You walk up to an unassuming ATM kiosk, slip a plastic debit card into the slot, punch in a personal code and withdraw cash. Convenient, absolutely, but ATMs can host hidden dangers, especially for travelers already distracted by luggage, train schedules or herding an unruly family through an airport. It's a scam called ATM skimming, and it's only one of the pitfalls to watch out for, especially when traveling in unfamiliar territory, whether you're on vacation or a work trip. And with a little preparation, you can outwit the crooks.Beware the skim scam Skimming is a way for criminals to gain access to your ATM card's magnetic stripe information and your PIN, giving them open access to your bank account. • WikiLeaks under 'sustained attack' after announcing release of Turkey docs - CNET

  • WikiLeaks said Monday it is suffering from a 'sustained attack' after announcing it would release a trove of documents detailing Turkey's political power structure."Our infrastructure is under sustained attack," said a tweet sent by WikiLeaks, perhaps best known for the release of classified govement and military documents. The document-leaking organization said earlier Monday it was preparing to release 300,000 emails and 500,000 documents related to the failed Turkish coup Friday. Wikileaks went on to suggest that the Turkish govement might be behind the attack on the organization."We are unsure of the true origin of the attack. The timing suggests a Turkish state power faction or its allies," Wikileaks said in a subsequent tweet. "We will prevail & publish."The document release and attack on Wikileaks come just three days after military factions in Turkey tried to take control of the country Friday night. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube were reportedly blocked in Turkey during attempted coup, but many residents appear to have gotten around the blocks, posting messages and videos, likely using VPNs or other anonymizing services.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • You may not think of it this way, but the phone in your pocket is really an extension of you -- it contains everything from personal photos and videos to critical contact information. It's also valuable data that cyber criminals can exploit. This means you need to make sure your phone is protected. While your device can be compromised anywhere, you may expose yourself to additional risks while on a trip. "When you're traveling, you may do some things differently than you'd do at home," said Michael Kaiser, executive director for the National Cyber Security Alliance or NCSA, a nonprofit public-private partnership that promotes safe and secure use of the inteet. For instance, Kaiser said you might be tempted to use an unprotected Wi-Fi network to save on roaming charges if you're traveling abroad. And you may not consider the risks of sharing your location via apps or pictures you post on social media."You might not want to share with the world that you're in Hawaii for the next two weeks and no one is at your house," he said.In this edition of Ask Maggie, I offer some tips for keeping your smartphone secure both at home and while you're on the road. Dear Maggie,I know you offer lots of advice about traveling abroad with your cell phone. • How to back up your precious photos while traveling abroad - CNET

  • It's tragic enough when your phone is lost or stolen while you're on vacation, but it's even worse when it also happens to contain every one of the thousand pictures you took on your holiday.Phone cameras have gotten so good, you may not need to take a separate camera on vacation. Many shutterbugs are opting to leave their point-and-shoot and DSLR cameras at home so they can travel lighter. But phones also have a sneaky habit of sliding out of pockets on cab rides or disappearing into the hands of clever pickpockets while their owners are taking in the local sites. In this edition of Ask Maggie, I offer some advice about how to back up those cherished memories so they're not lost forever. Dear Maggie,Two years ago my family went to Turkey for vacation. Two days before our trip ended my phone, which had all the pictures, was stolen. I was devastated. We're about to embark on another vacation. This time to Italy and Spain. I'm hoping my phone isn't stolen again, but just in case, what's the best way to back up my photos while I'm on the road? Thanks,Jaded TravelerDear Jaded,Luckily, you have two great options to consider. Automatic phone backupThe simplest and easiest way to ensure you never lose any of your photos is to sign up for an automatic photo backup service, which will store your images in the "cloud." It doesn't matter which cloud service you use. There are several. Apple users may opt for iCloud. There's also Google Photos, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, Amazon Cloud Drive, and even Facebook. These services can automatically suck your photos in the cloud, so you don't even have to think about losing them. Some can also delete images on your device as they're stored in the cloud so you never run out of room on your phone. Services like Google Photos will help you organize an, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Subaru, Chimani team up to bring national park travel guides to smartphones - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCar CultureSubaru, Chimani team up to bring national park travel guides to smartphonesEnlarge ImageSo many tiles you'd think we're shopping for kitchen flooring. Subaru If you've ever paid a bill online, you'd know that utility companies, banks and the like are all about "going paperless." Cutting down on mailed bills reduces waste, limits environmental impact and saves money. Going paperless isn't limited to industries that want your money, though, as evidenced by Subaru and its latest app.Subaru is teaming up with outdoor-related app company Chimani to release a series of 59 apps. Each is its own travel guide for a separate US national park, providing users with all sorts of information, like park facilities, points of interest, hiking trails and more. The maps come down through GPS, so no cell service or Wi-Fi connection is required. The automaker's role is more on the ancillary side, providing development support (read: money) and helping raise awareness for cutting down on waste in national parks. Moving paper guides to an app is definitely a great start, although I wouldn't recommend using your phone as a quick and easy replacement for a match. It's not a perfect replacement for paper. All 59 apps are available on Apple's App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. Chimani also has apps for Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and all those other cool places you haven't yet been to. And if you do use this as a reason to head out to a national park for the first time, don't forget -- when you leave, make sure it looks the same as when you arrived.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • 'Crowd Control,' part 8: Traveling between universes requires a new body - CNET

  • "Crowd Control: Heaven Makes a Killing," CNET's crowdsourced science fiction novel written and edited by readers, continues. To read past installments, lea more about the project or see our contributor list, visit the digital table of contents.Chapter 7Excerpted from "Meta: The Life of a Diplomat."U.S.S.N. Washington, low Earth orbit, April 12, 2051Meta awoke to classical music and cheerful whistling. He was lying on a cold surface, naked. Only a white linen blanket lay over him. He clenched and unclenched his fingers, feeling unnaturally stiff.Meta sat up. The new body he was occupying, a female's, he noted, needed a moment to adapt."Um...ma'am? Dr. Parker?" A man at the other end of the room stuttered nervously.Meta rolled his eyes and snorted in disgust. Dr. Parker. Definitely sounds like a migrant name, he thought to himself. Better get used to it, at least for the duration of the mission. He tried to get off the table but was overwhelmed with fatigue and joints that felt stiff with disuse. This was an older body he was inhabiting, and the lack of vigor took some getting used to. Even breathing was a difficult task until his -- her -- diaphragm and lungs remembered their function. Strange to have a pulse that was not his, thinking thoughts with a brain that had been dead moments ago. He held his balance, gripping the table, and the man approached to help, tentatively.Josephina's neurons come back to life, without Josephina at the helm. National Science Foundation Meta's training had taught him how to compartmentalize his mental self from the physical self, to use his new shell as the tool it was meant to be, but this was not an insignificant adjustment."Get me out of here," Meta snapped."Just one second, please, um, ma'am."Fumbling with the panel next to the door, the man then made a call, which summoned a number of frantic doctors and nurses nearly instantaneously. • Bundle up, travelers. It's snowing methane on Pluto - CNET

  • You might want to rethink your future vacation plans for Pluto. If you absolutely insist on going, you'll want to pack a warm jacket and perhaps some snowshoes. NASA scientists revealed a new tidbit on Thursday about the weather on the dwarf planet: it seems to have methane snow.Pluto has a large dark area known as "Cthulhu." H.P. Lovecraft aficionados will recognize that as the name of one of the author's most famous fictional deities, a tentacle-faced monstrous creature that signals the doom of humanity. Pluto's Cthulhu covers an area about the size of US state Alaska and it features some intriguing mountainous areas topped with snow made from methane.NASA's New Horizons mission conducted a close flyby of Pluto in July 2015 and is still in the process of sending back images and data. Enlarge ImageThese enhanced and false-color images show the presence of methane snow on Pluto. NASA/JHUAPL/SwRI The mountain range scientists are focusing on is 260 miles (420 kilometers) long and is located in Cthulhu's southeaste reaches. A NASA image released Thursday shows the mountain range as whitish raised spots against the reddish plains below. The false-color image on the far right highlights methane ice in purple. The ice coincides with the location of the mountain slopes. We're all familiar with methane as a greenhouse-gas byproduct of cattle windiness here on Earth. NASA researchers believe it may behave on Pluto a lot like water does here. "That this material coats only the upper slopes of the peaks suggests methane ice may act like water in Earth's atmosphere, condensing as frost at high altitude," John Stansberry, a New Horizons science team member, said in a statement. New Horizons' data dump back to Earth will continue, but the spacecraft could get a mission extension that will take it deeper into the Kuiper Belt, a region of the solar system that extends beyond Neptune's orbit and is , ...ادامه مطلب
