Amazon's Alexa might become your personal Einstein - CNET

  • Want a smarter Alexa, savvier Siri, brainier Google Now or a cleverer Cortana? So do Amazon, Apple, Alphabet and Microsoft -- and each is working to make its voice assistant your personal Einstein of choice. Amazon recently enhanced its efforts by nabbing an AI expert from eBay, The Wall Street Joual reported Friday. Hassan Sawaf is now Amazon's director of artificial intelligence, focusing on "the user experience for users of Amazon's search capability across all products and businesses," according to Sawaf's LinkedIn page. The Joual was one of the first to spot Sawaf's updated responsibilities on LinkedIn. "eBay has wide and deep capabilities in AI across the technology organization, and recently completed two acquisitions ... that contribute tech and talent to our AI and machine leaing/machine translation capabilities," an eBay spokeswoman said in an email.Amazon didn't respond to a request for comment.Alexa could eventually outsmart those rival voice assistants, and ultimat, amazon, amazon prime, amazon books, amazon smile, amazon video, amazon prime video, amazon echo, amazon fire stick, amazon music, amazon uk ...ادامه مطلب

  • Dramatic video shows full extent of SpaceX rocket explosion - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives. An intact Falcon 9. NASA/Getty Images It was just a routine rocket test. However, as the Space X Falcon 9 rocket stood on the launch pad with its Amos-6 satellite, there was an explosion.Video has now emerged of what that explosion looked like.Posted by nonprofit US Launch Report, the video shows a blast of considerable magnitude. A fire started immediately and the top part of the rocket fell to the ground. Then the fire continued the rage, as so many hopes were temporarily bued. As the video of the fire continues, smaller explosions are heard as the fire guts the whole structure. It's all a reminder of how difficult space is and how so much can go wrong so quickly. • Space station orbits over three hurricanes in epic time-lapse video - CNET

  • [embedded content] Hurricanes are scary enough at ground level. View them from space and they look almost unreal, like special effects created in a movie studio. NASA released a time-lapse video on Tuesday showing the Inteational Space Station orbiting over three separate hurricanes. They look both massive and frightening from the station's orbital vantage point. In order, the video shows twin hurricanes Lester and Madeline in the Pacific Ocean and then Gaston in the Atlantic Ocean. Both Lester and Madeline pose a potential threat to the Hawaiian Islands. Gaston is kicking across the Atlantic with wind speeds reaching 100 mph (about 160 kph). Lester is hitting 130 mph (210 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center, and Madeline is reaching 90 mph (150 kph).Astronauts on the space station often bear witness to dramatic Earth weather. • AmazonFresh customers: Beware of the $5 Snickers bar - CNET

  • In mid-June, Dave Jackson bought a Frito-Lay variety pack through AmazonFresh for $10.44. When he retued to the Amazon mobile app soon after, it coaxed him to purchase more of the snacks through its "Buy It Again" feature. But the very same variety pack under the "Buy It Again" banner didn't cost $10.44. It was $22.94. The same thing happened after buying Snickers bars for 89 cents apiece on AmazonFresh, Amazon's grocery delivery service. Yet again, Amazon invited him to buy more, but for $4.95 each, more than five times the previous price. What was happening? Jackson, a web administrator in San Jose, Califoia, believes he found a handful of bugs on Amazon after it recently combined the listings on its main website and on AmazonFresh. These potential bugs aren't just bothersome -- they could unnecessarily cost Fresh customers a lot more money if they don't pay close attention.Enlarge ImageHere are pictures of the same bottle of Diet Dr Pepper, with the same product identifica, ...ادامه مطلب

  • This 'Bad Lip Reading' video makes the DNC seem quite strange - CNET

  • [embedded content] If the US presidential race hasn't felt bizarre enough for you, the latest installment of the YouTube series "Bad Lip Reading" offers up unreal yet hilarious moments from the Democratic National Convention. In the video, published Friday, faux voice-overs of Hillary Clinton, Beie Sanders, President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton and more rev up the crowd with statements that were never actually made (we don't think). As with all the clips in the series, the video dubs the words as closely as possible to the speaker's mouth movements. Highlights include Chelsea Clinton giving gal-pal shout-outs, Hillary talking about manservants and Sanders ranting about Batman and Robin. The best quote, however, goes to Michelle Obama, who says, "There's only one person who I believe can drink koala venom and pass the Neverland, this is what you came for, this american life, this, this is what you came for lyrics, this is us,this is the end, this day in history, this old house, this is 40,this girl ...ادامه مطلب

  • 'Stranger Things' makes a great-looking 8-bit video game - CNET

  • The '80s creature-feature sensibilities of horror-adventure series "Stranger Things" have struck a chord with fans who love everything from kids classics "Goonies" and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" to terrifying movies like "Alien" and "Poltergeist." So it makes sense the Netflix show about kids searching for their friend lost in another, parallel world would become a perfect muse for fans wanting a retro-looking video game featuring characters from the show. Game artist Midio decided to do just that. On Monday, he tweeted an animated GIF of the the main characters Eleven, Mike, Lucas and Dustin looking for their friend Will where he disappeared into the creepy woods. Options in his game mock-up include hide, run, scream and fight when "your party senses a strange presence in the woods." This isn't the first pixelated-game fan art for "Stranger Things" making the rounds on the inteet. Last month, game designer Jacob Janerka tweeted animated GIFs of h, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Walmart scoops up Jet.com to better battle Amazon - CNET

  • Jet.com has landed at Walmart. Jet.com Walmart is hoping its acquisition of startup Jet.com takes its own online presence to new heights. The retail giant said Monday it has acquired Jet.com in a stock and cash deal worth $3 billion. The deal underscores the competitive nature of the online retail business, where Amazon dominates and Walmart, the largest brick-and-mortar retail in the US, plays second fiddle. Walmart is apparently expecting that Jet.com, which saw early hype as a possible "Amazon-killer," can even the playing field. "Walmart.com will grow faster, the seamless shopping experience we're pursuing will happen quicker, and we'll enable the Jet brand to be even more successful in a shorter period of time," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. "The combination of Walmart's retail expertise, purchasing scale, sourcing capabilities, distribution footprint, and digital assets -- together with the team, technology and business we have built here at Jet -- will allow us to deliver more value to customers," Jet.com CEO Marc Lore said in a statement.Walmart and Jet.com disclosed that the retail startup adds 400,000 new shoppers every month and processes an average of 25,000 orders each day. A bulk of the deal is in cash, with Walmart paying $300 million in stock over time. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • 'Watchmen' hilariously lambasted in Honest Trailers parody video - CNET

  • [embedded content] When beloved graphic novel "Watchmen" was reimagined as a movie directed by Zack Snyder, some irate fans, including "Watchmen" comics creator Alan Moore, criticized the movie's depiction of the troubled superheroes. Leave it to Honest Trailers -- a YouTube series from Screen Junkies that features a classic movie-trailer voice-over but with a narrator who makes fun of films -- to lay down some blunt opinions about the 2009 film. In a video posted Tuesday, Honest Trailers points out that the Watchmen may have looked pretty, but the movie tried way too hard to squeeze in every plotline from the comics. "Stare in awe as Snyder's gorgeous shots carry you through an overstuffed plot, where a dense 13-chapter series is crammed into a single movie full of so many story threads it feels like marathoning an entire season of 'Lost' -- at the same time," the Honest Trailers narrator says. Honest Trailers also offers a rather accurate description of the main anti-hero character, Rorschach. "Experience Jackie Earle Haley's spot-on performance as a smelly hobo who hates hands," the narrator says. This brutal review makes even more sense when you realize how often Snyder uses the same cinematic tropes in all of his movies, from "Watchmen" all the way to his most recent DC Comics film "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." After all, if Synder plans on always using rain, Jesus allegories, sex, graphic violence, destruction of a major city and apocalyptic dream sequences, Honest Trailers will be there to offer cutting commentary.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Blake Krikorian, Sling Media co-founder and streaming video pioneer, dies - CNET

  • Sling Blake Krikorian, the co-founder of Sling Media and a longtime fixture in Silicon Valley, died Wednesday at age 48.His brother, Jason confirmed Krikorian's sudden passing on Facebook. According to Recode's Kara Swisher, he was "apparently struck by a heart attack while surfing in the San Francisco area." Krikorian had recently served as the corporate vice president for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, following the acquisition of his company, id8 Group R2 Studios, by Redmond in 2013. But he was best known (to me and many others) as one of the visionary founders of Sling Media, which he co-founded with his brother Jason and Bhupen Shah. That company's Slingbox, first released in 2005, was the among the first handful of products to offer video "placeshifting" technology -- the ability to digitize the signal from your cable box and stream it to a PC or mobile device elsewhere in the home, or around the world. Brian Jaquet, who served as Sling's director of corporate communications, recounted how the Krikorian brothers' desire to watch their beloved San Francisco Giants while they were traveling was the big idea behind the box. "They just wanted to watch the games from the road, and couldn't believe there wasn't a way to do that," said Jaquet. Streaming video is now a ubiquitous service that has upended the entertainment industry as we know it. But Krikorian's hardware-based solution -- which did not require a monthly fee -- was arguably the major trailblazer in the field, offering live TV when and where you wanted it and besting corporate competitors like Sony's similar Location-Free TV. This was, after all, just a year after YouTube had launched, and two years before the first iPhone was released. Netflix was still mailing DVDs, its streaming service and the first Roku box still years away."That product, and the Sling company in general, laid the groundwork for ev, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Appliance Science: Alexa, how does Alexa work? The science of the Amazon Echo - CNET

  • There are plenty of things in my house that I yell at. Some of them answer back these days, though, and even do what I ask. My dog is still a work in progress as far as that goes, but my Amazon Echo has just about nailed it. The Echo is a device that uses speech recognition to perform an ever-growing range of tasks on command. Amazon calls the built-in brains of this device "Alexa," and she* is the thing that makes it work.Alexa is a smart cookie: if I say "Alexa, play some Pink Floyd", she will find some Floyd and start playing it over the built-in speaker of the Echo. If I say "Alexa, what's the weather?" she will calmly tell me that it is too damn hot in Boston. How does she do this? The answer is that Alexa is a bit of a cheat: take the Echo apart and you'll find little more than a few speakers, microphones and a small computer. That isn't enough to do all of the clever stuff that she can do. Her real smarts are on the Inteet, in the cloud-computing service run by Amazon. Colin McDonald/CNET The small computer in the Echo isn't completely dumb. It has enough built-in smarts to do a number of tasks, like playing back music and making lights blink. It can also recognize the Alexa name: when you say the word "Alexa", it recognizes the word (Amazon calls this the wake word) and starts recording your voice. When you have finished speaking, it sends this recording over the Inteet to Amazon. The service that processes this recording is called Alexa Voice Services (AVS). Run by Amazon, this converts the recording into commands that it interprets. It's more than a simple voice-to-text service: it is a fully programmable service that can work with other online services to do a surprising range of things. Once authorized by Amazon, anyone can use this service for free to build a home-made Echo: Amazon offers sample code for building one using a Raspberry Pi, a simple $30 computer. , ...ادامه مطلب
