In a case of "maybe we should've gotten some more opinions on this," Snapchat added a filter in celebration of the marijuana-centric pseudo-holiday 4/20 that adds reggae singer Bob Marley's face onto your own. Along with Marley's locks and a knitted cap, the app also makes your skin appear brown, a feature that some users say is akin to digital blackface.
Snapchat didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
"Bob Marley" is now trending on Twitter, and Snapchat released a statement to The Verge that said the company worked with the Bob Marley Estate to create the filter. Does this make adding brown skin to users' faces and essentially reducing a music legend to a 4/20 marijuana punchline right? Not so much.
Snapchat isn't the only app that changes the color of your skin in an attempt to imitate a celebrity of color. MSQRD does the same thing without as much fanfare. But Snapchat's popularity and its 4/20 timing have made the outcry against an app changing your skin tone much louder.
