Zuckerberg and Chan started their foundation following the December birth of their first child, daughter Max.
FacebookFresh off verifying that he's not a lizard person (phew), Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, alongside wife Priscilla Chan, is investing an undisclosed amount in Andela, a startup that seeks to train software developers in Africa.
The investment, reported by the WSJ, is the first made by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a $45 billion philanthropic company founded by the executive and his wife last December.
The publication reports that the Initiative is leading a $24 million funding round for the New York-based start up, in which GV, formerly known as Google Ventures, is also involved.
The start up presently trains prospective developers in Nigeria and Kenya. "We live in a world where talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not," Zuckerberg said in a statement. "Andela's mission is the close that gap."
Facebook and Andela were contacted for comment but did not immediately respond.
