The Inteet is shedding tears Thursday following the news that music icon Prince, patron saint of all things purple, is dead at the age of 57.
The groundbreaking artist and eccentric prodigal son of Miesota was beloved by many and controversial to others. Milleials and tech-savvy Generation Xers may have been bewildered by Prince's sometimes contentious relationship with technology -- he even expressed his disdain for cell phones just a few years ago.
He famously declared the Inteet to be "dead" back in 2010. And he was one of the more litigious artists, serving take-downs to fans on YouTube and Facebook, some of which got a lot of press.
You may be able to find videos of his songs on YouTube as news of his death spreads, but don't be surprised if the audio has been muted. Times when he's thrown his lot in with the online set have seen Prince make some interesting choices -- last year he aounced his next album would be released exclusively on Jay-Z's streaming service, Tidal.
But Prince's relationship with technology couldn't dampen the love and admiration many people had for the musician. He was known for bending gender and genre over the decades and even made his name unpronounceable for a time.
Fans have unsurprisingly taken to Twitter and other social platforms -- some of them surely doing their raspberry berets -- to grieve and quote the musician's most famous lyrics. "This is what it feels like when doves cry," many have written, quoting one of the musician's most iconic songs, "Purple Rain."
Prince was hospitalized last week with the flu, which sparked rumors about his health. Police were called to his Paisley Park studio Thursday and his publicist later confirmed the seven-time Grammy wier had passed away.
Bo Prince Rogers Nelson, Prince's music and style were nothing if not unique. Like the also recently departed David Bowie, Prince has now gone on to a better place. While Bowie's fans may forever imagine him rocketing off to the red planet or beyond, it's a safer bet that Prince is instead driving off into the hereafter in a Little Red Corvette.
