George Zimmerman finds a new auction site to sell the gun that killed Trayvon Martin - CNET

He found another site, run by United Gun Group, to host the sale of a gun he describes in the listing as "an American Firearm Icon."

In a Twitter posting, United Gun Group says it's "a complete social network like Facebook." Indeed, the site told The Washington Post that it was created as a reaction to Facebook banning the sale of guns. The site was created in February and one of its first tweets read: "#Facebook doesn't want you? We do at http://UnitedGunGroup.com."

United Gun Group didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Naturally, the Zimmerman listing has attracted some notoriety to the site. As bids rose above the minimum $5,000 level, some weighed in to apparently mock the whole affair.

Two bidders offered in the vicinity of $65 million, one of them paired with the screen name "Racist McShootFace." Both submissions have been deleted. Other bids were made in the name of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old shot dead by police in Cleveland while holding a toy gun.

The highest bid at the moment stands at $485,000.

It might never have got past zero. The United Gun Group initially took down the listing, according to USA Today. However, it reinstated the listing Thursday night, together with a Twitter post that read: "FYI, United Gun Group is a free service, we are not being compensated for allowing members to utilize our system."

The site added that it doesn't post the items. Its members do.
