Speaking to college students can resemble walking into a bar in an unfamiliar town in an unfamiliar country.
You think you know how they speak. So one method of communication is to attempt to mimic that.
This may not go well.
Such was the example set by an email sent to Patrick Burtchaell's roommate.
Burtchaell, a design student at Loyola University in New Orleans, helpfully posted the message on Twitter for all to see. It came, it seems, from a Microsoft university recruiter.
It began: "HEY BAE INTERN <3."
Ah. Oh, Is "bae" still cool veacular? I worry that it's over the hill. Or was this some clever allusion to the fact that the party would be in the Bae Area? I fear it was.
This was an invitation to a special after-party during Inteapalooza on July 11. I understand that some may refer to the main event as "Inteapabooza."
Indeed, this invitation offered: "There will be hella noms, lots of dranks [sic], the best beats and just like last year, we're breaking out the Yammer beer pong tables."
It ended, as all great emails should, with a flourish: "HELL YES TO GETTING LIT ON A MONDAY NIGHT."
A Microsoft spokeswoman offered me a comment that smacked of "hell, no": "The email was poorly worded and not in keeping with our values as a company. We are looking into how this occurred and will take appropriate steps to address it."
Microsoft has tried to youthify itself before. Who can erase from their minds the teen bot Tay, who was sadly hijacked and tued into a hoy racist?
It's hard to get with the kids. Sometimes it's best not to try.
