When Daenerys Targaryen speaks in Dothraki on "Game of Thrones," you know something important is about to go down. But leaing to talk in a fictional language has its own set of challenges.
Actress Emilia Clarke revealed on "Late Night With Seth Meyers" on Wednesday that the language of the Dothraki -- the nomadic warriors on "Game of Thrones" -- is indeed a real, structured language and not just her making up words while in character as Targaryen.
"It's a full language, you can study it," Clarke said in the video.
The Dothraki language was created by linguist David J. Peterson for HBO's "Game of Thrones" TV show, based on the phrases used by author George R. R. Martin in the original books.
When Clarke gets her script to lea lines for an episode, she sees the dialog in English, then written in Dothraki. She also listens to MP3 audio so she can hear it spoken in Dothraki phonetically.
Now that she's more comfortable speaking Dothraki, Clarke told Meyers that sometimes she'll sing popular songs like Hanson's "Mmmbop" in the "Game of Thrones" language just for the fun of it.
For fans who want to lea the basics of Dothraki pronunciation, vocab, grammar and dialogue, they can download the Dothraki Companion app from Random House that teaches useful phrases such as, "Hash yer dothrae chek?" (How are you?) and "Anha zhilak yera" (I love you). Singing "Mmmbop" is up to you.
