[embedded content] Twice a year, around the time of the autumnal and veal equinoxes, is the Solar Dynamics Observatory's eclipse season. From its vantage point in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, the SDO's view of the sun is blocked once a day by the Earth. And on the rare occasion, both the Earth and the moon pass between the SDO and the sun -- a rare double eclipse. One of these took place on September 1, when first the Earth, then the moon, were captured blocking out the sun as the SDO filmed the whole thing in hi-res. It's not quite as dramatic as a solar eclipse take from the Earth, but it's still interesting if you know what you'r...

[embedded content] Hurricanes are scary enough at ground level. View them from space and they look almost unreal, like special effects created in a movie studio. NASA released a time-lapse video on Tuesday showing the Inteational Space Station orbiting over three separate hurricanes. They look both massive and frightening from the station's orbital vantage point. In order, the video shows twin hurricanes Lester and Madeline in the Pacific Ocean and then Gaston in the Atlantic Ocean. Both Lester and Madeline pose a potential threat to the Hawaiian Islands. Gaston is kicking across the Atlantic with wind speeds reaching 100 mph (about 160 kph). Les...

View post on imgur.comEditor's note: An image of a display at the Barcelona Wax Museum has been circulating on social media this week -- and, well, you can see why. Look people, it is precisely five minutes from the end of my shift, and those tapas aren't going to eat themselves. You think curating the exhibits at the Barcelona Wax Museum is easy, I'd like to see you try it. There are only so many rooms with an outer-space backdrop, OK? Yeah, maybe that one droid, or alien, or whatever you call the thing with the heartlight, wasn't exactly a big part of this Star Trek or Star Wars or Star Bucks movie (except for this "Phantom Menace" thing) but the fairy-tale exhibit was full, I already told...

ALMA/NASA Twinkling stars seem like little more than individual pixels on the better-than-digital display that is the night sky. But when those distant suns die and send a supeova explosion tearing across the cosmos, the shock waves can sometimes be felt on Earth, new research has found. In April, researchers presented evidence of a pair of prehistoric supeovas that exploded around 300 light-years from us. A new follow-up study based on computer models finds the resulting blast of radiation in the form of cosmi...
