Watch a double eclipse of the sun as seen from outer space - CNET

[embedded content] Twice a year, around the time of the autumnal and ve al equinoxes, is the Solar Dynamics Observatory's eclipse season. From its vantage point in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, the SDO's view of the sun is blocked once a day by the Earth. And on the rare occasion, both the Earth and the moon pass between the SDO and the sun -- a rare double eclipse. One of these took place on September 1, when first the Earth, then the moon, were captured blocking out the sun as the SDO filmed the whole thing in hi-res. It's not quite as dramatic as a solar eclipse take from the Earth, but it's still interesting if you know what you're looking at. Normally a solar eclipse seen from Earth, as the moon passes between the sun and us, ...

Refugees and tech: Scenes from a Greek tragedy - CNET

This is part of our Road Trip 2016 summer series "Life, Disrupted," about how technology is helping with the global refugee crisis -- if at all. Most people think of Greece as a great place to escape from the stress of everyday life. But not to the more than 57,000 people now trapped there. In 2015, more than 1.1 million refugees and migrants fled war and chaos in the Middle East and Africa to seek shelter in Europe. More than two-thirds of them came through Greece on their way to places like Germany, Sweden and the UK. That changed in March, when an agreement between the EU and Turkey -- combined with nearby countries' decisions to close their borders to migrants -- transformed Greece from an entry point to a dead end. Yet they still come. Even knowing they face life in limbo, refugee...

From Apple Watch to iPhone 7: The evolution of Apple's products under Tim Cook - CNET

Less than two months before succumbing to cancer, ailing Apple co-founder Steve Jobs resigned from the office of CEO on August 24, 2011. Tim Cook (left), who had been the company's Chief Operating Officer since 2004, took over the top spot at the world's preeminent technology company. In the five years since his ascension to the CEO position, Cook has made a unique imprint on Apple, becoming a more vocal social activist than his legendary predecessor, and even directly taking on the US gove ment in a high-profile fight for digital privacy. In terms of Apple's products, however, Cook has largely taken a conservative approach, shepherding evolutionary changes to the existing product line (iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV). The big exception -- and the biggest new product line of the Cook era ...

u200bMusician balances on Pokeball while playing Pokemon theme on flaming bagpipes - CNET

[embedded content] Even if you might be suffering from Pokemon Go overload, this video of a musician playing the Pokemon theme song on flaming bagpipes while dressed as the Pokemon creature Charmander is very impressive. Considering the Charmander has a tail that can produce fire, it makes sense that the bagpipes used to play the Pokemon theme also ignite with flames. The talented musician who made this tribute possible is Brian Kidd -- best known as The Unipiper -- from Portland, Oregon. This isn't the first time The Unipiper has paid homage to something geeky. Earlier in the year, he dressed up as Superman and taunted Batman by playing his bagpipes and riding around on his unicycle. The Unipiper also wore a Darth Vader costume and played the S...

Currently, it's only available to stream as a 45-minute long video, not as a typical audio-only album with individual tracks. The project was heavily teased, thanks to a mysterious live stream that unceremoniously debuted two weeks ago. NASA is weeks away from launching an asteroid-thumping spacecraft - CNET

NASA hopes to launch a spacecraft next month that will essentially chest-bump an asteroid and swipe a sample of space rock to bring back to Earth for study in the process. The Osiris-Rex spacecraft is about the size of a small bus when its solar arrays are deployed. Right now, the plan is to launch it from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on an Atlas V 411 rocket as soon as September 8 at 7:05 p.m. ET. It's scheduled to reach the potentially hazardous asteroid Bennu at some point in 2018. The craft's epic acronym name stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security - Regolith Explorer, which explains what NASA hopes it will do. Those goals include retu ing and analyzing a sample, mapping the asteroid and its chemical and mineral makeup and taking a close loo...

From James Bond to Game of Thrones, the impossible and incredible monasteries of Meteora - CNET

The karst rises from the flatland as if escaping the underworld, violently forced up by something down there. The truth is the opposite. The stark, imposing rocks are what's left after millions of years of weathering take their toll on the surrounding land. Towers of stone form the base, literally and figuratively, for the magic of this place. Somehow, impossibly perched atop these majestic peaks, are buildings. Not just a stone hut, but extensive complexes of beige rock and red roofs. They rise up where the stone ends, is if carved. As you marvel at one, you notice another, and then another. A series of these incredible buildings, made without roads, cranes, or even... stairs. This is Meteora, in central Greece, and it is unlike any place in the world. Here's what the...

Can copper coins prevent your laptop from overheating? - CNET

Time to cash in on a cool way to keep your laptop from overheating. This video from Science Channel shows how to create a heat sink by stacking copper coins on the computer, a tip the host credits to a Japanese Twitter user. "Copper is more thermally conductive than material most laptops are made of, drawing away heat to cool the machine," the channel's video explains. But you can't just go grab a bunch of pennies out of your kid's piggy bank. US pennies were made of pure copper from 1793 to 1837, then varied over the years, according to the US Mint. Since 1982, US pennies have been made of 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper-plated zinc, which is no good for this experiment. Look for the pennies from 1962-1981, the video recommends.IFL Science also points out that US quarter...

He shared his insights on the complicated makeup process during a build-a-Borg workshop at the Star Trek 50th anniversary convention here in Las Vegas. Westmore told fans no two Borg were ever alike. Each day, makeup artists swapped components and prosthetics around to avoid reusing the same combinations of pieces. The model for the Borg demo is also a cosplayer who worked on her own Borg costume. Before arriving on stage, artists applied a bald cap, lay...

Bjo and John Trimble were honored on stage at the Star Trek 50th anniversary convention. Let's go back into the '60s. "Star Trek" was in danger of cancellation after its second season. Bjo Trimble started a grassroots letter-writing campaign to organize fan support and call for a third season. It worked. "Star Trek" was renewed and then eventually revived in the late '70s with the start of the movie series. That may never have happened if the show was shut down after only two seasons. That's why Bjo Trimble is known as "the woman who saved Star Trek." Let's block ads! ...

Scenes from Greece's refugee crisis: Tales of tech - CNET

Most people think of Greece as a great place to escape from the stress of everyday life. But not to the more than 57,000 people now trapped there. In 2015, thousands of refugees and migrants fled war and chaos in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq and headed to Europe seeking shelter. A year later, many are living in squalid camps and abandoned buildings in Greece, waiting for asylum or a chance at legal residence in the European Union. During a 10-day trip in June, we talked to officials, migrants and activists in Athens, Lesvos -- the Greek island where most refugees first set foot in Europe last year -- and Thessaloniki, near the closed border of Macedonia, shutting migrants' way out. Eat to the beat: Sharks are less scary when they swim to peppy music - CNET

Thanks a lot, Steven Spielberg and John Williams, for forever creeping us out about sharks. Spielberg's 1975 movie "Jaws" wouldn't have been quite as terrifying without Williams' "duunnn dunnn" music, and we all know it. Now a study published Wednesday in the jou al PLOS One has quantified our quivering. Researchers from UC San Diego and Harvard showed 2,100 people a shark clip from the BBC's "Blue Planet" documentary series and either set it to ominous or uplifting music or let it run silently. "Participants who viewed a video clip set to ominous music rated sharks more negatively and less positively than those who watched the same clip set to uplifting music or to silence," the researchers wrote. Why does it matter? Researchers think documentary makers should choose their...
