Design patents are given too much value when it comes to legal damages, Samsung has argued to the US Supreme Court in its patent dispute with Apple. In an opening brief filed Wednesday with the nation's highest court, Samsung presented its arguments for why an earlier ruling in Apple's favor should be thrown out. It said in the filing that "at a minimum, a new trial is necessary." Samsung contends that Apple should only get profits from the parts of a smartphone that infringe Apple's patents -- the front face and a grid of icons on a user interface -- not the profits from the entire phone. It said that "grossly overrewarding design patents" will hurt competition and iovation and will lead to...

ادامه مطلبApple's rival to the Echo could know who you are just by looking at you. The consumer electronics giant has explored putting a camera in its device, which could come in the form of a smart speaker like Amazon's Echo, according to people familiar with Apple's plans. The device would be "self aware" and detect who is in the room using facial recognition technology. That would let the device automatically pull up a person's preferences, such as the music and lighting they like, the sources said. The hardware could be released by year's end, but it's more likely to be available in 2017. They cautioned, though, that Apple could change its plans to include a camera -- or even scrap the device enti...

ادامه مطلبApple retail stores may not pop up in India after all. James Martin/CNET Apple might have trouble opening the doors to retail stores in India due to local sourcing rules. The company has been attempting to launch its first retail outlets in India, a country where Apple products are currently sold only online or through third-party retailers. One obstacle is that foreign companies selling products in India must purchase 30 percent of their components from local businesses if they wish to open up retail stores. Apple, which sources most of its products from China, had seemed close to wiing an exception to that policy. But that's reportedly no longer the case.India's finance minister, Arun Jait...

ادامه مطلبApple may expect demand for the iPhone 7 to top that for the iPhone 6 shown here. Sarah Tew / CNET Apple may be counting on healthy sales for this year's iPhone despite the gloom and doom predicted by many analysts. The company has reportedly asked its suppliers to manufacture 72 to 78 million new iPhones by year's end, Barron's Asia reported Monday, quoting from Taiwan's Economic Daily Times. If true, that would be a big bump from the 65 million anticipated by Wall Street analysts and the highest level of iPhone production over the past two years. Right away, I knew that this thing was different. It was better. Before long, I decided it was worth it. In 2008, I bought a...
