There have been plenty of whispers about Nintendo's next home console. We now have the first bit of solid information, with the company on Wednesday aouncing the system will be released in March of 2017.
"For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed 'NX' with a brand-new concept. NX will be launched in March 2017 globally," the company said as part of its 2016 fiscal year eaings report on Wednesday.
Nintendo's American Twitter account also aounced the news, releasing a tweet that reads, "The next generation of #Nintendo is coming March 2017! #NX."
The beloved Japanese company dominated the last generation of home consoles with its Wii, which shipped over 100 million units. It failed to recapture that success with the Wii U, however. Launched in 2012, Nintendo says the Wii U has logged 12.8 million in sales -- lagging behind Microsoft's Xbox One, which has sold around 18 million units, and far behind the market leading PlayStation 4's 35 million-plus users.
The eaings report also revealed that the company has further delayed the new Legend of Zelda game to 2017, after previously saying it would be released in 2016. The game will be available on both the Wii U and the NX, a situation similar to"The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess," originally designed for the GameCube, being delayed for the Wii's 2006 launch.
