Users can also jazz up their photos with filters. Sound familiar? Facebook Facebook is basically Snapchat's little sister right now and wants to copy everything she does. The social-networking giant unveiled on Friday a tweak to its mobile app, a new main screen it's trying out in Canada and Brazil that looks a lot like Snapchat's home screen, according to BuzzFeed.The potential feature demonstrates just how much inspiration Facebook gets from Snapchat. On Tuesday, Facebook-owned Instagram added an element called Stories, which looks nearly identical to Snapchat Stories.The new home screen in the Facebook app opens up with a forward-facing live camera screen for still shots and videos. As in Snapchat, users can manipulate their images with filters and facial overlays, thanks to Facebook's March purchase of startup Masquerade.Facebook believes a focus on sharing photos and videos makes sense because written posts are becoming a thing of the past. Intel on Wednesday issued a recall of its Basis Peak fitness watch, urging owners to immediately discontinue use of the device out of conce overheating could cause bus.The company first shared its conces of overheating in June, pinning its hopes for a solution on a software update. That plan did not pan out as hoped, Intel said in a statement that urged customers to retu the devices immediately for a full refund. "We had hoped to update the software on your watch to address the problem," the company said in a statement. "Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we aren't able to develop such a solution without completely compromising the user experience. As a result, we are asking that you retu your Basis Peak watch and authorized accessories for a full refund at your earliest convenience."Intel bought Basis Science, maker of the Peak fitness watch, in 2014 for an undisclosed sum, although reports put the price tag at about $100 million.Intel said it has ended support for the Peak, adding that users will have until the end of the year to retrieve their data. Snapchat ups its game with new city-specific stickers. Oscar Gutierrez/CNET While you sip your nitro coffee out of a mason jar in a tiny San Francisco coffee shop, you can now snap a selfie and add a "hipster" sticker designed just for the city. The photo- and video-sharing app Snapchat on Tuesday launched Geostickers, allowing users to send city-specific stickers along with their snaps to friends. The new feature follows the trend of using geocentric elements in messaging, like the geo-filters Snapchat already provides. The stickers will first be available in 10 major cities, including San Francisco, New York City, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Paris and London. The news comes on the same day the Facebook-owned Instagram launched its Snapchat-esque "Stories" feature, which allows users to publish 24-hour reels of content to their feeds. Some of San Francisco's 15 stickers provide a satirical look at the city. One is of an angry sheep-looking creature yelling about rising rent, while another shows a plump walrus with a disapproving look beneath the caption "tech snob," according to TechCrunch. He is, however, having to go via the doghouse.As CBS Sports reports, Green took an intimate self-portrait of what is sometimes referred to as one's "manhood" and sent it to Snapchat's My Story.Should you have not availed yourself of this feature, Snapchat helpfully explains: "Adding a Snap to your Story allows Snapchatters to view your Snap an unlimited number of times for 24 hours (unless you delete it, of course!)."I feel fairly sure that Green didn't want Snapchatters to gawk at his nether regions across all regions of the world an unlimited number of times.His initial reaction was, however, a touch flaccid. He tued to Twitter and offered: "Hacked..... Can't win right now."The general reaction -- as when most celebrities claim to have been hacked after a technological faux pas -- was disbelief and a touch of jocular sco.And so it was that, as ESPN's Calvin Watkins reported on Twitter, Green came clean: "Draymond Green said he pushed the wrong button regarding an inappropriate picture on Snapchat. Photothek/Getty Images If you're a WhatsApp user with an iPhone, your chats might not be as secure as you think.Despite the popular messaging app's announcement earlier this year that it would encrypt all user data, a security researcher said Friday that the latest version of WhatsApp for Apple's iOS software for iPhones leaves some information vulnerable. The researcher, Jonathan Zdziarski, found traces of deleted chats, which can be pieced together into conversations, he said, and that's even if you've cleared or archived them.Zdziarski wrote in a blog post that such traces can linger "for months." And he also said it looks like the only way to truly shred the chats is to delete WhatsApp from your phone. Zdziarski added that Apple's iMessage software also suffers from the problem, something he wrote about in March.Neither Facebook-owned WhatsApp nor Apple immediately responded to a request for comment.The issue of privacy and encryption -- coding messages so they can be read only by the intended recipient -- came to the fore in 2013 after Edward Snowden leaked secret documents about the US National Security Agency's appetite for gathering people's digital data.It's since fueled spats between the tech industry and govements around the world. It's also a new iOS app designed for people who want to see Hillary Clinton as the next president.Launched on Sunday for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, the app is served up by the Hillary for America campaign. Hillary 2016 tests your knowledge about the pressing issues, offers daily challenges to help elect Clinton, shares news and information about the Democratic candidate and gives you the ability to set up your own virtual campaign headquarters.You can also compete against friends and fellow Hillary supporters to see who knows the most about Clinton, and recruit other friends to join in. The new app underscores the importance that personal technology plays in the campaign. Both Clinton and Trump have been using social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook extensively to reach prospective voters. You can follow the Republican convention in Cleveland this week old-school style via TV, radio or print outlets. For a little more color, there's the RNC memes trending on Twitter, unique Instagram insights and even "glogging." But one of the most interesting ways to tell the stories of the convention this week is via Snapchat, the ephemeral-messaging app. Cleveland.com flew four Snapchat celebrities into town for the RNC and invited them to snap away inside and outside the Quicken Loans Arena, where the convention is being held. Mark Kaye, Ali Spagnola, Audrey Spencer and wysamx (aka Stanley Odestin) all took tus taking over Cleveland.com's Snapchat account and putting their own spin on covering the convention.The results included Spagnola roaming around in "character" as Where's Waldo one day and as a bald eagle perching at various spots in the city another day. Kaye conducted interviews with other members of the media, while cat fanatic Spencer gave a behind-the-scenes take on the convention. And wysamx pulled delegates aside for a pop quiz that provided some interesting answers. Firefox maker Mozilla is clamping down harder on Flash. Adobe Systems Firefox parent Mozilla is taking its battle against Adobe Flash a few steps further. In 2017, Firefox will require "click-to-activate approval" from you before you can trigger Flash-enabled videos and other Flash content on a website, Mozilla engineering manager Benjamin Smedberg said Wednesday in a blog post. This means the Flash content will remain dormant unless you actively click on a link or icon that says: "Activate Adobe Flash." You can currently do the same thing yourself in Firefox by manually setting Flash to "Ask to activate." But next year's move will be dramatic due to the new default status for all Firefox users. Adobe Flash has long been a necessary feature that enables web developers to offer games, video and streaming media via web browsers. But the Flash plug-in, which gets installed in the browser, has been blasted for its constant security holes and performance problems. The industry has been gravitating toward HTML5 as a replacement for Flash, though the move has been a slow one. Firefox has advised web developers who use Flash as well as Microsoft Silverlight for video to make the switch to HTML5 as quickly as possible. Smedberg said that Firefox supports encrypted video playback using Adobe Primetime and Google Widevine as alteatives to plug-in based video formats such as Flash. Mozilla isn't waiting until next year to start reining in Flash. Starting next month, the company will block certain Flash content not considered essential to the "user experience." At the same time, it will continue to support legacy Flash content, meaning content that can't be viewed any other way. Mozilla expects this move to offer "enhanced security, improved battery life, faster page load and better browser responsiveness," Smedberg said.
