After being the editor-in-chief of Engadget, co-founding The Verge, and serving as the editor of Bloomberg Digital, Josh Topolsky is prepping a new media brand, according to the Wall Street Joual.The new website is called The Outline, and has reportedly raised $5 million in funding with a plan to launch in the fall of 2016. Topolsky told the Wall Street Joual that his plan is to focus on bringing readers directly to the website, rather than relying on social media to drive traffic. Moving beyond just technology, The Outline will focus on politics, business, culture as well as technology. At the moment, if you visit the website for the Outline, there's a simple email notification signup and links to social media accounts. BitTorrent BitTorrent, best known for its peer-to-peer sharing technologies, continues its push toward becoming a media company with the BitTorrent News network. The live-streaming news network will be available through its BitTorrent Live app for Apple TV, iOS devices and MacOS computers starting July 18 with coverage of the Republican National Convention."Television news has been stagnating for some time," Vice President of Media for BitTorrent Erik Schwartz said in a statement on the company's site. "It's having trouble appealing to a generation that grew up online. We're building BitTorrent News to solve that problem. We are using superior data and tools and the Silicon Valley ethos of lean startup to build a nimble news organization that will lea quickly from user behavior."According to BitTorrent, viewers can see 10-12 hours of live coverage of the RNC with play-by-play commentary on the speeches and events as well as guest commentary and all in real-time. The social network, known in part for its users' bite-size, and often biting, commentary in real time, will be joining forces with CBS News to live-stream CBSN's coverage of the Republican and Democratic national conventions, the first of which kicks off next week. César Salza/CNET China has issued a crackdown on online news organisations across the country, waing them not use social media as a source without carefully verifying and fact-checking claims first.The Cyberspace Administration of China issued the directive, with the state media agency Xinhua reporting that the move was made in a bid to combat "false news.""It is forbidden to use hearsay to create news or use conjecture and imagination to distort the facts," Xinhua reported, according to a translation in the South China Moing Post. "All websites should bear the key responsibility to further streamline the course of reporting and publishing of news, and set up a sound inteal monitoring mechanism among all mobile news portals [and the social media chat websites] Weibo or WeChat," it said.It's not the first time that China's vexed relationship with censorship and the inteet has been in the spotlight. In 2014, censors targeted WeChat messaging accounts hosted by a number of joualists, while Google has long faced issues over with its Gmail service in China as well as the blocking certain search results, such as those associated with Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Bryan Cranston has signed on with the Lionsgate "Power Rangers" reboot, the "Breaking Bad" actor said Tuesday on Twitter.Cranston joins the cast as Zordon, the disembodied holographic head in a tube that trains, leads and advises the group of teen superheroes. Apple might be pulling its support from the Republican National Convention, but it doesn't appear to be giving up on the GOP entirely. Roku is making it easier for viewers to catch up on the news by adding it into its universal search feature.The search feature -- which is available on current Roku streaming boxes, the Streaming Stick and televisions that have the Roku platform built-in -- now allows for entering in a topic such as "Apple" or "NBA," and will retrieve a listing of videos pertaining to that topic from across many of streaming news channels on the platform. These include news broadcasts from the four major US networks -- such as ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX -- as well as from digital outlets like Yahoo (Disclosure: CBS is the parent company of CNET). The streaming company announced the addition in a blog post on Friday.And what if you don't have a specific topic in mind? News videos can also be searched using the date by entering in the numbers without punctuation (for instance, June 20th would be 620).Roku's search feature has mainly served to help a viewer find a movie or television show across the myriad of digital stores and subscription services available on the platform.
