  • Vinyl record buyers are old and lonely, says new study - CNET

  • Happy National Vinyl Record Day!You might assume millennials are the ones lining up on Record Store Day to drop coin on the latest special edition, 180-gram, splatter-paint record of the month, but you'd be wrong -- at least in the United Kingdom.According to a new study by market research company YouGov, UK music fans between the ages of 45 and 54 are actually more likely to hit record stores in search of vinyl. By contrast, the study found 18- to 24-year-olds are least likely to purchase vinyl, suggesting last year's sales explosion could be attributed to vinyl nostalgia rather than discovery. The study also unearthed two very bleak statistics that are depressing enough to make any collector reconsider this hobby: 56 percent of vinyl buyers tend to keep their feelings to themselves and 69 percent would rather listen to music alone than with a partner. It's worth noting YouGov's findings are based on a sample of UK adults only. • Apple Store app now touts products based on your buying history - CNET

  • screenshot by Lance Whitney/CNET Apple now has a new tactic to try to get you to open your wallet. Updated on Thursday, the Apple Store app will now recommend and help you shop for products that work with the Apple devices you already own. So if you purchase an iPad, the app may propose buying a Smart Cover to accompany it. Or if you pick up an iPhone, Apple may suggest a dock to sync and charge the device. For me, the app pointed to a case for my iPhone 6. You see your recommended products as you scroll down the app's Discover screen. The new feature was leaked in late July by Bloomberg. A feature that analyzes your purchase history may strike some people as an intrusion into their private buying habits. Apple has typically depicted itself as a defender of user privacy. But the company is still a retailer, facing competition from the likes of Google and Amazon, both of which tap into data collection to try to decipher the wants and needs of their users. Apple does specify that only the name, model number and part number of your devices are linked to the Apple ID accessed by the app. You can also tu off the feature if you don't want Apple to track your purchases. The latest 4.0 version of the Apple Store app adds other features as well. You can now better manage your Apple account with an Account screen designed to be more user-friendly. Featured workshops and other events at your local Apple retail store will pop up more readily. You'll also be able to see when an order will be ready for pickup and what time an Apple Store reservation will start. Further, you can now scan a product at certain Apple Stores to lea more about it, make sure it's compatible with your existing hardware or software and then buy it through your iPhone. Finally, you can see if a product you've tagged as a Favorite is available when you visit a participating Apple Store. Apple did not immediately , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Samsung might buy up Fiat Chrysler's auto-parts company - Roadshow

  • RoadshowNewsCar IndustrySamsung might buy up Fiat Chrysler's auto-parts companyYou'll probably recognize this label if you've been through an auto-parts store any time in the last, oh, forever or so. Magnetti Marelli Tech companies are eager to get themselves more involved with the auto industry, whether it's by creating its own automotive projects or by buying up other companies. Samsung appears to be making a move in the latter category, as it's in talks to buy up Magnetti Marelli, an auto-parts manufacturer under Fiat Chrysler.Samsung is in "advanced talks" to buy either some or all of Magnetti Marelli's business, Bloomberg reports. According to the outlet's sources, Samsung seems most interested in the telematics, infotainment and lighting side of the business. All in, the deal could eclipse $3 billion, Samsung's largest acquirement outside of its home base in South Korea.Neither company immediately retued requests for comment.Making more money is something Fiat's been trying hard to achieve for a while. It's stopping production of its compact sedans, the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200, because development costs are too high and no other automaker was willing to split the bill. Fiat Chrysler's placed its whole focus on high-margin trucks and SUVs, many of which lie within its Jeep brand. Despite a push for efficient vehicles, low gas prices have kept most buyers interested in thirstier vehicles, which may or may not be myopic on an impressive scale. But it's not like Samsung isn't making its own waves in the auto industry already. Bloomberg points that that Samsung's had a team focused on auto components, electronics and autonomy since December, and the company's Shanghai division bought a stake in Chinese auto manufacturer BYD for the not-that-princely sum of about $451 million. In fact, Samsung and Magnetti Marelli have teamed up for products in the past, so this pairing isn't that, ...ادامه مطلب

Equipped with what Porsche claims is the maximum amount of street-legal motorsport technology, the GT3 RS has a zero-to-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds and can lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes, 20 seconds. • Walmart reportedly in talks to buy online retailer Jet.com - CNET

  • At a Jet warehouse in New Jersey. Ben Fox Rubin/CNET Jet.com launched to plenty of fanfare and with a giant war chest just over a year ago. Now, there's already chatter that the online retailer is ready to sell itself. The company, a rare new competitor for Amazon, is in talks to be bought up by Walmart, according to a report Wednesday from The Wall Street Joual. Jet could could be worth as much as $3 billion, the report said.Walmart declined to comment. Representatives for Jet didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. For Walmart, the deal could help in bolstering its e-commerce business, which is still tiny compared with its revenue from brick-and-mortar stores. The big-box retailer has been trying to be much more aggressive in challenging Amazon, the leading e-commerce company worldwide, by growing inventory on its website, introducing an Amazon Prime-like shipping service and expanding its grocery pickup service. An acquisition for Jet, though, would prove a disappointment after CEO Marc Lore raised more than $700 million to start the business and predicted big growth for the e-retailer, despite years of losses starting off. Jet has worked to undercut Amazon's prices by allowing customers to lower their costs by adding more items to orders and waiving free retus. The last time Lore went up against Amazon, the top-dog online retailer started a price war with Quidsi, Lore's previous startup and the parent of Diapers.com. Amazon eventually bought his business.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Kanye West rants on Twitter to get Apple to buy Tidal - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageThis is Kanye trying to make things happen. Twitter screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET Kanye West had clearly had enough. And when Kanye has had enough, he either mounts the stage at an awards show or he does what so many do -- mounts his high horse on Twitter. On Saturday moing, the great entertainer emitted a series of tweets encouraging Apple to buy Tidal. There have been rumors for a little while now that Apple -- with its strong music connections -- would buy Jay Z's not entirely flourishing streaming enterprise.West, as well as other stars such as Rihanna, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys and Jack White were introduced at Tidal's launch as apparent equity partners. So Kanye just wishes Apple would hurry up.In the first of a series of tweets, he mused, "This Tidal Apple beef is fucking up the music game."I hadn't been aware that there was so much of a beef. However, Kanye Kan-tinued: "I need Tim Cook Jay Z Dez Jimmy Larry me and Drake Scooter on the phone or in a room this week!!!"These would be the main players from either side of this alleged T-bone, and when Kanye has a need, that need must be met. With a meeting, for example. You might be wondering what is truly going on. Thankfully, Kanye enlightened further: "Fuck all this dick swinging contest. We all gon [sic] be dead in 100 Years. Let the kids have the music."I fear the kids have quite enough music already. They barely know what to do with it all. Is this all really about the kids having the music? Or is it about Jay Z and his superstar partners finally cashing in on their troubled venture? But then Kanye went in for the kill. Yes, he went for Tim Cook's ego."Apple give Jay his check for Tidal now and stop tying to act like you Steve," he tweeted. It would, of course, be quite wrong for Apple to act as if it was Steve Jobs. Most pe, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Did you buy a GTX 970? Nvidia owes you $30 if you live in the US - CNET

  • Anyone in the United States who purchased a GTX 970 may be eligible for a $30 payout from Nvidia, thanks to a proposed settlement in a class-action lawsuit.Last year, a series of lawsuits were filed against Nvidia and Nvidia card manufacturers over what amounts to false advertising. (The lawsuits were then consolidated into one in March 2015). The main issue raised in the lawsuit was that the GTX 970, advertised as having 4 GB of VRAM, in fact does not--at least not exactly.Within a few months of the the 970's launch in September 2014, owners discovered that games that used more than 3.5 GB of memory ran into performance issues that weren't happening on the GTX 980. The following January, Nvidia revealed that the configuration for streaming multiprocessors on the two cards are different. Nvidia As a result, the 970's memory was split into 3.5 GB and 0.5 GB sections. It claimed this didn't result in a meaningful impact on performance, but as PC Gamer reported at the time, numerous users reported issues when playing games that used more than 3.5 GB of VRAM. It was also discovered by PC Perspective that the 970 had a smaller L2 cache and fewer render output processors than Nvidia had originally claimed. These three shortcomings comprised the lawsuit's allegations that the 970 was sold "based on misleading representations" and "do not operate as represented."Rather than risk this going any further, the two sides have reached a proposed settlement, paperwork for which was filed in a US District Court in Califoia this week. As part of this, Nvidia won't admit any liability, which is standard in a situation like this. It will, however, pay out $30 for each 970 purchased in the US to anyone who submits a valid claim. Before this can happen, the court will need to approve the settlement during a hearing on August 24.If approved, eligible owners will be notified of the settlement by October 23,, ...ادامه مطلب
