Greece's refugee crisis through a different lens - CNET

  • This is part of our Road Trip 2016 summer series "Life, Disrupted," about how technology is helping with the global refugee crisis -- if at all.The main street in Mytilene, on the Greek island of Lesvos, wraps around the green-tinted Aegean like a horseshoe. Brightly painted buildings line the road while wooden sailboats bob near the pier. It's beautiful. It's also where I bump into Waleed, a young boy I'd met earlier that day at the gate of the Kara Tepe refugee camp just outside town.He was fishing with two other migrants.I ask where his mom is. He points back toward the camp. "Kara Tepe," he tells me.And his father?"Dad. Syria. Psh, Psh," he says, pointing a finger to his head while imitating the sound of gunfire.I say, "I'm sorry," but he shrugs it off. That's life in Syria, where he came from. It was another reminder of the pain refugees have faced both at home and in Greece, where they fled to safety. The pain often sits just under the surface, bubbling up after they talk about th,greece, greece map, greece flag, greece news, greece currency, greece islands, greece ridge mall, greece vacations, greece beaches, greece economy ...ادامه مطلب

  • Scenes from Greece's refugee crisis: Tales of tech - CNET

  • Most people think of Greece as a great place to escape from the stress of everyday life. But not to the more than 57,000 people now trapped there. In 2015, thousands of refugees and migrants fled war and chaos in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq and headed to Europe seeking shelter. A year later, many are living in squalid camps and abandoned buildings in Greece, waiting for asylum or a chance at legal residence in the European Union. During a 10-day trip in June, we talked to officials, migrants and activists in Athens, Lesvos -- the Greek island where most refugees first set foot in Europe last year -- and Thessaloniki, near the closed border of Macedonia, shutting migrants' way out. Our mission: to see if the technology that many of us use every day -- phones, the inteet, messaging apps, social networks -- is helping during this crisis. Or not. We met people from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Morocco and Somalia, all on a jouey they hoped would take them to safer and better lives. Everyone (except the children) has a phone. All rely on the inteet to lea what's new and important. Facebook is a tool for escape and escapism. Power strips are the new watercoolers. Here are a few stories of their stories.Google it Five men sit around a battered, wooden patio table just outside the gate at Kara Tepe, an official refugee camp on Lesvos. All have their phones plugged into two power strips on top of the table. Smoke wafts from their cigarettes. Beko Al-Falahi, a 28-year-old from Iraq, tells us he used to work as a US Army translator. He's wearing a camo hat, flip-flops and a shirt that reads, "Grace isn't a little prayer you say before receiving a meal. It's a way of life."In April, Pope Francis visited migrant detention centers on the Greek island of Lesvos. Beko Al-Falahi shows a photo of the Pope holding his son Tayim. • Apple Watch gets 14 flag-inspired Olympic bands - CNET

  • The US is one of 14 countries to get its own Olympic watch strap. Apple Apple has cooked up a new way for you to show your support your national team at the upcoming Olympic games in Rio by creating dedicated Apple Watch bands inspired by a selection of flags. But there's a catch -- they're only available in Brazil.Set to go on sale at the Apple Store at VillageMall in Barra da Tijuca in August for $49 (329BRL), the straps are designed to represent the flags of 14 major competitors in the games. Both the US and the UK get their own straps, as well as the Netherlands, South Africa, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan, Jamaica, Canada, China, Australia, Germany, France and Brazil. Most people will have to wait for theirs, but it looks like Team USA sprinter Trayvon Bromell has already got his. Athlete perks, most likely. Ever since Apple introduced its tech-first timepiece last year, personalisation has been high on its list of priorities. It also helped the company set itself apart from other players in the field, most of which only offered minimal options for customisation. Earlier this month the company also released a special rainbow strap to employees celebrating Pride. The reaction online saw demand for the straps beyond the small group that received them however, just as the new Olympic straps will likely be hankered after by Apple Watch users outside of Brazil.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Snag a limited edition ColorWare MacBook camouflaged to look like an old Apple IIe (while supplies last) - CNET

  • Serious vintage vibes on this custom MacBook series by Colorware ColorWare Colorware, the company with a history of tricking out popular electronics in custom colors and pattes, has gone back in time and brought back the design of the Apple IIe, at least in spirit. The company is offering a limited edition 12" Macbook with a custom skin that pays homage to the 1980s retro computer console. The basis for the Apple MacBook Retro is the high-end 2016 model Macbook tricked out with a 1.3GHz dual-core Intel Core m7 chip, 8GB of SDRAM, and 512GB of flash storage. But instead of the standard Silver, Space Gray, and Rose Gold options, ColorWare opens a big bucket of nostalgia and dips the whole thing in putty-colored paint. It even has the familiar side vents that guided airflow in and out of the original IIe, although their function is purely cosmetic here. Finally, no retro Apple conversion would be complete without the illuminated rainbow logo on the front. Now for the hard part. ColorWare only made ten of these MacBook Retros and the cost to own one is a healthy $2,999 (about £2,067 in the UK and $4,010 in Australia) -- just to give you perspective, with that amount you can also buy the top of the line 15" MacBook Pro or just get two of the laptop configurations that Dan Ackerman used in his CNET review. • Race Report: We take the checkered flag and a special trophy - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCar CultureRace Report: We take the checkered flag and a special trophy I am a buggy dork. In fact, I love air-cooled Volkswagens so much I race one in desert endurance races in Califoia and Nevada. My car, 1617, runs a 1600cc engine and has a stock VW beam front end. The transmission is a 4-speed manual out of a VW bus and we run 3.0 bypass Fox Shox on all four coers. Stopping power is provided by Jamar disc brakes and when we need illumination we have an LED light bar by Sierra LED Lights. The car makes less than 90 horsepower and even less torque, and I love it with all my heart and soul. This past weekend we had a, let's say, "eventful" time at the Mojave Off-Road Enthusiasts McKenzie's 250 race in Lucee Valley, Califoia.Yes sir, that's my baby. RnR Photos The trouble started a few days before the race. I was down 15 gallons of race fuel and my regular supplier would not be out at the race. I was on my own to find 113 octane fuel for my 2-seat 1600cc buggy to get me through the rough and tumble 250-mile course. Fortunately a fellow competitor, Meehan Motorsports, had 11 extra gallons that I could buy. My car gets 9 miles per gallon, and with the fuel I already had the math worked out, but we would just be eking by.A smoother section of the race course. Kaylee Guildford In off-road racing, all classes share the same track, but they don't all do the same amount of laps. Class 1600 is the slowest of the fast cars, so we were required to do six 40-mile laps. We were sharing the course with 800 horsepower trophy trucks, class 10 cars running 2-liter ecotec engines, and even a UTV or two. I drove the first three laps had a few issues. I blew a coer in a sandy wash and ended up stuck on the berm. It took careful throttle control and a bit of back and forth to get 1617 off the berm and, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Police camouflage surveillance truck as Google Maps van - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageIts intentions seem clear. Except they're not. Matt Blaze/Twitter screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET I bring good news.If you live in Philadelphia and you're conceed that Google's Street View vans are spying on you, relax. It might merely be your friendly local police instead.I deduce this after Matt Blaze, a University of Pennsylvania assistant professor of computer and information science, tweeted a photograph of a van that had a Pennsylvania Police Department placard and a Google Maps logo on its window. As Motherboard reports, he espied it near the Philadelphia Convention Center. It was equipped with two sophisticated license-plate readers on its roof. Why, though, would the police wish to pretend -- and so obviously -- that one of its surveillance vehicles was actually just mapping the roads for Google?Neither the Philadelphia Police Department nor Google responded to requests for comment. But the police department did issue this statement to Motherboard: "We have been informed that this unmarked vehicle belongs to the police department. However, the placing of any particular decal on the vehicle was not approved through any chain of command. With that being said, once this was brought to our attention, it was ordered that the decals be removed immediately."The department added that it is investigating what might have happened. Police spokesman Lt. John Stanford told NBC Philadelphia that his officers were "being creative." Is that as in "creative with the truth"?What of Google, though? One might imagine it would be outraged that its auspices had been co-opted by the police. The ELSAG MPH-900 equipment mounted on the truck is highly efficient and can capture many license plates simultaneously. That's not the sort of thing Google would wish to be involved in, surely. There agai, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Definitive Technology's flagship 9000 speakers include innovative Atmos dock - CNET

  • Definitive Technology has unveiled a full line of flagship speakers which are designed to cope with the latest "object-based" soundtracks for home theater. The new collection consists of four floorstanders which include the BP9020 ($1300/pair), BP9040 ($1800/pair), BP9060 ($2200/pair) and flagship BP9080X ($3500/pair).The docking port for the optional A90 module Definitive Technology While the BP9080X includes an integrated height module for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X effects, the other three speakers include a port for the optional A90 attachment ($499/pair). The proprietary connector for the A90 is hidden under a machined aluminum plate on each floorstander, and the module's boundaries are designed to sit flush with all of the compatible speakers. The DefTech 9000 series includes the flagship BP9080X (right) which features an integrated Atmos module Ty Pendlebury/CNET All of the speakers feature aluminum tweeters in a bipole configuration -- front and rear -- in addition to midrange drivers (between 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch depending on the model), and powered subwoofers. Yes, in addition to speaker wires you will need to plug the 9000 series into the wall. The range also includes three center channel speakers -- the CS9040 ($499), CS9060 ($699) and CS9080 ($999) and two sets of surround speakers the SR9040 ($500/pair)and SR9080 ($700/pair).We were treated to a demo of the BP9040 series in a stereo configuration featuring a male voice and guitar. Given the bipolar nature of the speakers -- and that the rear-firing driver faced a window -- the stereo image was remarkably good. The vocal sounded intimate and the fingerpicking of the strings precise. While we would want to test these for myself it made me think twice about "bipolar" and its supposed sweet-spot benefits, in a good way.In a second demo we were tre, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Zebra stripes as camouflage? Not so fast, Mr. Hyena - CNET

  • Enlarge ImageThese zebras certainly stand out. Tim Caro/UC Davis Many wild animals have developed special camouflage characteristics to blend in with their surroundings. Rattlesnakes look like pebbly soil. Owls become one with the tree branches on which they perch. Zebra stripes meld with tall grasses and trees. Oh wait. We may need to scratch that last one from the list. A new study suggests zebra stripes aren't about camouflage at all. The study looks at zebra stripes from the perspective of predators as well as fellow zebras. "The most longstanding hypothesis for zebra striping is crypsis, or camouflaging, but until now the question has always been framed through human eyes," says lead author Amanda Melin from the University of Calgary. The researchers calculated the distances at which lions and spotted hyenas can see zebra stripes under various light conditions. "At the point at which predators can see zebras stripes, they probably already have heard or smelled their zebra prey," notes UC Davis in a release on the findings. "The results from this new study provide no support at all for the idea that the zebra's stripes provide some type of anti-predator camouflaging effect," says Tim Caro, professor of wildlife biology at UC Davis and co-author of the study. The study, titled "Zebra Stripes through the Eyes of Their Predators, Zebras, and Humans," was published in the PLOS One joual on January 22. There have been many theories of why zebras have stripes. Camouflage has been a popular concept, but some researchers have suggested the stripes help zebras identify each other. Closely related animals like horses, however, can recognize each other without stripes, casting some doubt on that idea. If a zebra's stripes aren't about blending in, then what are they for? The scientists suggest they may have something to do with discouraging biting flies from feasting on the animals. An ea, ...ادامه مطلب
