Apple has been fighting the FBI's efforts to conscript the company to help hack a terrorist's iPhone.

In a motion filed Monday, the Department of Justice asked to cancel a Tuesday hearing on whether it could force Apple to help it open the phone, which is encrypted. It's a strange twist in a heated battle over whether the govement could order a company to create software to break its own privacy protections.
"Testing is required to determine whether it is a viable method that will not compromise data on Farook's iPhone," lawyers for the Justice Department wrote in the brief. "If the method is viable, it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple Inc. set forth in the All Writs Act Order in this case."
Apple and DoJ spokespeople did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
