Thomas Maing, 64, of Halifax, Mass., became the first person in the U.S. to receive a penis transplant.
Massachusetts General HospitalA Boston hospital aounced Monday that it had performed the country's first penis transplant.
Massachusetts General Hospital surgeons spent 15 hours earlier this month giving Thomas Maing, 64, of Halifax, Mass., a new penis after he lost his own to cancer, the hospital said in a statement. The organ was from a deceased donor. Maing is now recovering, and surgeons say they are "cautiously optimistic" that he will regain urinary and potentially sexual function.
The world's first penis transplant took place in South Africa in 2014, CBS News reported.
