By the time that book published, he was already a three-time Hugo Award winner (once each for best novella, novelette and short story), an established novelist, and a screenwriter (including writing episodes for the 1985 revival of "The Twilight Zone"). Now, five books and seven HBO seasons later, we all know there's a lot more going on in Westeros and Essos than most people realize. The official universe (or "canon," as it's called) of "A Song of Ice & Fire" books (commonly referred to as ASOIAF) includes everything written within the main books, plus quite a few prequels, some excerpts and a couple of history and art books -- plus the prerelease "Winds of Winter" chapters and the graphic novels based on the main book series. Google is marking the 155th birthday of Nettie Stevens, who discovered the presence or absence of the Y chromosome, found in the sperm of males. Google Thanks to the research of Nettie Stevens, we know that males are responsible for determining the sex of their children.To highlight her contributions to our understanding of chromosomes, Google launched a doodle to mark her 155th birthday on Thursday. Nettie Stevens died of breast cancer at the age of 50. Wikipedia Bo in 1861, Stevens grew up in a post-Civil War America in which job opportunities for women were limited to being teachers, nurses, or secretaries. But Stevens wanted to be a scientist, so she became a teacher, allowing herself to continue studies when she had enough money to do so.After eaing advanced degrees from Stanford University and Bryn Mawr College, she began working as a research scientist at the age of 39. Despite her late start in the field, Stevens made observations that advanced our understanding of sex determination.During her studies of the mealworm, Stevens discovered that males produced sperm with both X and Y chromosomes, while females produced eggs with only X chromosomes. From this, she concluded that sex determination is based on the presence or absence of the Y chromosome.Stevens died of breast cancer on May 4, 1912, at the age of 50. It's become so prevalent that even the police in Queensland, Australia, think it's funny. They actually wafted to Facebook to indict Nickelback for crimes against music. Comedian Jim Gaffigan appeared on Conan O'Brien's show to discuss this phenomenon."I feel like there's this moment where people just decide that we're all going to hate some celebrity for no real reason at all," he said.Such moments regularly occur on Twitter. Some even get memorialized by Twitter's latest feature, helpfully called Moments. Nickelback appeared in a cameo on Gaffigan's self-titled show. "I don't know anything about Nickelback, but I know that my friends who are supercool despise Nickelback," he said. If anything, the Accord's been one of the most solid cars to live this long. Car and Driver's included the Accord in its 10Best list a record 30 times, and while it might not be the most dynamically engaging car on the planet, we love it for its ability to be both fun and sensible, with the latest model eaing Roadshow's praise for its dashboard tech.Here's a fun fact for you: The original Accord's wheelbase was smaller than the current Honda Fit's. The cars you think are small today don't hold a candle to compacts from decades past. It's a mixture between a meme and a prank, with unrelated videos leading to a cacophonous appearance by the mutli-time WWE Champion. You can see examples of it here. Now, Cena has partnered with US carrier Cricket Wireless to bring the meme to life. WWE "superfans" were brought into what they thought was an audition for a role as ambassador for a WWE-themed Cricket store. In the background were decorations featuring the popular grappler. As the fans were auditioning their hearts out, Cena burst through an image of his likeness, accompanied by two trumpeters. Naturally, chaos ensued. Jim Watson/AFP/Getty Images Stop me if this sounds familiar: Auto parts supplier Takata has recalled tens of millions of its airbag inflators, because exposure to moisture and high temperatures can cause the inflators to explode in clouds of shrapnel. It's up to each individual automaker to recall cars with affected parts, though, so half the news stories you're seeing right now are related to Takata recalls. And you'll never guess what's just happened.After Ford announced its latest Takata recall, six more groups have issued their own recalls. There's no rhyme or reason to the announcements -- affected vehicles cover all segments, from cargo vans to supercars. All six of the new recalls cover only the passenger-side airbag inflator. Any issues with driver-side inflators will be dealt with separately, if they haven't already been recalled.General Motors doesn't appear to be pleased about all these recalls, and for good reason. In a statement, it made sure to note that its latest recall was done in accordance with the law (Takata recalled its parts, thus automakers must recall the vehicles that include those parts). "GM believes that its 2007-2011 trucks and SUVs do not pose an unreasonable safety risk at this time," the company said in a statement. Following a loss in the Indiana primary Tuesday, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz announced that he's dropping out of the presidential race, all but handing the Republican nomination to Donald Trump. Cruz's political supporters aren't the only people mouing the end of Cruz's presidential bid. Those who make memes on social-networking sites must also be sad to see the senator end his campaign. Cruz, after all, provided some of the most popular and hilarious fodder out of the entire election cycle. There was, for example, his supposed eerie resemblance to a sketch of the Zodiac Killer and that awkward, on-camera kiss he tried to share with his daughter. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Angry Video Game Nerd, a character created by filmmaker James Rolfe who's considered to be one of the grand daddies of the web's video game comedy community. That's right. The age of 10 is considered elderly by Inteet standards. Rolfe shot 139 episodes of his classic video game comedy series on YouTube and for sites like ScrewAttack and the now-defunct GameTrailers. He also made a feature length film for the character called "Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie". That means that he's got a lot of stuff like props, artwork, old scripts, storyboards and other items that tend to pile up when you're shooting a web series with an eye for production value and homemade special effects. Rolfe released a video (that has one tiny NSFW moment in it if curse words make you feel funny on the inside) on his YouTube channel Cinemassacre to announce that he's putting several props and pieces from his videos and film up for auction. Some of the more notable items up for bidding includes the "Beer Droid" from the Nerd's video on bad Star Wars games and a painting used as the title card for his Nintendo Power magazine special. Bidding is open on three websites including Sellersville Auction, Invaluable and AuctionZip and will end at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 6. An eBay auction is also in the works and Rolfe says in the video that he will post a link in the YouTube video's description when it goes live. All of the proceeds will be donated to Shriners Hospital for Children, a nationwide network of non-profit children's hospitals who provide care to patients regardless of their family's ability to pay. Today, Apple hits the big 4-0.That's officially "over the hill," according to Urban Dictionary. (Sorry, everyone 40 and over!) For some, hitting that milestone causes mild panic and even a midlife crisis. Apple won't be blowing its billions on Porsches (well, except for the rumors it's working on a self-driving car), but the birthday seems fitting for a company in a more, shall we call it, mature stage of life. Apple's no longer the brash, hippie company that introduced the Macintosh computer in 1984 as part of its mission to create "bicycles for the mind." And it isn't the struggling organization that was on the verge of bankruptcy when Steve Jobs retued to run it in 1997 and urged people to "Think Different." It's not even the Apple of the early 2000s, when it introduced one blockbuster product after another -- the iPod, iTunes store, iPhone, iPad and even the Apple retail store. The Apple of today is a grown-up company with hundreds of millions of customers actively using more than a billion of its products. It has a broader product lineup than at any other time in its history and it's the most valuable company on the planet, with a market cap of $604 billion. Apple's on top of the world. But is it at the top of its game?"When you're 40, you've been around the block a few times," said Carolina Milanesi, an analyst with Kantar Worldpanel. "It's not just about being exciting.
