Stuntman Damien Walters probably has antifreeze ruing through his veins instead of blood. He executed a stuer of a stunt that would make any action-movie director proud.
Walters completed a no-look backflip over a Formula E electric race car, timing his jump perfectly to allow the speeding vehicle to pass beneath him as he rotated his body mid-air. You're going to want to watch this more than once.
The stunt is designed to wow viewers, but it's also designed to bring some attention to Formula E ahead of this weekend's Visa Paris ePrix race. Formula E racing is a lot like the open-cockpit, open-wheel Formula 1 racing that's been around for decades. The difference is that the cars are electric. It's like what would happen if Tesla took over NASCAR.
Walters has quite a resume. He acted as a stunt double for Daniel Craig in the James Bond film "Skyfall" and doubled for Michael Fassbender in "Assassin's Creed." He's skilled as a gymnast, free-ruer and stuntman. He needed to call on all of those abilities to pull off the race-car leap.
The jump worked due to Walters' skill and his impeccable sense of timing. It took two days of plaing and rehearsals during which the car passed to the side of him on practice runs. The car hit 60 mph (97 kilometers per hour) during the stunt. Formula E racers are capable of top speeds of more than double that.
If the regular video isn't enough to get your blood pumping, then check out the even nuttier 360-degree version where you can pause the video and view Walters suspended against the sky. The viewpoint comes from the car's cockpit. You ride along with the stunt driver and get to feel the growing sense of anxiety as you approach the defenseless human in the middle of the track. And then...whew. Made it.
