WhatsApp is the world's most popular messaging app on Android, says report - CNET

If you're a Telegram or Viber user and wondering why there's no one else to message, well the answer could lie in the fact that these apps just aren't as popular on Android compared to WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Research from data analytics firm SimilarWeb shows that the Facebook-owned WhatsApp is currently the world leader as the most popular messaging app in 109 countries, while Facebook's own Messenger app is a distant second at 49 countries.

That said, these two apps still outshone other messaging apps such as Viber, Line, WeChat or Telegram, though Viber is the only one of the four to claim more than ten countries. Interestingly, apps like KakaoTalk are really only popular in South Korea while BBM is the dominant messaging app in Indonesia.

Impressively, BBM is installed on 87.5 percent of Android devices in the country, and this is far ahead of countries such as the US, with only 0.42 percent of Android users installing the BBM app. The UK and Australia are only slightly ahead.
