Stephen Shankland/CNETGawker founder Nick Denton had previously suspected that Nick Thiel, co-founder of Paypal and an early investor in Facebook, was backing Terry "Hulk Hogan" Bollea's defamation case against the online publication.
It tus out he was right, as on Thursday Thiel revealed to the New York Times that he aligned himself with the pro wrestling icon.
"I saw Gawker pioneer a unique and incredibly damaging way of getting attention by bullying people even when there was no coection with the public interest," he told the publication. "I thought it was worth fighting back."
Back in 2007, Gawker had outed Thiel, who is homosexual, before he was open about his sexuality, with an article titled "Peter Thiel is totally gay, people".
Thiel reportedly paid roughly $10 million to back Hogan, who won more than $115 million in a Florida jury trial in March after claiming Gawker violated his privacy in 2012 when it published a sex tape involving him and the now-estranged wife of a friend.
