Back in 2014, Google aounced that it was one of several companies investing in a $300 million underwater inteet cable linking the US west coast to Japan. Today, that cable will go live.
Nicknamed "Faster", the 9,000 kilometre (5,600 mile) cable will coect Oregon to the coastal Japanese cities of Chiba and Mie. The coection will run 60 terabits per second, which is about 10 million times faster than the standard cable modem.
Google partnered with Global Transit, China Telecom Global, Singtel, China Mobile Inteational, and KDDI to make the investment. Japan's NEC was appointed to actually build the cable. It promises to improve inteet speeds throughout Asia, as well as in West Coast cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle.
Google did not immediately respond to request for comment.
