Ready Player One (Unabridged) - Ernest Cline

Description At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut - part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed. It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of 10,000 planets. And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being...

Watch a double eclipse of the sun as seen from outer space - CNET

[embedded content] Twice a year, around the time of the autumnal and ve al equinoxes, is the Solar Dynamics Observatory's eclipse season. From its vantage point in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, the SDO's view of the sun is blocked once a day by the Earth. And on the rare occasion, both the Earth and the moon pass between the SDO and the sun -- a rare double eclipse. One of these took place on September 1, when first the Earth, then the moon, were captured blocking out the sun as the SDO filmed the whole thing in hi-res. It's not quite as dramatic as a solar eclipse take from the Earth, but it's still interesting if you know what you're looking at. Normally a solar eclipse seen from Earth, as the moon passes between the sun and us, ...

Are iPhone prices giving you heartburn? Consider your options - CNET

If the price tag of a new phone makes you sweat, you're not alone.Since all four major carriers have done away with their device subsidies, US consumers for the first time are seeing how much their fancy phones actually cost. And it's not pretty. While we've all been trained to lust for the latest Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy gadget, which cost a small fortune, the reality is that you can still get a pretty sophisticated, good-quality phone for a fraction of the price. In this edition of Ask Maggie, I spell out options for a frugal shopper. Dear Maggie,My old phone is on the fritz. I need a new one stat, but the prices are horrifying. I've heard old iPhones drop in price right after the new iPhones come out. Is the drop substantial? I don't want a used or pre-owned phone, so what advice ...

Refugees and tech: Scenes from a Greek tragedy - CNET

This is part of our Road Trip 2016 summer series "Life, Disrupted," about how technology is helping with the global refugee crisis -- if at all. Most people think of Greece as a great place to escape from the stress of everyday life. But not to the more than 57,000 people now trapped there. In 2015, more than 1.1 million refugees and migrants fled war and chaos in the Middle East and Africa to seek shelter in Europe. More than two-thirds of them came through Greece on their way to places like Germany, Sweden and the UK. That changed in March, when an agreement between the EU and Turkey -- combined with nearby countries' decisions to close their borders to migrants -- transformed Greece from an entry point to a dead end. Yet they still come. Even knowing they face life in limbo, refugee...

Why you'll soon forget the iPhone ever had a headphone jack - CNET

Over the last few months I've written about the persistent rumors that Apple will remove the headphone jack on the next iPhone.Every time I write about it, readers' comments have been generally negative, with some folks threatening to boycott the iPhone when Apple drops the headphone jack.Well, from all indications, including published reports citing "people familiar with the matter" and some early iPhone 7 cases I've received, it's the end of the road for the iPhone's headphone hack. But don't panic, folks. After being on the fence about the issue these last few months, I've come to the conclusion I can live without the headphone jack. And I think you can, too. Here are the reasons why: ...

From Apple Watch to iPhone 7: The evolution of Apple's products under Tim Cook - CNET

Tim Cook (left), who had been the company's Chief Operating Officer since 2004, took over the top spot at the world's preeminent technology company. In the five years since his ascension to the CEO position, Cook has made a unique imprint on Apple, becoming a more vocal social activist than his legendary predecessor, and even directly taking on the US gove ment in a high-profile fight for digital privacy. In terms of Apple's products, however, Cook has largely taken a conservative approach, shepherding evolutionary changes to the existing product line (iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV). The big exception -- and the biggest new product line of the Cook era ...

Towers of stone form the base, literally and figuratively, for the magic of this place. Somehow, impossibly perched atop these majestic peaks, are buildings. Not just a stone hut, but extensive complexes of beige rock and red roofs. They rise up where the stone ends, is if carved. As you marvel at one, you notice another, and then another. Top US Marine says smartphone society has made soldiers soft - CNET

Cell phone radiation can be a danger to soldiers, but maybe not for the reason you'd expect.Gen. Robert B. Neller, the top officer in the US Marine Corps, says those phones can give away a soldier's position. It's just one of the ways that mode comforts have made troops weaker, in his opinion. Speaking at a panel Tuesday on the future of expeditionary warfare, Neller told the audience that the military is now going back to basics, teaching sailors to navigate by the stars and soldiers how to use camouflage. Those skills hadn't been needed because the enemy didn't have planes, satellites, jammers and the ability to see the electromagnetic radiation spectrum, Neller said.
