  • Who's the deadliest cybernetic villain in movies? Hint: Cartman would approve - CNET

  • Sonos charts its post-Echo strategy on August 30 - CNET

  • Sonos will share its vision of "the future of sound" at a media event on August 30 in New York. While no new hardware is expected, the event will likely outline additional functionality for the company's existing line of wireless audio products -- including the Play:5, which was introduced in 2015. In a March blogpost, CEO John MacFarlane said the company would be making some changes to its strategy which lead to job losses. "As we look to the future there are two big areas that we're leaning into: paid streaming services, and voice control," MacFarlane said at the time. Sonos In particular, MacFarlane praised the efforts of Amazon in popularizing voice control in American homes. "Alexa/Echo is the first product to really showcase the power of voice control in the home. Its popularity with consumers will accelerate innovation across the entire industry" MacFarlane wrote. • Olympic cyclist 'live-tweets' his whole race - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageHe's a tweeter. He's a winner. Dan Craven; Twitter screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET I knew the headline was true, because it was on Twitter.More precisely, it was on the official Twitter Sports feed. It read, "Namibian#Olympics cyclist Tweeted through his entire race."Immediately, I pictured a heaving human with one hand on the handlebars and the other clutching his iPhone. Then I looked at the small print. Beneath Twitter Sports' headline that would no longer pass muster on Facebook was a clarification: "An Olympic cyclist 'live-tweeted' his entire race." (See those extra inverted commas?)The man in question was Namibian cyclist Dan Craven. His Twitter feed did, indeed, have many tweeted observations posted during his race. Some were even amusing. For example, "Now I'm craving a rusk. I'll give a pair of my socks to anyone who brings me a rusk at the finish." (A rusk is a South African/Namibian specialty, a hard dry biscuit that Craven loves -- and tries to avoid -- because of its carb and sugar content.)I did rather adore, "Cross wind. Bugger that. Drinks anyone? How about a caipirinha. #gutter."I was sure that this couldn't have been Craven himself tweeting. But then I espied: "I have magical powers. Front of the peloton. You forget my beard can tweet for itself."Craven does have a substantial growth. Could it be both substantial and versatile? Craven came clean. "My girlfriend Collyn Ahart is a genius. Her day job is marketing strategy. I came up with the idea last night but had no idea she would make such a splash," he told me. Her tweeting process, he said, was very simple. "She just started having fun and ended up having a blast," Craven told me. You, though, will wonder how his race went. I rushed to the results page for his men's road race. It read: "Dan Craven: DNF.", , olympic cyclist , olympic cyclist legs , olympic cyclist vs toaster , olympic cyclist quads , olympic cyclist zika , olympic cyclists 2016 , olympic cyclist robbed , olympic cyclist mugged , olympic cyclist stripped of medal , olympic cyclist robert , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Marissa Mayer says the secret of success is working 130 hours a week - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageIs it really about the hours spent working? © ELIJAH NOUVELAGE/Reuters/Corbis You're desperate to be a success, aren't you? What else is there in life?If you can't waft into a fancy restaurant and tu heads with your sense of net worth, who are you?How do you get there, though? Malcolm Gladwell would have you believe that you must spend 10,000 hours working at something before you can be truly world class. Though some think this might be truly nonsense. We now have a new definition from Marissa Mayer. The current and soon-perhaps-not-to-be CEO of Yahoo raised an exclamation point in my mind when she told Bloomberg Businessweek that Google's success wasn't about working hard. It was about sacrificing your self -- yes, even your body -- wholesale to the company."When reporters write about Google, they write about it as if it was inevitable," she said. "The actual experience was more like, 'Could you work 130 hours in a week?' The answer is yes, if you're strategic about when you sleep, when you shower, and how often you go to the bathroom."Do you tend to be strategic about how often you go to the bathroom? Or are you more in the camp of those who go to the bathroom when they need to go to the bathroom? The notion that pulling all-nighters and sacrificing your all to the conce is much championed in Silicon Valley.Scientists tend to think you're more productive when you take a break or two to unwind. Tim Ferris seems to believe you just need to work four hours a week. Mayer, though, thinks she can measure success by numbers. She told Bloomberg that her husband, Zachary Bogue, runs a co-working office in San Francisco. "If you go in on a Saturday afteoon, I can tell you which startups will succeed, without even knowing what they do," she claimed. "Being there on the weekend is a huge i, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Hack in a box: Two thieves steal more than 30 cars using a laptop - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCar IndustryHack in a box: Two thieves steal more than 30 cars using a laptopABC13 declined to mention what kinds of Jeep and Dodge vehicles were stolen in this spree, but given the limited number of Jeep models on the market, I figured a Grand Cherokee would be a fine picture to include. Jeep Back in the day, if you wanted to steal some cars, you may have only needed a coat hanger, a screwdriver and a rudimentary understanding of wiring. These days, it's significantly more complicated, but that's not about to stop criminals. It certainly didn't stop two men, who allegedly stole more than 30 Jeep and Dodge vehicles using a laptop.Houston police told local affiliate ABC13 that it finally caught the duo after surveillance footage led the police right to 'em. The fuzz tracked the scofflaws until they were eventually caught in the middle of yet another heist. All in, police estimate the two have stolen dozens of cars, and could be part of a larger ring. Now that they've been caught, police are trying to figure out how it was done. They know a laptop is involved. A Fiat Chrysler spokesman told ABC13 that it could involve a specific database that lists codes that pair key fobs to vehicles. The thieves could have gained access to the database and created working key fobs on the spot after taking note of a vehicle identification number (VIN), which is visible in several places, including through the windshield.Once a fob and vehicle are paired, the car wouldn't know the fob was illegitimate. Everything would appear kosher to the computer, and off you go. FCA has launched its own inteal investigation into the matter, as it's possible that an employee sold access to that database for personal profit. But again, there's still uncertainty as to how these vehicles were actually stolen."No matter what you do, you have to realize, somebody has the ability and the knowledge to steal your , ...ادامه مطلب

  • The 2017 QX30 is officially the least expensive way into an Infiniti - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCrossoversThe 2017 QX30 is officially the least expensive way into an InfinitiInfiniti would probably prefer it if I didn't keep making references to the GLA-Class. Infiniti Last week, I wrote that Infiniti is offering up a pile of free stuff if you're willing to sign up for its Q60 reservation program, which puts you at the front of the line for its latest coupe. Now, it's doing the same thing for its QX30 crossover, but thankfully, this one's got a smaller price tag attached. The 2017 QX30, a crossover that's kind-of-but-not-really-secretly a Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class undeeath its admittedly attractive skin, starts at $29,950. That's for the base model, which comes with the same engine as every other QX30 -- a Mercedes-sourced, 2.0-liter I-4 good for 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque -- and front-wheel drive.Step up to the QX30 Luxury, and expect to spend $32,600, which is about in line with a base GLA-Class. The QX30 Premium lives one tier above that, coming in at $35,300. The most expensive variant is the QX30 Sport, which will cost $38,500. All of those vehicles have front-wheel drive -- if you want AWD, it's available on Luxury (a $1,800 option) and Premium ($2,400) trims only.Like before, if you sign up for that reservation program, you'll be one of the first to pick up a QX30. Yes, that means you have to shell out dough sooner than everyone else, but like with the Q60, Infiniti's sweetening the deal with some free stuff. If you sign up, you get a choice of a GoPro Hero4 Silver, Bose SoundLink wireless headphones, a one-night stay at a Starwood Hotels location or a "specially curated culinary experience," which sounds delightfully hipster-y.We recently headed up to the Pacific Northwest to take a spin in the QX30. Be sure to read our first take if you're interested in seeing what Infiniti's latest crossover is like. The car goes on sale in September. , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Kickstarter has created almost 30,000 full-time jobs since 2009 - CNET

  • Enlarge Image Kickstarter Established in 2009, Kickstarter has changed many lives. A new study from the University of Pennsylvania shows just how big a difference crowd funding, and Kickstarter in particular, has made. The main findings were that Kickstarted has created 283,000 part-time jobs for creatives, 29,600 full-time jobs and 8,800 new companies, including nonprofits. All up, over $5.3 billion has been generated for "creators and their communities." It found that for every 1,000 projects started on Kickstarter, 82 full-time employees were hired. The study points out that a huge benefit of crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter is that it allows creators and ideas-types to pay creatives for work they do, helping to curb the "work for exposure" model that many artists have to endure. Pebble and the now-Facebook-owned Oculus are two examples of big tech companies who used Kickstarter to find their footing. On the gaming front, the highly anticipated Shemue III raised over $6 million through the crowdfunding platform. You can read more of UPenn's findings here. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Did you buy a GTX 970? Nvidia owes you $30 if you live in the US - CNET

  • Anyone in the United States who purchased a GTX 970 may be eligible for a $30 payout from Nvidia, thanks to a proposed settlement in a class-action lawsuit.Last year, a series of lawsuits were filed against Nvidia and Nvidia card manufacturers over what amounts to false advertising. (The lawsuits were then consolidated into one in March 2015). The main issue raised in the lawsuit was that the GTX 970, advertised as having 4 GB of VRAM, in fact does not--at least not exactly.Within a few months of the the 970's launch in September 2014, owners discovered that games that used more than 3.5 GB of memory ran into performance issues that weren't happening on the GTX 980. The following January, Nvidia revealed that the configuration for streaming multiprocessors on the two cards are different. Nvidia As a result, the 970's memory was split into 3.5 GB and 0.5 GB sections. It claimed this didn't result in a meaningful impact on performance, but as PC Gamer reported at the time, numerous users reported issues when playing games that used more than 3.5 GB of VRAM. It was also discovered by PC Perspective that the 970 had a smaller L2 cache and fewer render output processors than Nvidia had originally claimed. These three shortcomings comprised the lawsuit's allegations that the 970 was sold "based on misleading representations" and "do not operate as represented."Rather than risk this going any further, the two sides have reached a proposed settlement, paperwork for which was filed in a US District Court in Califoia this week. As part of this, Nvidia won't admit any liability, which is standard in a situation like this. It will, however, pay out $30 for each 970 purchased in the US to anyone who submits a valid claim. Before this can happen, the court will need to approve the settlement during a hearing on August 24.If approved, eligible owners will be notified of the settlement by October 23,, ...ادامه مطلب

  • SpaceX's Mars lander mission said to cost $300 million - CNET

  • An artist's illustration of what SpaceX hopes will become a real view some day. SpaceX NASA has suggested that SpaceX is spending around $300 million on its Red Dragon Mars lander mission, according to Space News. The space exploration company has not disclosed how much it's spending on the Red Dragon mission it announced in April. But the price tag was revealed, indirectly, by a NASA administrator at a meeting on Tuesday, Space News reported. NASA estimates that the space agency will spend approximately $32 million on the mission, which it's supporting in exchange for data collected. "They did talk to us about a 10-to-1 arrangement in terms of cost: theirs 10, ours 1," NASA's Jim Reuter is quoted as saying. "I think that's in the ballpark." Given NASA's investment, SpaceX's expenses would amount to more than $300 million. NASA didn't immediately respond to a request for confirmation and comment on the Space News report. A SpaceX spokesman declined to comment other than referring back to NASA's estimate. SpaceX founder Elon Musk has long talked about a goal of putting people on Mars in 10 years. Red Dragon lays the groundwork for that dream to become reality. SpaceX has said the Dragon lander will reach Mars as soon as 2018.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Hyperloop One says it can get you from Helsinki to Stockholm in 30 minutes - CNET

  • While it's far from a reality, many startups, consultants and industry prognosticators are talking up the possibilities of Hyperloop travel, the concept for ultra-fast travel proposed by Tesla founder Elon Musk. Hyperloop One is one of the start-ups trying to bring this technology to life, and in a presentation put together by consultancy KPMG, the company claims it can cut the travel time between Helsinki and Stockholm from about 3.5 hours (including travel time to the airport) to about 28 minutes, as part of an ambitious plan that could cost as much as $21 billion. Hyperloop One Where will that money come from? According to a new blog post from Hyperloop One, "Govements at the city, regional, national and EU level may choose to fund the project or provide loan guarantees to a private entity based on the wider economic benefits." The tunnel for the system would be installed along the floor of the Baltic sea, and use "pressurized capsules [that] ride on an air cushion driven by linear induction motors and air compressors."Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Airbnb may be seeking new funding valuing the company at $30 billion - CNET

  • Airbnb is said to be looking to raise a new round of funding that would value the company at $30 billion, according to The New York Times. That figure would put the service for short-term home rentals just behind Uber, which is the most valued US startup. In just two years, Airbnb's valuation will have tripled, the Times said. The San Francisco company plans to use the money to further expand, including growing overseas, unnamed sources told the Times. Airbnb declined to comment on the Times report. A week ago, mayors from 10 cities around the world announced an alliance to help them better regulate so-called sharing-economy companies like Airbnb and Uber. Airbnb said Monday that it is suing San Francisco over changes to a law that would require short-term rental services to remove hosts from their site who haven't registered with the city.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب
