At the upcoming New York auto show, Toyota will show off one of the first big changes to its line-up related to the dissolution of its Scion brand. The former Scion FR-S will reemerge as the 2017 Toyota 86, sporting power and performance upgrades.
The Scion FR-S is a sport-oriented coupe with a front-mounted 2-liter engine and rear-wheel-drive, co-developed with Subaru, which sells its own version of the car as the BRZ. As Toyota aounced last month it would dissolve the Scion brand, the how the former Scion models would be folded back into the Toyota brand was a mystery.
Toyota will unveil the 2017 86 at next week's New York auto show. Toyota already sold the Scion FR-S as the 86 in Japan, and calls it the GT86 in Europe.
In a press release, Toyota promises revised styling for the front of the 2017 86, and, of course, new "86" badges.
More exciting, Toyota tweaked the performance of the 2-liter four cylinder engine, which uses a combination of port and direct injection. Horsepower is up to 205 from 200, while torque gets a bump to 158 pound-feet from 150. Toyota also promises revised suspension tuning for even better handling.
For its Toyota brand debut, the 86 gets LED taillights and revised bumpers.
