One of the most epic and anticipated battle scenes this side of Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy went down in the penultimate episode of season 6 of HBO mega-hit "Game of Thrones" earlier this month, and now the studio behind the highly satisfying "Battle of the Bastards" is sharing a peek behind the scenes at how it did it.

By now we're all pretty aware that many of the action-packed spectacles Hollywood creates for our screens are actually generated by sophisticated software, but it's still impressive to see just how few human actors were involved in the most heated part of the battle. During the moments when Jon Snow is most in the midst of the melee, the above breakdown of the digital elements in the scene reveal that actor Kit Harington is basically the only thing that's real in most shots.

"We are up close and personal in this battle with CG horses and collisions right in front of the lens and we constantly needed to review (Australian visual-effects studio) Iloura's shots side by side with the photography because it was hard to remember and even harder to see the difference between what was shot and what was added," Steve Kullback, visual-effects producer for season 6, said on the studio's website.
