Taking a course in making movies from a famous, unconventional director is a rare opportunity. Now students can get advice from New German Cinema director Weer Herzog in an online filmmaking class at MasterClass.
Herzog -- best-known for making over 70 groundbreaking films and documentaries such as "Into the Abyss" and "Grizzly Man" -- has a reputation for making some rather unusual and noteworthy moments in cinematography.
His approach to filmmaking has eaed him not only 50 awards and 43 nominations, but also praise from trusted film critics. Film critic Roger Ebert once wrote that Herzog "has never created a single film that is compromised, shameful, made for pragmatic reasons, or uninteresting. Even his failures are spectacular."
For an enrollment fee of $90 (about £62, AU$124), Herzog's online course offers 20 video lessons (over five hours) on every aspect of filmmaking such as storytelling, cinematography, locations, self-financing and more. Students can upload videos to get feedback from the class, and Weer will also critique select student work.
"You spend way too much time in film school; it costs way too much money," Herzog said in his MasterClass course video trailer. "You can lea the essentials of filmmaking on your own in just two weeks."
This isn't the first time Herzog has shared his filmmaking expertise with students. In 2009, Herzog founded Rogue Film School. Herzog teaches a four-day seminar at his school every year. But this is his first online film class.
"I prefer people who have worked as bouncers in a sex club, or have been wardens in the lunatic asylum," Herzog told Interview magazine in 2009. "You must live life in its very elementary forms."
If anything, the class should prove to be not only informative but entertaining just to listen to Herzog talk for five hours about his filmmaking style.
MasterClass offers other classes with experts in their fields like bestselling author James Patterson on writing a book, "House of Cards" actor Kevin Spacey on acting and Christina Aguilera on singing, to name a few.
