A woman has been indicted for allegedly live-streaming the rape of her friend.
Marina Lonina, 18, and a 17-year-old friend were socializing with Raymond Gates, 29, on February 27 at a home in Columbus, Ohio, the Franklin County Prosecuting Attoey's Office said Wednesday in a news release. At one point, Gates allegedly forced sexual intercourse on the 17-year-old girl.
Lonina allegedly used live-streaming app Periscope to broadcast the assault, according to Prosecuting Attoey Ron O'Brien. Law enforcement found out about the incident through another friend of Lonina's who was reportedly watching the live stream from another state.
Live broadcasting is quickly growing in popularity as technology such as Twitter's Periscope and Facebook Live Video have handed people the tools to stream video in real time. But the excitement of sharing video live can lead people to lose perspective of what they're filming.
By default, all Periscope streams are public, though you can direct them only to certain people.
Both Lonina and Gates have been indicted by a grand jury on one count of kidnapping, two counts of rape, one count of sexual battery and three counts of pandering sexually-oriented matter involving a minor. Lonina has also been indicted on two counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance for allegedly photographing the victim in the nude the night before the alleged rape.
Lonina and Gates each face a potential prison sentence of at least 40 years, O'Brien said.
Neither Twitter nor the prosecutors office immediately retued requests for comment.
