Proving that there are still valuable gems to be unearthed on eBay, one lucky Nirvana fan is now the owner of an original recording of a session that included two previously-unheard tracks from the band.
The label on the reel actually lists seven songs recorded on February 15, 1993 at Pachyderm Studios, including two demo versions of "Dumb" and three of "Marigold," but the most compelling tracks are two instrumentals that would serve as proto-releases leading up to "In Utero," an album that the band would go on to record with Steve Albini later that month in the same studio.
"Lullaby" is the more dissonant of the two songs with unrehearsed drums, bass, and a cosmic keyboard effect that spill together into three and a half minutes of messy noodling.
It's still worth listening to, if only just to join in on the YouTube comment thread speculating about whether or not it's actually Kurt Cobain playing drums.
The other track is untitled but drummer Dave Grohl plays all the instruments, which blast out of the gate with a brutal guitar riff played over a high-pitched feedback loop. Hearing Grohl's guitar work here makes it easy to imagine him picking one up again to form Foo Fighters the following year.
