Marvel superheroes have stolen the Hollywood spotlight in recent years, but DC is set to make a big comeback next week with "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice".
Among those excited to see the superhero showdown is artistic Malaysian group Fusion Wayang Kulit, who recreated several DC heroes as traditional Indonesian Wayang Kulit shadow puppets.
The art of Wayang Kulit puppetry is over a thousand years old and originated in the royal courts of the Indonesian islands, brought there by Indian traders. The stories told by these puppets normally involve gods and kings, and in 2003 UNESCO placed Wayang Kulit on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The team, founded by Tintoy Chuo and Take Huat, has used this revered art form to reimagine Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, all of whom will feature in"Dawn of Justice" film. The heroic trio can be seen in that long awaited film in cinemas from March 24 in Australia and March 25 in the UK and US.
These puppets were originally made for an exhibit in Penang, Malaysia, that took place last August. Other Justice League heroes, like The Green Lante, have been recreated too.
Chuo and Huat aims to revive what is essentially a dying art form by merging traditional shadow puppetry with mode pop culture. They said that the DC themed puppets are "an expression of love for the superheroes."
Each puppet is made by hand and takes hundreds of man-hours to build and paint. This set of DC puppets is not the first time Fusion Wayang Kulit has created shadow puppets based on pop culture, with the group also having created Star Wars and Bruce Lee themed sets.
