Just two weeks after its May 24 release, Overwatch had reached 7 million players. One of them was Tesla's Elon Musk. I mean, sure, that's impressive, but it was still noticeably short of the 9.7 million that flocked to the free open beta before the game's release.
But now, Blizzard's new team-based online shooter has hit a new milestone. In less than a month, it's now sitting pretty at 10 million players, the company aounced in a statement. CNET's Seamus Bye had some thoughts on why the game has clicked with such a large playerbase.
World of Warcraft, Blizzard's incredibly popular MMORPG, sat at around 12 million monthly subscribers at its peak. Blizzard's free-to-play digital card game Hearthstone has around 40 million players. With Overwatch, which comes with a one-time purchase, passing the 10-million player mark, it really does look like Blizzard has unlocked the recipe for success no matter how it sells its games.
