The "Game of Thrones" season finale satisfied many fans by apparently confirming the Jon Snow parenting theory (R+L=J). That's nice and all, but the show ignored completely my favorite hope -- that Arya's sword-fighting teacher, the brave and eteally quotable Syrio Forel, somehow still lives.
OK, he probably doesn't. When last we saw him, he was battling Meryn Trant with nothing but a broken wooden sword. And although sharp-eyed fans hoped this curly-headed shape seen in a recent episode was Syrio, the show ended season 6 with absolutely no sign of him. Probably somewhere an extra with a perm is freeze-framing his one big scene and bragging to his friends about all the confusion he caused.
But HBO, if you're listening, you'd have no trouble casting a retu. Greek actor Miltos Yerolemou told Digital Spy that he and his wooden sword would be on the next dragon to Westeros if asked to come back.
"Of course I would want to retu to 'Game of Thrones,'" Yerolemou said. "People always ask me, 'Did (Syrio) really die?' and the thing is you don't know."
Like viewers, Yerolemou is in the dark about whether Syrio met up with the god of death, or if the First Sword of Braavos told him, "Not today."
"I don't actually know [whether Syrio died or not] but even if I did, I wouldn't tell you!" he said in the interview published Monday. "And that's part of the fun of it -- you never know."
Syrio isn't the only "Game of Thrones' character who's pulled a Chuck Cunningham. ("Happy Days" fans will remember Richie, played by Ron Howard, once had an older brother on that 1970s sitcom. Chuck one day went upstairs with a basketball and was written off the show.)
Arya's pal Gendry is also AWOL from the plot. The illegitimate son of Robert Baratheon was last seen rowing away from Dragonstone, and hasn't been heard from since. (Not an uncommon fate in this show.)
