Instead, beacon devices will identify customers' smartphones right when they enter and can automatically log them in using their Amazon account information. Moda stylists armed with tablets can complete transactions for shoppers without customers ever having to reach for their purses."The check-in is the checkout," Kris Zanuldin, a technology manager for Amazon Payments, said Friday.Moda senior stylist Bouna Choe, center, shows off the new in-store feature with Amazon Payments sales executive Jung Lee at the Soho Grand Hotel. Ben Fox Rubin/CNET An added benefit to this service is that stylists are alerted to the customers coming in and can scan the items shoppers have favorited and placed in their carts online so they can make recommendations. For non-Amazon customers, Moda will continue to lean on the past, taking a credit card and swiping it at the back of the store. The partnership with Moda is a small one, but it could be the first of many for Amazon. Moda is a niche e-commerce player that sells clothes and shoes for hundreds or thousands of dollars. It plans to use this in-store payments feature at its only two invite-only boutiques in New York and London, as well as at trunk shows and fash, ...ادامه مطلب
