[embedded content] Twice a year, around the time of the autumnal and veal equinoxes, is the Solar Dynamics Observatory's eclipse season. From its vantage point in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, the SDO's view of the sun is blocked once a day by the Earth. And on the rare occasion, both the Earth and the moon pass between the SDO and the sun -- a rare double eclipse. One of these took place on September 1, when first the Earth, then the moon, were captured blocking out the sun as the SDO filmed the whole thing in hi-res. It's not quite as dramatic as a solar eclipse take from the Earth, but it's still interesting if you know what you'r...

Tim Cook (left), who had been the company's Chief Operating Officer since 2004, took over the top spot at the world's preeminent technology company. In the five years since his ascension to the CEO position, Cook has made a unique imprint on Apple, becoming a more vocal social activist than his legendary predecessor, and even directly taking on the US govement in a high-profile fight for digital privacy. In terms of Apple's products, however, Cook has largely taken a conservative approach, shepherding evolutionary changes to the existing product line (iPho...

Enlarge ImageFoundry workers built a tutable using melted steel from old bridges. Science Chael Believe it or not, you can fund your own DIY tutable for less than the cost of a trip to Whole Foods, and it only takes six steps to make it.It's so simple, in fact, the Science Chael recently built its own on an episode of the show "Made By Destruction." But instead of going the cheap route with plywood and batteries, the team sourced reclaimed steel from structurally faulty bridges to make the most metal record player ever. According to the clip posted below, there are more than 600,000 bridges in the United Stat...

[embedded content] There's probably no logical, scientific reason to drop bowling balls 150 feet off a tower on to an axe and watch them get sliced and diced like a Benihana lunch. But sometimes human beings just like to break things. Or maybe someone clumsy who'd dropped a bowling ball on their foot one too many times wanted revenge. You might even say they had an axe to grind. When the affable Aussie trick-shot crew from the That's Ridiculous YouTube chael decide to go for a 7-10 split, they mean it literally. So many things amaze me in this video. The guy who drops the bowling ball directly on the axe blade from 150 feet high on his first attem...

Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageNot exactly sticking to one particular lane. York Regional Police/YouTube screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET Is it over yet? I had rather assumed that the Pokemon Go phenomenon was rather abating. When politicians start making jokes about it, you know that the shark is begiing to duck. Police in Canada, however, say there are still some crazed enthusiasts. The York Regional Police posted a video to YouTube of a Mercedes driving somewhat erratically down a street last Monday. The footage is from a police h...

Enlarge ImageThe Apple Watch went on sale in April 2015. James Martin/CNET There could be new Apple Watch hardware around the coer, if a well-coected industry analyst is proved correct. KGI Security's Ming-Chi Kuo, who last year correctly predicted Apple would launch the iPhone SE, says there are two new Apple Watches coming in the second half of 2016, MacRumours reports. One model will apparently be an incremental upgrade to the current Watch, with a better processor and improved waterproofing. Getting a tattoo can mark an important life moment, quite literally. But one thing that always seems awkward is having to make small talk with the tattoo artist as a painful needle scratches a design into your skin. With the latest advancements in robotics, human tattoo artists could be replaced with a giant robot arm that won't judge you for getting a portrait on your back of Benedict Cumberbatch eating a taco. In the video "World's First Tattoo by Industrial Robot" on Vimeo, French designers Pierre Emm and Johan da Silveira, along with Autodesk engineer David Thomasson, explain how the project came to be. "Our research is really focused on this more intimate relationship th...

Video screenshot by Eric Mack/CNET Rocky loves to offer his greetings and salutations to humans who always seem thrilled to hear them and are ready with a reward. The orangutan lives at the Indianapolis Zoo and appears to be the first to be able to emulate human speech. Watch the video of Rocky below and it's clear from his monosyllabic greetings he's not going to be pontificating about the dangers of Pokemon Go anytime soon. But he is able to produce word-like sounds unlike typical Orangutan sounds in a conversational context. This is actually a big deal, because it means apes could have the ability to co...

If we've leaed anything from the 10,000 hydraulic press videos uploaded to YouTube this year, it's that people really like watching stuff getting smashed into oblivion. The original YouTube page already has over 1.3 million subscribers so it's not surprising that copycats are emerging with similar ideas, like this guy in Latvia that started a chael to show off the merciless mass of his 12-ton road roller. He uses the construction machine to crush everything from a Rubik's Cube to a chess set, but his most popular videos show him flattening electronic office supplies like a 42-inch television and, most recently, 17 LCD monitors of various brands and sizes. It's hard to describe the satisfying c...
