Randall Blackford, general manager of Pizza Hut Africa, displays the pizza at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Pizza Hut
Pepperoni pizza with extra cheese? You bet. That'll be...four days.
The weirdest month in pizza history continued this week when, to celebrate opening a location in Tanzania, its 100th country, Pizza Hut managed to deliver a pizza to the top of 19,341-foot Mount Kilimanjaro. But forget your 30-minute guarantee, even if they still offered one. The trek began on May 5 and reached the top on May 8.
The delivery set a new Guinness World Record for the highest altitude pizza delivery on land. You need to specify the "on land" thing because Pizza Hut already delivered to space back in 2001.
The pizza was baked in Dar Es Salaam, then traveled via plane, car and the insulated, battery-powered backpacks of five guides.
Thanks to the backpacks, it arrived still warm, though quickly lost heat thanks to the chilly temps at the snow-covered summit. Eh, still, in the immortal words of Toto: We bless the grains down in Africa.
