[embedded content] Twice a year, around the time of the autumnal and veal equinoxes, is the Solar Dynamics Observatory's eclipse season. From its vantage point in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, the SDO's view of the sun is blocked once a day by the Earth. And on the rare occasion, both the Earth and the moon pass between the SDO and the sun -- a rare double eclipse. One of these took place on September 1, when first the Earth, then the moon, were captured blocking out the sun as the SDO filmed the whole thing in hi-res. It's not quite as dramatic as a solar eclipse take from the Earth, but it's still interesting if you know what you'r...

NASA released a time-lapse video on Tuesday showing the Inteational Space Station orbiting over three separate hurricanes. They look both massive and frightening from the station's orbital vantage point. In order, the video shows twin hurricanes Lester and Madeline in the Pacific Ocean and then Gaston in the Atlantic Ocean. Both Lester and Madeline pose a potential threat to the Hawaiian Islands. Gaston is kicking across the Atlantic with wind speeds reaching 100 mph (about 160 kph). Les...

Look people, it is precisely five minutes from the end of my shift, and those tapas aren't going to eat themselves. You think curating the exhibits at the Barcelona Wax Museum is easy, I'd like to see you try it. There are only so many rooms with an outer-space backdrop, OK? Yeah, maybe that one droid, or alien, or whatever you call the thing with the heartlight, wasn't exactly a big part of this Star Trek or Star Wars or Star Bucks movie (except for this "Phantom Menace" thing) but the fairy-tale exhibit was full, I already told...

David McNew/Getty Images Mobility takes many forms. Sometimes, all you need is something capable of taking you a few miles, and a car's quite the expensive tool for that job alone. The Los Angeles Auto Show recognizes this, and as part of its effort to expand beyond just cars, it's creating floor space for all forms of personal mobility.Starting with this year's show in November, which kicks off with AutoMobility LA (formerly known as...

NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS About a week after NASA's Juno spacecraft entered orbit around Jupiter on July 4, the first images taken from the spacecraft's perch around the largest planet in the solar system have made their way back to Earth. On Sunday, six days after starting its orbit, Juno's visible light camera was tued on and the JunoCam captured the above scene, proving it survived its first pass through the planet's intense radiation. (We already heard the audio evidence that it made it into Jupiter's magnetosphere.) The view show...

NASA This Fourth of July, while the rest of America is busy eating hotdogs and lighting fireworks (hopefully at the same time), the dedicated scientists and engineers of NASA are once again putting in the long hours, this time to bring us never before seen pictures of Jupiter. But once NASA gets us there, it's up to us to take pictures of the action. After almost five years hurtling solo through space, the solar-powered Juno spacecraft is today set to enter Jupiter's orbit, before spending 20 months circling the gas giant. In this time...
