  • How will driverless cars make life or death choices? Google exec admits he doesn't know - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageWhere on the dashboard is its moral compass? KAREN BLEIER/AFP/GettyImages I think of morality as a feather that shifts in the wind and occasionally brushes your face delightfully as it falls to earth.I'm still perturbed, however, whether technology has a fine grasp of it. Or whether it can.I'm moved by the news that Uber has launched its driverless vehicles in Pittsburgh. It crossed my mind whether these cars have already been programmed whom to kill if they face a moral dilemma. For example, the car is about to hit another car with three people inside. It can swerve out of the way, but then it'll hit three children standing on the sidewalk. How does it make the choice? • The giant blue screen of death comes for us all - CNET

  • [embedded content]Ask not for whom the giant blue screen of death tolls, it tolls for thee. This all-too-nightmare-inducing photo was taken in Pattaya, Thailand, at the CentralFestival Pattaya Beach shopping mall, and shared on Facebook by Blake Sibbitt. Apparently, a problem has been detected, and the mall will be shut down. Or, you know, at least the outdoor signage. But forget reality, it's more fun to picture this five-story version of the infamous Windows system-crash screen as something out of a future "Terminator" movie, when Skynet has taken us over and is about to take the planet down for good. Or maybe out of a "Black Mirror" episode, where a skyscraper's crash is preceded by a skyscraper system crash. • What do we say to the god of death? Bring Syrio back to 'Game of Thrones' - CNET

  • Some fans are still holding out hope that Syrio (Miltos Yerolemou) will retu to "Game of Thrones." HBO The "Game of Thrones" season finale satisfied many fans by apparently confirming the Jon Snow parenting theory (R+L=J). That's nice and all, but the show ignored completely my favorite hope -- that Arya's sword-fighting teacher, the brave and eteally quotable Syrio Forel, somehow still lives.OK, he probably doesn't. When last we saw him, he was battling Meryn Trant with nothing but a broken wooden sword. And although sharp-eyed fans hoped this curly-headed shape seen in a recent episode was Syrio, the show ended season 6 with absolutely no sign of him. Probably somewhere an extra with a perm is freeze-framing his one big scene and bragging to his friends about all the confusion he caused. But HBO, if you're listening, you'd have no trouble casting a retu. Greek actor Miltos Yerolemou told Digital Spy that he and his wooden sword would be on the next dragon to Westeros if asked to come back."Of course I would want to retu to 'Game of Thrones,'" Yerolemou said. "People always ask me, 'Did (Syrio) really die?' and the thing is you don't know."Like viewers, Yerolemou is in the dark about whether Syrio met up with the god of death, or if the First Sword of Braavos told him, "Not today.""I don't actually know [whether Syrio died or not] but even if I did, I wouldn't tell you!" he said in the interview published Monday. "And that's part of the fun of it -- you never know."Syrio isn't the only "Game of Thrones' character who's pulled a Chuck Cunningham. ("Happy Days" fans will remember Richie, played by Ron Howard, once had an older brother on that 1970s sitcom. Chuck one day went upstairs with a basketball and was written off the show.)Arya's pal Gendry is also AWOL from the plot. The illegitimate son of Robert Baratheon was last seen rowing away from Dragonstone, and hasn't been heard from, ...ادامه مطلب

  • In matters of life and death, how should Facebook decide what you see? - CNET

  • This week brought horrifying realities to life in your newsfeed. Wednesday evening, when Philando Castile was fatally shot by a Minnesota police officer during a traffic stop, girlfriend Diamond Reynolds streamed the aftermath on Facebook Live, the network's live-broadcasting product launched widely this year. The 10-minute video put the viewer inside the car with Castile, Reynolds and her four-year-old daughter, witnessing the bloodied Castile slump over in his seat, watching his breathing slow, and hearing the young girl assuage her handcuffed mother's distress after she vented a scream in the back of a police cruiser. A Facebook Live broadcast captured a scene of deadly violence again one day later, when Michael Kevin Bautista streamed cops crouching while snipers fired on officers at a Dallas demonstration against police violence. After an officer fatally shot her boyfriend, Philando Castile, during a traffic stop, Diamond Reynolds live streamed the aftermath on Facebook. The video, which included graphic images of Castile bleeding, has spurred an outcry online. STF/AFP/Getty Images The latest in a string of videos depicting violence involving black Americans and police, both the Castile and Dallas footage initially streamed unedited and uncensored. The Castile video temporarily disappeared because of "technical glitch," according to Facebook, before it was restored with a waing about its graphic nature. Bautista's video was viewed at least 3 million times over the course of at least 10 hours before the same waing was added, which prevents clips from autoplaying and requires viewers opt in to watch. Facebook's treatment of the broadcasts highlights the dilemma it faces as it morphs from passive technological platform to unwitting news publisher. The biggest social network in the world, Facebook is a key agent of news to the 1.1 billion people who tu to it, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Death Star toaster: 'Luke, I am your breakfast' - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageUse the toaster, Luke. The Fowndry The Death Star toaster is a curious thing. It's obviously modeled after Darth Vader's deadly ride, but its form is restricted by the requirements of being a toaster, so it's a truncated version of the usual Death Star sphere. No matter. Your Star Wars fandom allows some leeway when it comes to product design. What's important here is that you will wake up in the moing, stumble groggily into the kitchen, flip the switch on your coffee maker, catch sight of your planet-destroying toaster and start merrily humming the Imperial March. The toaster sears the classic Star Wars logo onto every piece of bread. It's officially licensed and can handle two pieces of toast at a time. It has reheat, defrost and quick-stop functions. That defrost feature should come in handy when you need to thaw the occasional wampa arm. There's also a removable crumb tray to make Death Star maintenance easy. • At last, the gross 'Game of Thrones' death we've been waiting for - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageSansa Stark has been through a lot. HBO Caution: so many spoilers ahead.Until Sunday night's "Battle of the Bastards" episode of "Game of Thrones," whiny boy-king Joffrey Baratheon's blubbering death by poison was the most satisfying departure on the series. Then someone let the dogs out. Monday, the social-media world seems downright celebratory about the timely death of Ramsay Bolton. The main story arc follows Stark bastard Jon Snow as his army faces off against bastard Ramsay Bolton and his icky flayed-man banners in a fight to regain the Stark home of Winterfell. You can nearly smell the stench of bodies, fear and blood during the tense battle scenes. But what we were really waiting for was the ultimate answer as to which bastard survives: Snow or Bolton. It wasn't surprising Bolton ends up dead, but the way his passing is delivered is one of the most stomach-tuing and visceral moments ever delivered by a show that already revels in beheadings and blood spurts. It's not Jon Snow who ultimately presides over his exit. It's Snow's sister Sansa Stark, the woman who was wed to Bolton and horrifyingly mistreated by him. Twitter users are especially vocal about the satisfaction they feel after Ramsay's face was graphically chewed off by his own hungry dogs as Sansa Stark watched. You see phrases like "nice," "poetic justice," "won't be missed" and "most satisfying scene ever." What is it about a television character getting chewed on by large dogs that makes so many people so happy? Here's a quick reminder as to why Ramsay Bolton was the most hated man in Westeros: He raped Sansa. He stabbed his father. He murdered his half-brother. He castrated Theon Greyjoy. He killed yo, ...ادامه مطلب

Earth EB-2, May 22, 2051 A thick haze hung to the north as Rebecca Danish stepped out of the front entrance of the Okhla Railway Station and looked back toward the sun setting behind New Delhi, lighting the hazy horizon on fire. She felt the bu of fatigue throughout her body as she steeled herself to work her way through a growing crowd at the intersection below. Just beyond the low buildings that surrounded the train station she could see the temple's massive lotus petals beckoning to her, offering serenity if she could only make it a few more blocks on her weakened legs. It had been almost a month since the always reliable Mrs. Danish had walked out on her instructorship without any notice. There were rumors almost immediately that she had joined the underground of radical Uninstallers suspected of planning a coup against the ruling Transhumanist Party, but ironically she was scarcely aware that such a movement existed when she had decided to walk away from her career. She simply knew that somewhere in her body she felt tired. Even if her nanobiotics insisted otherwise, constantly ensuring that all her cells were functioning at top performance levels and preventing her from actually feeling that old sensation she once knew to be just plain tired, she still knew she was tired...on some sort of existential level. The metropolis of the future as envisioned by "Crowd Control" contributor Julia Zimmerman. • 'Game of Thrones' Clue is now a real board game full of death - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageLet's blame Joffrey anyway. USAopoly Last year, geeky retailer ThinkGeek rolled out its annual roundup of April Fools' fake products, including a super-size version of the classic mystery board game Clue done up "Game of Thrones"-style. ThinkGeek has since taken down its faux product page and removed its video parody, but that's OK. USAopoly, the same company that brings us themed versions of Monopoly, now offers a real "Game of Thrones" Clue. The ThinkGeek version included a massive board with 48 weapons and 48 player pieces featuring all the popular characters from the hit HBO show and then some. The real version of the game is much more in line with a traditional Clue arrangement. The 12 suspects for Clue are Cersei, Jaime, Tyrion, Sansa, Petyr Baelish, Margaery Tyrell, Daenerys, Hizdahr zo Loraq, Missandei, Daario Naharis, Jorah Mormont and Grey Worm. It's too bad whiny boy king Joffrey isn't included. We're also pretty short on members of the Stark family. The metal weapons include a poison vial, battle ax, crossbow and a Faceless Man (cool!). As you can tell by the cast list, the two settings are the Red Keep in King's Landing and Meereen in Slaver's Bay. The double-sided board is decorated with dragons and specific locations from "Game of Thrones," including the Fighting Pit of Daznak, the Pyramid of the Great Masters, Qybu's laboratory and King Tommen's bedchamber."Game of Thrones" Clue is only available in the US and Canada, where it sells for $50 through the HBO online store or at local retailers. The game works for up to six players and follows the usual Clue mechanics of moving through rooms while uncovering hints as to the identity of a murderer. What "Thrones" fans can really look forward to is shouting out, "It was Cersei Lannister in the Dragon Catacombs with the Faceless Man!"Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

Discussions in classes were more easily derailed by questions about the future of interversal trade and immigration asked by students who just weeks earlier were more likely to be drooling or snoring through sessions that were largely remedial, a last chance to catch up. "I don't understand why we can't just offer more positions to the subs," Zulema shouted in frustration during one class, surprising her fellow students with her use of a derogatory term for migrants. "Yea, we need help now," echoed Nara. "Everything is broken at my place since our help got poached to work at some resort out in Oaxaca. Versatile maintenance bots cost a fortune, otherwise my family would have already ordered one. I'm stuck trying to figure out how to get coffee without any kind of functioning fabrication system. You want to hear something crazy? Did you know that stuff comes from beans?" "Nara, you are so clueless." Meta slapped his friend on the back from across the aisle. Trainer Cortes interrupted. "Can we redirect this little aside, please, candidates? • Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg delivers powerful words on husband's death - CNET

  • [embedded content]In an emotional speech Saturday, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg opened up publicly for the first time about the sudden death of her husband."For many months...I was swallowed in the deep fog of grief...an emptiness that fills your heart and your lungs, constricts your ability to think, or even to breathe," Sandberg, 46, said during her commencement address at the University of Califoia, Berkeley, several miles north of Silicon Valley and the Facebook campus."I leaed about the depths of sadness and the brutality of loss, but I also leaed that when life sucks you under, you can kick against the bottom, find the surface, and breathe again."Sandberg's husband, Yahoo veteran and SurveyMonkey CEO David Goldberg, died at 47 of a cardiac arrhythmia a little more than a year ago, while the couple was vacationing in Mexico. And Sandberg, often fighting back tears, made her climb out of grief the centerpiece of her speech.Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg takes a moment to collect herself while discussing her grief at the loss of her husband. Screenshot by CNET She counseled the new graduates to be resilient and to be wary of three common reactions people have when misfortune strikes. Don't automatically blame yourself, she said: "Not everything that happens to us happens because of us." Don't let a crisis in one part of your life blind you to the good things that still exist around you. And don't make the mistake of thinking that your sorrow will last forever."In the face of the void or in the face of any challenge, you can choose joy and meaning," Sandberg said. "You will be defined not just by what you achieve but by how you survive."Despite the intensity of parts of her talk, Sandberg made room for levity. At one point she spoke of some of the disappointments the graduates might soon face. "You applied for an inteship at Facebook, but you only got one at Google," she quipped, the, ...ادامه مطلب

She reportedly was using the app at the time of her death.Periscope is primarily used for streaming and watching live broadcasts, but videos can be saved for later viewing. The content was removed from Periscope, a Twitter spokesman said, adding that the company does not comment on "individual accounts." Local prosecutor Eric Lallement told the New York Times that investigators are trying to retrieve the video. The woman's family described her to investigators as being psychologically fragile. • Prince's death highlights fine line between sympathy and advertising - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageMaker's Mark replaced its signature red wax with purple in honor of Prince, but considering the singer never drank, was this insulting to his memory? Maker's Mark When news spread Thursday that Prince had died, everyone from Oprah to the president of the United States posted their love for the legendary pop music icon on social media. Then something weird started to happen. Cereal, liquor and office supply companies took to social media to say how sad they were about Prince's passing -- by using their products as the means of communicating sorrow. When Cheerios posted a purple graphic with the text Rest in peace (with a single Cheerio dotting the "i"), Prince fans were outraged the company would inject its brand into their condolences. Cheerios later deleted the tweet. "As a Minnesota brand, Cheerios wanted to acknowledge the loss of a musical legend in our hometown," General Mills said in a statement. "But we quickly decided that we didn't want the tweet to be misinterpreted, and removed it out of respect for Prince and those mouing." Cheerios wasn't the only Minnesota-based company that used its brand to say farewell to the rock star. Office supply company 3M (famous for Post-It notes and tape) tweeted a tribute -- its logo in purple with a white teardrop in the middle. Companies outside of Minnesota got in on the product placement too. Maker's Mark posted an image of its signature red bottle tops as purple in Prince's honor. Ironically, Prince never drank liquor, and a fan quickly alerted the company to that fact with the response, "You know Prince was strongly against consuming alcohol, right?" Another irked fan added, "Prince didn't drink. Plus, you're trying to profit from his death. Epic fail." The tweet remains on Maker Mark's Twitter feed. 3M's tribute to Prince feels more like an advertisement than an homage. , ...ادامه مطلب
