Beats co-founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine did not conspire to defraud their former partner at Monster, a judge finds. Beats by Dre A judge has dismissed the heart of a lawsuit against Apple's Beats Electronics that claimed that the high-end-headphone maker's co-founders conspired to sever the headphone line from Monster before Apple bought the company in 2014 for $3.2 billion.The summary judgment issued late Monday by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William Fahey resolves the key charges that claimed Beats co-founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine duped former partner Noel Lee, founder of video and audio cable maker Monster. The lawsuit, which was filed in January 2015, had been scheduled to go to trial next week. A person, or people, using the alias "Guccifer 2.0" dumped the data on a website on Friday and said it had been acquired in a computer breach of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, a group that raises funds for Democratic members of the House of Representatives. That attack was revealed in late July. "It's time for new revelations now," read a statement accompanying Friday's data dump, as reported by The New York Times. Photothek/Getty Images If you're a WhatsApp user with an iPhone, your chats might not be as secure as you think.Despite the popular messaging app's announcement earlier this year that it would encrypt all user data, a security researcher said Friday that the latest version of WhatsApp for Apple's iOS software for iPhones leaves some information vulnerable. The researcher, Jonathan Zdziarski, found traces of deleted chats, which can be pieced together into conversations, he said, and that's even if you've cleared or archived them.Zdziarski wrote in a blog post that such traces can linger "for months." And he also said it looks like the only way to truly shred the chats is to delete WhatsApp from your phone. Zdziarski added that Apple's iMessage software also suffers from the problem, something he wrote about in March.Neither Facebook-owned WhatsApp nor Apple immediately responded to a request for comment.The issue of privacy and encryption -- coding messages so they can be read only by the intended recipient -- came to the fore in 2013 after Edward Snowden leaked secret documents about the US National Security Agency's appetite for gathering people's digital data.It's since fueled spats between the tech industry and govements around the world. One in particular involved an FBI demand that Apple help hack into the iPhone of a terrorist. Another involved Brazilian law enforcement's desire to have access to WhatsApp users' chats.Zdziarski said there's no need for WhatsApp users to panic about the deleted-chats issue but that they should be aware that law enforcement and others could potentially access supposedly trashed conversations. Silvia Scandar Mahan traveled to Philadelphia for her summer vacation. Now, she's putting in more hours than she does at Cor, her San Francisco digital media startup. From 9:30 a.m. until after midnight, the 33-year-old is producing video that tells the stories of delegates to the Democratic National Convention. During the day, she and another volunteer record caucus meetings and political events. In the afteoon, they shoot more video of the delegates and congressional leaders at the Wells Fargo Center, where the convention is being held. Then they edit the recordings into short snippets -- less than a minute long -- for sharing on the convention committee's social media accounts, websites and YouTube. "It's exciting to be here and be a part of this," said Mahan, who volunteered for Jeb Bush's gubeatorial race in Florida as a college student. "It doesn't really feel like a vacation."Gone are the days of campaigns getting by on volunteers distributing leaflets or cold-calling voters. Just like the broader economy, political campaigns need volunteers with highly specialized skills, including video production and social media savvy. The DNC has recruited more than 120 people, many with social media, video and other digital skills, to work in Philadelphia, where the Democrats became the first major US political party to nominate a woman for the presidency.
