New York-based registered nurse and food artist Katherine Dey crafts the kind of shockingly realistic cakes that make you wonder if seeing really is believing.
In the past she's designed gruesome cakes such as a brain with its stem attached, an anatomically-correct heart, a human head, a sleeping baby and a lamprey.
Most recently, Dey created a chocolate cake filled with Boston cream that looks so much like a giant Madagascar hissing cockroach that we'd be nervous to cut a slice.
"I love that strange feeling I get when something looks real but it isn't," Dey told Buzzfeed in April. "Or when a cake doesn't look particularly appetizing but it is a cake and it tastes delicious. I like to make people feel two conflicting things at once. The subjects I choose are things that have interested me forever, be it anatomy, mushrooms, or portraiture."
Dey posted a step by step YouTube tutorial video on June 20, so anyone who wants to construct a Madagascar hissing cockroach cake from scratch can watch for tips.
While the inside part of the cockroach is definitely made of cake, the outer shell and antennae are created with fondant and food coloring.
